Whether a SWAG or not, ( I seriously hate dumb labels) it will work for me for 'general' tracking ease and a ballpark calorie burn. I do NOT expect it to be genious and 100% accurate, however, it will work for me on a daily basis. Did NOT expect a comment such as yours. Other strength trainings calories are given so why not for TG? Even housecleaning calories can be tracked! And I call heavy vacuuming serious arm work, if you switch arms. Wax on, wax off Daniel-san. Stronger...

Any attempt to calculate calories used doing a strength workout will unfortunately be flawed and at best a SWAG, scientific wild ass guess. An accurate calculation can not be done since it does not take into consideration the EPOC, exercise post oxygen consumption..

It is called WORK-ing out for a reason.

I said getting fit was simple, I did not say it was easy.

Cardio burns calories, strength work burns fat.

Eat well to lose weight, exercise to get fit

I use a total gym. I get irritated when entering single exercises. Instead, I am working on a upper body, cardio & abs, and lower body workouts. Naming them just that. ONCE, I will take each exercise done in each of the three workouts, and calculate the calories for each of the exercises done in each workout, and then total them, and then add the workout manually under ONE NAME. In general, I do my workouts on my Total Gym the same way one would do in the gym. Upper body one day, etc.
I simply cannot justify the time it takes to enter each exercise individually on a daily basis. It's just too much. So, although to calculate the above, it will be somewhat time consuming, but only once. Thereafter, it will be easy. Much easier.

If you are manually entering the Total Gym as your own entry (vs. finding it through a search in the fitness tracker), you'd need to add the calories burned yourself. If you find something in a search, then the calories burned are already included.

Hope that helps,

How do I add just the minutes when I am using the Total Gym? The calculator wants reps, weights, as well as time. When I hit enter it doesn't give me any calories burned. emoticon

If you go to your Fitness Tracker and search for the exercises, you can add them to your tracker. Or the easier way (that I'd recommend) is to log the minutes (and the tracker will give you some credit for calories burned.)

Hope that helps,

My apologies, thank you for the clarification, I misread your original post. Calories for strength training can not be accurately tracked due to the infinite numbers of variables which can not be controlled or calculated accurately.

I do it every other day. When I wrote I do it twice a day, I meant to say I get up and do my routine. I rest about 10 minutes, drink some water, and then do another set of the routine I do.

I have had the Total Gym for 10 years. I know it is strength training and I don't do it every day or do it early then late, the 2 sets of reps are done in a timely time frame.
i just was curious how to calculate it into calories.

On non strength training days I do my Elliptical .
Every day I ride my bike.

You may be impeding your progress by doing too many bouts of strength training. Strength training normally is done on an every other day schedule to allow rest and recovery of the exercised muscles to gain the training effect. Everyday is too much and twice a day is way too much to gain the desired benefit.

The Total Gym like the Total Trainer is a form of assisted bodyweight strength training derived from the Pilates Reformer and is an excellent form of home based strength training. Just do not over do it, more is not better more is just more. If you want to add to your training and fitness programme add some form of interval cardio on non strength training days.

OK, I do that. Just count the reps . I am at level 4, I just moved up to level 4 last week.
I will be there a long time, it is hard.

Hi,

The total gym is strength training and that is logged as exercises and reps. The power of strength training is that it increases your lean muscle mass so your metabolism is revved up all day and as you lose weight you lose less muscle.

We calculate calories with cardio rather than strength training.

Andrea

Every day find a little time for yourself, even if it is only 15 minutes, as long as that time is just for you. Better yet is if that time is fun.
