Just wanted to add that I got my HRM second hand off a website similar to ebay. It had never been used, still in its box, unwanted gift. I saved a tonne.

Hear Rate monitors are god for the purpose you describe. I favor POLAR products. A basic HRM starts at about $75

In general you would be better off with a HRM in determining relatively accurately the calories burned, and a middle range Polar (about $100) should get the job done well. I had another brand and was not really happy with it until I bought myself a Garmin 310xt, an old version Garmin that is now much more affordable. The new version costs as much as an Ipad. This Garmin that I have is suitable for outdoor triathlon type workouts, it is a great device, but if you are doing mostly indoor workouts, it would be an overkill. I have a few friends totally happy with mid-range Polars.

Reading through some of the posts, it seems like a good idea for me to get a hr monitor. I ride a recumbent bike a lot and when I do the presets, it is difficult to figure out an average mph. This would give me a better calorie burned number than I think I am currently getting..

Are all of them alike? Are there better brands? Or is it something like a pedometer....pretty much all alike unless I buy a very pricey one?
