By the time I finished my round of exercise at 10 this morning, I hit over 16,000 steps. The day is still young, so I curious to see what my 24 hour steps will be today.

Progress may be slow, but it happens!

I have a desk job, so it is hard. Make everything count. March in place while brushing your teeth or washing your hands. Do calf raises or pace while on a phone call.

Depending on the type of career you have depends on how many steps you can do in a day! I have a sedentary job, I get in more steps running errands and doing active exercise. Plus I have a treadmill which helps me out. About 90 minutes of walking in a day gets me round 14,000 steps but many days I get in close to 18-20K if I'm paying attention close enough~

"Your happiness is up to you. Whatever happened in your life to make you who you are up until this point is irrelevant. It is your responsibility now to take control and change your life to be what you want it to be. Energy and persistence conquer all things. Make time, not excuses."

I also have a sedentary job. I will average 2500 steps in an 8 hour shift so I have to make a conscious effort to get active to get my 10000 steps, but I do it almost everyday. I walk everywhere. Instead of emailing a co-worker, I get up and walk to their desk to talk to them. I have to run errands for work (like go to the bank and office supply store) and I walk instead of drive to do those things- rain or shine, and I live in Washington state, so it rains A LOT here. I will also walk around the conference room table while my lunch is in the microwave. I bought a mini stair stepper and make an effort to stair step 2 minutes for every hour that I am away from my house (10 hours total including my commute time). By the end of my work day, I will be around 6000-7000 steps. Once I get home I workout which will add 2000-3000 and then normal household chores usually get me there, but if they don't. I have been known to march in place next to my bed until I get there. It was hard at first, I had to really want to hit it, but it is definitely doable. It's a fun little goal to reach each day.

If it doesn't challenge you, it doesn't change you!

Never trade what you want the MOST for what you want at the MOMENT!

I'm not trying to look perfect... I just want to feel better, look great, know I'm healthy and be able to ROCK any outfit I choose.

I have a sedentary job so it takes a lot of steps to get the 10000 in. Mostly I do just under 5000 and that is with some extra walking. It's clear I need to push for a lot more.

I've only skimmed through the other great posts and am just answering the question. This will depend on your job/lifestyle, but in my case not without some effort. It is doable but I have to intend to do it to reach or exceed 10k steps most days. I've worn a fitbit for about three years, if I don't care about steps it can vary between 1,000 - 8,000 steps, I think I read that 4,000 is "average" for a person with a sedentary job. A lot of my exercise doesn't add significant steps (swimming, yoga, weights), but some does (dancing, jumping rope, walking, jogging). On days when my workout doesn't add steps, reaching 10k steps means I make an effort to sneak in extra movement several times a day. I may walk at lunch time, hula hoop or march in place on television commercials, do side steps while brushing my teeth, park in the farthest parking lot or even better walk whenever it is safe and possible, take the stairs every excuse, etc. Some people easily exceed that just doing their jobs--i.e. stay at home parents of active children, mail carriers, nurses, etc. I've seen tables translating time spent during non-step activity into steps, I don't really use them as my goal is usually to exceed 10k steps so I figure if I get 10k on a day when my workout didn't earn steps all the better. But I do find it helpful to think more in terms of time spent active vs completely sedentary (though you need some of that--especially sleep). I am not sure I buy into there being anything magical about 10k steps specifically, but I do think it is a helpful guideline and reflects a decent amount of daily activity.

RICHERYL, I have the info for you. Swimming moderate, 174 steps per minute. Swimming, vigorous, 222 steps per minute. Swimming leisurely, 133 steps per minute. These are metabolic equivalents. Go to http://www.takesteps.univerahealthcare.com/stepChartPop.jsp. You can search on line, too. Look for Activity Conversion Chart or something like Walking Pedometer Steps Equivalents.

Allergy season is starting here in the metro-Atlanta area with pollen counts rediculously high counts so that I can't be outside and have to keep windows and doors shut tight. At least I can swim laps in a beautiful indoor lap pool nearby. Too bad I can't figure out how to equate my laps into steps, oh well.

I hit my 10,000 steps by 9:30 this morning. I didn't hit 10,000 last week, because I was ill. The last thing I was thinking about was exercising last week.

It's really hard if you don't get outside, I think. If I walk to the mailbox and back, I get almost 1/3 of them in; then if I do any step aerobics, it tops it right off. If it's warm outside and I get out with my horses, it's a piece of cake! Otherwise I have a really hard time getting them in.

If I'm at home and it's my daughter or my aunt, I walk back and forth while talking on the phone. I guess I have long conversations with them, because I can sure get pretty many steps in. Usually, I'll take a 3 or 4-mile walk once a day.

I have an app on my phone that tracks my movement. I have tried using a pedometer and I just never consistently take it with me like my phone. But that is just me. I walk to work, try an walk for at least 20 minutes at lunch, and walk home. I am lucky that I live close enough to work that I can do that. I have a very non-active job, so I need to do something. The tracking helps me a lot.

if i really wanna achieve this it takes me clearly two hours a day or walking 5 miles...i also where a fitbit or with any pedometer i have worn all day you can clearly see what steps you are taking. If i do a different workout the pedometer does measure steps just not heart rate so it does not measure an accurate calories burned just counts the steps which can add up to your step goal for the day

You just need to start walking more. Your clearing sitting too much. Start taking the stairs, park further away. You should easily get in a few thousand steps by simply making small changes during your day. If you work in an office, take a few moments each day to walk around the office.

If you do this, combined with about 30 minutes of physical activity a day (whether it's walking, running, etc) you should get in more than enough steps!

A 20 minute walk is about 2000 steps. This means a 30 minute walk is 3000 calories! This can easily be done, even if your simply walking in place in front of the television. 30 minutes is equivilant to one tv show. If you can walk in front of the television for one tv show a day you would have gotten in almost half your daily steps.

It's fine to break it up. If it's hard to get to 10,000 break it up into smaller chunks. And don't let the people who say "Oh I get 20,000 steps a day!" get you down. Start where you are and build up.

I find it difficult to get 10,000 steps unless at least part of the day I am walking specifically to walk. In other words, I might clean house and run errands all day and feel tired by 4pm, but I look at my Fitbit and it says only about 7000 steps! Regular life rarely gets me to 10,000 steps. (I have a 40 hour a week desk job) So I usually walk 30 minutes (fast) on the treadmill in the morning, take a 15 minute walk around 10:30 am, then a 15 minute walk around 2:30 pm. I may do another 15 minutes on the treadmill after dinner.

I often walk quite a bit (sometimes all) of my commute - almost 10 miles round trip. Weekends are harder for me, but last night and on some other occasions I've completed my 10k steps by walking in place while watching some tv shows. Just pottering about doing a bit of housework adds the steps quite quickly too - so basically, just try and keep off your backside as often as possible emoticon
(I keep track and motivated with my fitbit flex - still in the honeymoon period with it)

Well the only answer I can tell you is to keep walking...My brother and I bought the SPAT and I started very slow but I have more than doubled my steps so it can be done. My brother averages around 10,000 to 12,000 a day. I am doing around 3500 to 4000 and I could hardly walk at all sometimes when I first started because I am very overweight. I feel a lot better and I have doubled, yes doubled from starting the treadmill only 2 weeks ago. I feel really great! Good Luck to all. Also the meter is more accurate when worn on your shoe versus wearing it on your bra or belt. It will make a big difference.

If I don't get a walk in, I won't get 10,000 steps. Even if I am active at home, cleaning, running up and down doing laundry, shopping, errands...maybe I'll possibly get 5,000 in, but that's a high estimate. Small space = few steps. Someone told me she always gets 10,000 steps when she cleans her house. I said your house must be a lot larger than mine.

Do any of you get 10,000 steps by cleaning?

If it's a day where all I do is run an errand or two, and do some normal housework, I'll only track around 2500 steps for the day. If I want to hit the 10000 mark, I need to go running. It's the only way for me, being that I am a housewife, and I don't have a job that requires me to walk around all day.

Without exercise I get 2-3,000 steps at work. I get on my wii fit on the free step section and step while watching tv 10-30 minutes depending on the time I have. I get an extra 1,000 steps per ten minutes sometimes more! However, I hardly make it to 10,000. My personnel goal for now is 6,000

I walk in place while I'm ironing, brushing my teeth, on hold on the phone, watching television, and especially out shopping and running errands. I even walk in place while waiting at the doctor's office. Sometimes I get 11,000 or 12,000 steps! (And I'm 60 years old!)

The only "diet" that works is consistency!

When I worked, I was easily able to get 14,000-18,000 steps a day and 20,000 wasn't that difficult. But I also started out my day with a 30 to 60 walk with my dog.

Now that I am retired, I have found that if I don't do my walk in the morning, I really have to make an effort to get in my 10,000 steps.

Whether I think I can or I think I can't, I am right.

I'll bet that if you put on a cheap pedometer, you'd be surprised at how many steps you actually walk in a day.

I have a desk job and am constantly getting up and walking the floor. I park farther away from the door at the mall or grocery store (as far as I feel comfortable especially in the dark). I walk the steps to my desk. I walk several times a week for lunch and do 5K walks whenever I can.

I did some research because it seemed to me there ought to be a way of getting some credit for other types of exercise, like snow shoveling or weight training, that hardly have any steps at all although they are very good exercises. I found an Activity Conversion Chart that lists all kinds of activities and their estimated metabolic equivalents. It says, "Use this info if you're counting steps and want to convert activities that are not easily measured by the pedometer." Go to www.takesteps.univerahealthcare.com/stepChartPop.jsp. That does say "univera." It is not a typo. Be sure to put enough paper in your printer because I've got 7 pages for their list.

dont't know it it works out the be enough steps but I will go up and down the stairs between loads of laundry instead of staying on the same level as the washer and dryer. Depending on how many loads I'm doing, times 2 for washer and then dryer, it totals up to be quite a few trips up and down. whewwww, makes me tired just thinking about laundry day, LOL

I love all of the advice in this thread! I am going to try to get up and walk once an hour for 10 minutes and try to get my 10,000 steps in!

One thing that I did when the weather was good was walk around my back yard while my daughter was playing. I could easily walk 3-5 miles listening to music while she had fun playing!

Everyone had great ideas to get in 10,000 steps a day. I do 3 30 minute treadmill sessions, walk outside, walk inside, stay active and its not hard because the trusty FitBit tells me where I am at when I check it~

"If a person wants to be a part of your life, they will make an obvious effort to do so. Think twice before reserving a space in your heart for people who do not make an effort to stay."

"Your happiness is up to you. Whatever happened in your life to make you who you are up until this point is irrelevant. It is your responsibility now to take control and change your life to be what you want it to be. Energy and persistence conquer all things. Make time, not excuses."

Representative Donald L. Moffitt (R) 74th District, Illinois, has recently lost so much weight that I didn't recognize at first him as he greeted me as he was ordering coffee in my daughter's coffee shop. When I complemented him, he replied that he kept his calorie intake at 2000 or less and tried to get in 10000 steps a day. I asked him how he got all those steps in, and he said he just parks far away from meetings, and walks rather than drives when he can.

Are there meetup groups in your area? Check out info@meetup.org on your computer. I found four different walking groups and have also made new friends. When you're walking and talking, it does not even seem like exercise. Another walking group comes from Germany, called Volksmarching (people walking). Our troops brought the idea to the U.S. from Germany. There are Volksmarches in every state, in Canada, and in Europe. Go to www.ava.org to find out information on Volksmarching. You can also take trips with them. Check out Tater Tours on line.

I commute to work which entails riding 2 different trains (light rail and commuter) in each direction. While I'm waiting at the station, I walk up and down the platform. Get in a lot of extra steps that way. (Work is about a 10 minute walk from the station which also adds more steps.)

I run around at work all day doing stock at an assembly plant and then I come home at 3pm and spend the rest of the day taking care of the house and my kids. I average around 10 000-15 000 steps/day.

I exercise at the gym, but also do 'functional' walking. Everytime I go to a play, dinner, etc., my husband and I try to walk the 1.5 miles downtown and back. During the winter, it gets a little unappealing, but once you start, it feels wonderful.

Take advantage of every opportunity...walk your supermarket when you go in. I walk the entire store, even aisles I don't buy anything from. It doesn't take a lot of additional time to do.

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.

Mistakes are the portals of discovery.

Don't be afraid to give your best at what seemingly are small jobs. Every time you conquer one it makes you that much stronger. If you do the little jobs well, the big ones will tend to take care of themselves.

It is never too late to be what you might have been.

I do laps in my house with my Sparkpeople Activity Tracker in my house back and forth for 10 minutes at a time and so far average anywhere from 6,000 to 7,000 steps. I notice sometimes in 10 minutes I can get a good 1,000 steps in if I go at a good speed. I think today though I will bump myself to 15 minutes a try and see if I go up from 6,000. You could try that.

walk to my co workers desks ( ok I live in an old building with no elevator)
leave the car at home if you are going to a place less than 15 min away from you.
go for a lunch 30 min walk ( just this usually gives me over 4000 steps) and for an after work walk

It used to be easy for me to get 12,000 steps per day when I was working. About once a week, I could get 20,000. I am now retired and find that I have to make a conscious effort to do a 30-minute walk 3x a day. I also take the long way everywhere! It doesn't bother me to not get a close parking place because I will get "credit" for the steps.

Whether I think I can or I think I can't, I am right.

I haven't done it lately but it is possible. When I've been on my feet all day it's easier but now that I spend most of the day sitting at my desk it is harder.

I try and move around as much as I can during the day.
Ex. Walk the block before work (or around the building), long route to bathroom, walk to kitchen for snacks taking the long way, take a 25-30 minute walk at lunch, and walk after dinner for the additional steps.

about 90 minutes total of walking and I get at least 11,000+ steps in a day.

My mom and I compete with etch other to see who can get the most for the day. We are competitive so it eliminates a lot of sitting time at my desk while I am at work because I want to win.

I reset my goal to 12000 and find that I average 16 to 18000 a day with a PB of 34000 once. I have never got closer that 28000 since. emoticon

On the days I start my day with a 5 mile walk dvd I can easliy get up to more than 20000 steps for the day. I also walk for 30 minutes over lunch and a combined 40 minutes to and from work and try to get up from my desk as much as I can.
