It's been while, but this is SO true! I marked it as a favorite and today I toodled down to the bottom of my page and saw it. This was, and still is, such an attitude change for me. When I discovered that working in my yard, cutting down bushes was great exercise and yielded the added bonus of loosing weight and inches, it was like a revelation - exercise can be fun. Last year I accomplished my goal of cutting down ALL the grossly overgrown foundation bushes on two sides of my house. I'm short and it took a lot of effort, with just a hand saw, big clippers and a shovel, but I did it - what a sense of accomplishment! This year I've been working to get the roots out and new, nice foundation plants in. I've finished the front and half of the side. Right now I'm doing battle with a mighty big root - I hope it's the last. I joined a gym and, for the first time, I've stuck with it. Walking in the neighborhood has been a constant through this. I'm not at my goal weight, but I'm getting there; I've even got my husband walking with me. This really is true and I never really knew it until Spark

KNEWMETODAY

Finally had a chance to read all 600 (!) posts in this thread, and saw the ones about troubled family relationships, particularly those relating to teens. As a mother, foster mother, middle/high school teacher, and youth group leader for 35 years, I have (finally!) learned a few techniques of working with troubled youth that have changed my life both at home and in the classroom.

You may want to check out, "Love and Logic." Nothing in my experience has helped me as much as that program. I took workshops in my (small) home community, but the books, DVDs and other materials can be found online and in libraries.

Love and Logic teaches the adult how to work with disrespectful and irresponsible teens in ways that the adult doesn't get mad and yell at the kids, and the kids of all ages figure out for themselves that they are responsible for their choices. I cannot speak highly enough for this program. I hope it is helpful to your family.

KNEWMETODAY,

I appreciated your comment, "Family is coming to celebrate DIL's birthday. I get really tired when I do these big dinners, but it gives me a new appreciation for all the years my mother did them and never uttered a word of complaint."

I hate housework, and cooking is part of it. I had no idea how much work it was until I had my own home and family. I remember the first day I realized, "I have to know what I am having for dinner the rest of my life!" as during growing up and college, someone else did it for me.

Yes, I greatly appreciated for all of the six decades my mother cooked big dinner for our large family of ten. She seldom asked us to help with preparations (if ever!), and we always had to help with the dishes.

I have had to learn to be grateful for having a nice home, an abundance of food, and hundreds of books to teach me how to cook for my family! Big dinners are hard, and I do appreciate the hard work my mother did for many, many years.

Sometimes, like NOW, I gain a pound or two in a 24-hour period; then, I'll lose a pound or two in the next 24-hour period; and this same cycle keeps going even for a week or so. PLATEAU!! I get really discouraged because, like everyone else, I want to get on with this "weight loss thing!" However, I HAVE NOT QUIT and I WILL NOT QUIT!

I really am doing this healthy thing FOREVER. The slow weight loss will continue - SLOWLY. I've lost 19.2 pounds since May 29. If I had quit before now, this wouldn't be the case - and maybe I would have gained back whatever small amount I had lost. NO, NO - NOT ME! NOT GONNA EVER QUIT!!

I'm just gonna emoticon

...for those who care about us and those who care for us!

I volunteer for Hospice--just visiting patients. My mother was a Hospice patient and lost her battle with leukemia 17 years ago--following the death of my dad to CHF 4 days earlier. The one thing I discovered is how much I really took them for granted!!

For those of you who have parents still living--love them and appreciate them!

Dianne - I'm sorry for the loss of your dad. emoticon

Life just brings what it brings, doesn't it? I don't really have a chance to get depressed because it takes all I have in me to take care of my own illnesses and also my dad's.

My son helps me stay in pretty good spirits. He makes sure we talk every single day and he's very witty with a marvelous dry sense of humor. AND he says (to everyone in any situation) "get busy living or get busy dying!" I think that's a quote from the movie Shawshank Redemption. Anyway, it makes sense to me! On the days I feel really down, I just try to "get busy living!"

Thank God for those who care about us!

Yep, Dianne, the daughter does usually take care of the parents. I took care of my mom through her battle with colon cancer, which she lost within 90 days from her diagnosis. I was right beside her as she took her last breath - at home. I was her "hospice." Since then, for 8 years now, I've taken care of my father, who is 83 and has had too many health care issues to mention. His son, my brother, is too busy to even call him on the telephone. :( It's ok for me. I just feel bad for my dad.

Such is life!

Kathy & Dianne - Well, now I must confess - I had the VERY BEST of BOTH worlds. I had a girl and a boy, both well and healthy! What a blessing! I knew lots of other mothers who had all girls - or all boys - and everybody was happy. I only knew the one person who DID NOT want a girl. Most people are quite happy with either. Had I adopted 2 children, I think I might have asked for both boys - or both girls. Toys, games, clothing and everything can be handed down, passed along and shared! That's efficiency at its best!

And boys like boys to play with - and girls like girls to play with - AT LEAST WHILE THEY'RE LITTLE! emoticon You know, boys think girls are sissies and girls think boys are dumb! emoticon

Congratulations to all the mothers everywhere!

Dianne & Joann, it makes me sad that you've experienced pain at the hands of your mother and daughter. While I realize I wasn't a perfect daughter, I think I did pretty well during my teen years. It was a different time--so many things were different back then. I can't imagine my mother raising her voice to her parents, but I did. In teaching, I witnessed (far too many times) students cussing out their parents, hardly even drawing a breath while doing it.

Now, Tiny, I'm one of THOSE mothers! Of course, both of my sons are adopted and I could specify gender in the application process. Know, of course, that I would have gladly taken either; however, boys were what I wanted. I borrowed a niece for baking, crocheting, etc. Unfortunately, they are separated by nearly 6 years--and I would have preferred them closer together, but that I could not control!!

My sons both live close. The younger one I see more frequently because he drops off Stella twice a week, and I also see them at church. The older one is handy at repairs and helps me when he's able. He works 2nd shift, so it's frequently like making an appointment to see him. They are very different--one pretty much a loner, the other quite social. Both are avid readers. They have made my life better.

I got my nails done this afternoon. Yesterday I mowed...usually the kid next door does it, but I guess he was too busy. (He was supposed to mow last Wednesday.)

Have a pleasant evening.

Kathy

Thanks TINYBUBBA1! I myself wished I had some girls but miscarried 4 of them but I had 3 healthy beautiful boys and have enjoyed my 2 nieces. I don't know how anyone could want either just a boy or a girl, just enjoy what god gives you and love them more than you could love anything else.

I would like to lose at least 25 to 30 pounds by November for my nieces wedding.

I'm sorry for your experience, Dianne. I had a sister-in-law who, when pregnant, said she HAD to have a boy - didn't want anything to do with a girl. When I asked why, she said it was because a girl child might be prettier and smarter and whatever else. I had never heard of such a thing - couldn't even imagine such feelings as that. Thank God she had a boy - and never had any more children. What a sad way of thinking. emoticon

My mom and I never saw eye to eye when I was growing up and when my Dad died she told me the reason she was so mean to me was because she was jealous of me, because she said I was prettier than her and smarter and no one was suppose to be that's what she was told when she was growing up. I did forgive her but I haven't forgotten, it's hard.emoticon
