I am still near the 300 pound mark (in the upper 200s now). I have osteoarthritis in my one knee and a replacement knee in the other that was a botched procedure. I still have terrible pain in both knees. I have set a goal of 2000 steps a day. That is about 1 mile. If the weather is bad and I can't walk outside I walk around Walmart. If I go up and down every aisle I get about a mile in. I am using the cart as balance and stability are still an issue for me but I still count those steps. I have had people tell me that I can't or shouldn't count the steps as exercise until I have at least 5000. I think that's bull crap. Not everyone can do that. I seriously can't imagine ever getting 5000 in one day, much less 10,000 in a day. I guess if I used public transportation (which we don't have in our small town) I might get more in. I'd be using my cane and still going slow and taking small steps. I measured my gait at 21 inches, where before it was 17 inches, so that's good. Anyway, I am just wondering how you all get 10,000 in one day.

I wear a FITBIT. I am challenged to get 10,000 steps a day. PLUS 10 floors a day.
This AM, I decided on a hike not 12 miles from my house, because it was going to be in the 70's. Came home with over 6,000 steps, and 16 floors. Before bed the rest of my steps! WOO!

10,000 steps is a different distance for everyone because of your height.

To get my steps in, I get up and walk frequently (FitBit now has that 250 steps per hour challenge). That, along with not sitting all night (ie, I get up and do the dishes, change the sheets, do some laundry, do some other housework, get my lunch ready at night for the next day, get the coffee ready, etc.) helps me get my 10,000 steps.

Try taking the long way around once in a while. It will help!

I have just started counting my steps but I have not gotten over 8,000. I have a desk job so I have to try to find reasons to get up and get some steps in. I have found that by walking to check the bulk tanks instead of driving adds over 500 steps each time. Also, I park in the very back parking lot so I have to walk farther. I am still working on it but I know I will get there eventually.

Does the 10,000 steps actually help to lose weight?

It's nice to see that I actually did mention a year and a half ago about this very subject. Thank you LJCANNON for bumping the thread.

I still do not count every step as in the home. I'm only counting my dedicated continuous walking exercise. I still wouldn't be hitting the 10,000 steps though. I say at most it is 1 thousand steps in the house, but it could be half that easy. My best bet is to say 300-400 steps max. Hahaha

I expect to legitimately get to my goal number in a few weeks, but the sooner the better.

Attach a big dream to a small beginning, and it won't be small for too long.

I've been averaging between 14,000 - 22,000 a day. I did over 127,631 steps in 7 days.

Progress may be slow, but it happens!
No such thing as last place only finishers.

About half of my 20K a day comes from workouts, the rest, I'm a computer teacher, constantly on the move in my room answering questions and monitoring computer usage. I also have picked up lots of little "extra step" habits like parking farther away, walking to the farthest bathroom, walking every aisle of the store, pacing while on the phone or doing laundry, marching in place while brushing my teeth and as much as I can while cooking dinner.

how do you guys get 20k steps a day!! Even when I was working (retired now as of last fall) at my bakery and walking all day long there and then come home and work out I couldn't get 20k! I would get like maybe 16 or 17k. Wow!

going back to the original post, I aim for 10,000 every day. For my workout days that means 10,000 over and above however many steps I take on my run/walks, on rest days I make a point of walking in place more, parking farther out, being inefficient when putting things away at work or home, walking to the bathroom furthest from me.

emoticon I use the SparkPeople Activity Tracker ( SPAT ) and it automatically syncs with the Computer. I average 12,000-14,000 Steps per day.
If your pedometer doesn't sync with Spark, you can add your Steps manually.

I have a job that keeps me active. I routinely get in 10,000 steps before my lunch break. Because I am used to moving a bunch throughout the day it seems to set me up to step a lot throughout the week. I pace when I talk on the phone, I dance when I cook, if I have to wait for something (like the washer to finish) I tend to walk in place or pace. I like to be moving.

emoticon Great Job, SAMJUL!! I am always harping at my Mother that she needs to get out of her recliner at least every hour for a few minutes. I know she isn't able to Walk long distances or do much Exercise, but she needs to M-O-V-E!!

Hi
I just started wearing my pedomitor again ...my goal is 10000 steps yesterrday was my first day and I did 55% of that ..I sit all day so I basically try to get up at least 1x every hour and walk around the office to get some squats and steps in ...I also do 30 min low impact cardio 3 to 4x a week ...I do it more for health reasons and not losing weight but wearing a peodomitor really does motivate you to keep moving ...
I am also looking into things I can do at my desk workout wise ...but this is great hopefully I will reach the 10k steps soon....

My mom recently got one and I love seeing how dedicated she is to making sure she gets her 10,000 steps in everyday! On her 'rest' days she will aim for 10,000 but usually walk and walk our dog to get them. On days she is crazy at work and can't go on a walk during lunch and has meetings or commitments right after work, she will be upset but understands her limits. It's just as important to get enough sleep as it is to get a workout in. When she can't get in her steps she will make sure her workout the following day is a good one :)

Does anyone have advice for those of us who are desk-bound for the work day? I've started to take walks during my lunch break, but only consistently get to about 7,500-8,500 steps on those days with my normal putzing around the house before and after work. I park far away from my building and use stairs instead of elevators, and I drink a ton of water to force myself to make a bathroom trip every so often throughout the day.

Much to my surprise, I hit 20,000 steps one day recently.

I had a Thursday off (odd work schedule) so I did an hour of Zumba in the morning. Then I went to an outdoor arts festival in the evening. I parked maybe 8 blocks away...walked to the festival, walked from one end to the other, and came back. Nothing extraordinary.

I've only had a Fitbit for a couple of months. My biggest surprise has been how many steps I get in when doing heavy housecleaning. Just moving around my small apartment, going up and down stairs to take out garbage and do the laundry...it all adds up.

Every other day I manage just under ten thousand, but I may get ten thousand, but I am not counting the back and forth in my home which is not much walking. However it does count, as I am not floating. Lol

Attach a big dream to a small beginning, and it won't be small for too long.

I find this really hard. I got the SP tracker....I don't always get in 6,000 steps. I know my desk job keeps me down.....I guess I'll have to keep trying!!!

I cook for a living and used a pedometer the other day just to see how much I walk in a day at work. 9,679 steps. Just an average day. I couldn't believe it. LOL
