Yes, that's the bottom line. Watch your intake and don't let it exceed your output.

Congratulations! Keep up the good work. I'll be building my time up slowly. Maybe I'll get to a mile this year.

1 mile swims are awesome. Swimming 1 mile is equivalent in calorie burn to running 4 miles. My cardio goal is to swim 1 mile, 3 times a week. I just got my distance up to a half mile this week. Even at 1/2 mile, I have a bit of an endorphin rush. I feel like a different person when I get out of the water.

The 0-1650 is a great swim program. It is similar to the 025k but for swimming. The goal is to swim 1 mile which is 1650 yards. If you google zero to 1650 the program will come up. There is also a page on FB for the program.

My pool is 4 feet deep and I stand chest high. I can't do lunges because of previous ear surgeries make going under water painful. I am able to walk against the current. I still have to try the noodle idea from Misty., can't wait.

Check at your local Y or indoor pool. See if they have a US Master Swimmers program. That does not mean you have to be an expert swimmer to join. Usually, it's just older swimmers. The group I belonged to when I was in my 20's had everything from people who had been on their college swim team to someone like me - who had only been swimming a couple of years. I had great instruction in stroke mechanics, learned how to do flip turns ( which works your abs a little and are great fun), and learned some swim workout techniques. I found them to be eager to work with anyone who was eager to learn.

I love the noodle idea and can't wait to try it! My arms need as much help as the rest of me. I didn't think about it helping my core too. I have kick board and use that, but it only helps my legs. Totally forgot about my core getting a workout. I know I'm not in the pool long enough yet since I don't feel sore or worn out. Lots more to do....

CDUB, I agree with M@L says But I will add that swimming in good form will strengthen your core muscles and all of your other muscles. In my opinion swimming provides a total body cardiovascular workout unlike any other cardio that I have done. They have swim lessons for people who know how to swim but need help with their form and what to use swimming to get physically fit. Some will even come to your house. Most of the ones in my area do it one on one.

I have tried those water weights for swimming pools. They work fine but my arms ache so much afterwards so much I need to take a pain pill. May try using them only twice a week.

CDUB, Burning fat is an all-body process. Energy is delivered to the muscles via the bloodstream, NOT from being absorbed from surrounding fat stores. Working or not working the core muscles will make no difference to belly fat either way. What you can do is to continue to reduce your overall body fat through a combination of cardio, all-body strength training, and watching your intake, and some of it will naturally come off the belly. And swimming is just as effective as any other form of cardio in reducing belly fat. M@L

I have access to an exercise pool, the kind you swim against a current. I don't have a pool wall to swim to, just have to stop when I get tired. I've been trying to change up my strokes too. I tire really fast, but I love swimming so I know this will be an exercise I'll continue. Thanks for the advice and tips. Mostly I just need to keep exercising and not quit.

A pound of fat represents around 3500 calories, so 3 lbs represents about 10500 calories. As a VERY rough guide, a 150 lb person could expect to burn about 500 calories per hour swimming one Olympic length pool every minute (60 lengths an hour). So you would need to swim 180 lengths in 3 hours, 7 days per week to burn 3 lbs per week. This is almost certainly unrealistic for most people, both in terms of working out for that long, and just in finding the time to do that. A healthy and sustainable rate of weight loss is generally reckoned at 1-2 lbs per week. If you regularly open too large of calorie deficit, the body can try to close the gap by slowing your metabolism, sacrificing muscle to preserve fat, etc. Also, it is generally a lot easier to create a calorie deficit through cutting your intake AND exercise, than it is to create a deficit through one of these alone. Cutting your intake by 500 calories and swimming 1 hour per day is probably a lot easier than swimming 2 hours, even if both represent 1000 calories/day (equivalent to 2 lbs per week). M@L

Swimming can burn lots of calories depending on your size, type of strokes you do and duration. I like the breast stroke for my arms and I kick with my legs...(not the frog kicks assoc. with breast stroke) for most of my swimming. I do it in a full size Olympic pool (where I belong) so there weren't many breaks once I set out on a lap. It takes a while to build up you stamina for breathing...believe it or not that is what I found to be the hardest thing about swimming. Gasping for air, tires you out pretty quickly :) Depending where you do your swimming it might take you a while to be able to do continuous laps. Don't let that get you down....People who have been swimming laps for years make it look so effortless...it isn't when you start out. Set small goals...one lap at a time and rest between them catching your breath...nothing like being out in the middle of a lap in the deep end and not being able to breath. If you swimming in a pool at home, that isn't large enough to support laps or continuous swimming, you will burn considerably less. But it is still a great exercise!!! Dragonchild is right about the how weight loss works diet and exercise...Exercise is just one part to weight loss and you should be setting goals of 1-2 lbs a week for best success.

Weight loss doesn't work that way. :) There's no set number of minutes you must work out. In order to lose one pound of fat, you need to burn approximately 500 calories per day... roughly 3500 calories a week. That's your deficit. The deficit will come, ideally, through a combination of diet and exercise... real weight loss happens in the kitchen. You can swim all day if you like, but if you continue to overeat, you won't lose weight! You eat to meet your exercise needs, not exercise to meet your weight loss needs. How much you need to set your goal for depends on how much you have to lose. You can reasonably expect to lose about 3% or so of your total weight loss goal per week; this means if you weigh 300 pounds, 3 lbs per week is doable and reasonable. If you're 200, it's not likely to happen. The closer you get, the slower it will be. When you get to within 10 pounds of your goal weight, you start having to adjust to .5 or even .25 pounds per week. Swimming calories burned depends on the intensity of your exercise. A light little swim with lots of breaks is not comparable to an intense, steady session of swimming laps. You can play in the pool for two hours, and not burn half as much as you would in 30 minutes of truly intense, challenging speed swimming. You can use the swimming option in the fitness tracker for a rough estimate.

How many minutes do I need to swim to loose 2 to 3 pounds a week? How do i figure out how many calories I've burned?
