I can completely relate! I used to exercise in the middle of the day because I lived on the third floor and felt bad about jumping round when I thought people would be home to get annoyed. (I definitely don't want someone pounding on my ceiling!)

It sounds like you have a good relationship with your neighbors. They were kind enough to come talk to you instead of getting the management involved (10 is a touch on the late side) and it sounds like you worked to find a solution so you wouldn't bother them in the future. Sounds pretty considerate all around.
: )

I agree, I think it's a bit unfair to expect your upstairs neighbours to go to a gym just because you don't like the noises their exercising creates. Particularly if they OWN their appartment. They can do whatever they like in there!
That being said, I think it's only fair and reasonable to leave your exercise to between 8am (if you're a day worker) and 8pm. That way most people will be up and active and not upset about being kept awake :)
It's good to hear that you've worked things out, thankfully they responded in a mature fashion and understood that you didn't know it was a problem.

What have you done today that you're proud of?

While I sympathize with your neighbors, it is unfair of them to dictate your activity... particularly if the activity is reasonable. Try a mat or carpet under your machine ~ but people who live below you must understand that it comes with a certain amount of noise that is just unavoidable.

I live in an apartment too and worry about the same thing! Some noise is to be expected in any shared living situation; my upstair neighbors play fetch with their dogs, and I'm sure that the first floorers hear me stomping around sometimes while doing lunges. It's great that you and the neighbors worked it out in a mature fashion.

Are you handing out free gym memberships? Because if you are, I could really use one because I (like many other apartment dwellers) can't afford one. Could you also babysit for me so I could have the freedom to go to a gym?

Many people don't think about their neighbours, if you live in a appartment it is better to join the gym..
As a resthome helper I help many elderly people living at home.. Some people screw up their music so high I can't carry out a conversation with my client without frustration..
Also think about high heels on a wood floor and screaming children and pets banging around when your not home..
Some people are just too polite to say stuff, many people can come to peaceful solutions but would you approach a heavy tattoo idiot with alot of rings in their nose and the attitude of a pitbull terrier??
Take it to the gym, keep it down and think if you are trapped in a appartment block with noisey neigbours. Why should quiet neighbours move because other people just don't get it. I don't approach people anymore, I get the landlord out and let them deal with it. Last time I tried talking to someone they spread dog crap all over the persons front door. When the landlord saw this they got kicked out..

I talked with my neighbors again this evening. I told them I had put some foam under the elliptical and wouldn't exercise late at night. (I guess I had never done that before, or maybe if I had, they hadn't been trying to sleep at the time.) Either way, I think we're both reasonable. They understand the hardship of living on the first floor, and said they didn't mind the noise earlier in the day. I appreciate their attitude. I just want to be a good neighbor.

That can be frustrating! We live in an upstairs apartment so feel your pain. When we moved in we talked to our neighbors in advance about noise levels/expectations so at least we felt comfortable coming to each other with any complaints. We try to be as quiet (as is reasonable) once it hits about 9-10 pm. Did your neighbor feel upset because the exercising was late at night? What if you moved it to an hour or so earlier?

Tell them to move. LOL

I live on the top floor of an apartment so I have to be carefull of making too much noise too. But from the excercise equipment you have the only noise they could possibly be hearing would be the floor creaking and the only thing that could help that might be some foam. Other than that the only other think you could do would be to excercise earlier than 10pm. I had an elderly lady living under me and she would complain about "thumping" from my apartment. I just blamed it on my son playing and so she stopped complaining to me because this is a child friendly building. I think the thumping really was from me though. emoticon

I think the foam exercise mat is all you can do. Invite your neighbours to please come and let you know if it bothers them again, and if it continues to do so then make arrangements to work out at more convenient times.

Unfortunately, sometimes hearing the upstairs neighbours is a part of apartment living. You can provide a mat, you can choose the timings, but it's too much for them to ask you to stop it altogether. They should just appreciate that it's not jazzercise or something with heavy dropping like kettlebells or weights. :)

I live in a second story apartment. Last night I discovered that my exercise is disturbing my downstairs neighbors. I have a mini-elliptical and a recumbent bike. I'm not sure how the bike impacts them but they came up to complain last night while I was on the elliptical. Maybe they complained because it was 10:00 p.m. Maybe I should be exercising that late anyway. I've lived here for six months and this is the first time they mentioned it. I put a foam exercise mat under it. Maybe that will help.

I need to exercise at home and the neighborhood is not safe for me to walk or run. Any tips or suggestions?
