Make sure you're treating your workout like an appointment... schedule it into your day in advance, actually WRITE IT on your calendar (with the time), and then do it when you said you would. It might also help to figure out a reward for completing your workout. You could choose something very small that you reward yourself with every day, something more moderate that you give yourself if you meet your goals for the week, or something even BIGGER that you can save up for (giving yourself a small monetary reward for each workout or week, keeping it in a visible place, and knowing that when you get to the specified amount, you get the reward).

I have a mini trampoline (rebounder). I started out just marching on it while watching tv with the family. I now jog on it and do jumping jacks. When I'm done I just roll it back in the closet. Recently I have added classes at the fitness center ~ something I have never before pursued. They had a $30 class pass and it is good for as many classes as you can take for 30 days. I have done spinning, step aerobics, kick step and walk aerobics. The classes were more challenging than I expected and I definately feel like it is something I want to continue with. Having other people, music, and someone leading the session all is very motivating. You might want to give that a try. Best to you, Rhonda
Consistency.. that is the secret!

I would definitely check out the SP videos! They are quick and not too difficult! I really like the 10 minute cardio kickboxing one!

I do three things to motivate me: 1. I workout with a friend during the week. It helps alot because I have to go. She pushes me and it makes me accountable to someone else. If it is up to me, I won't go. I have a thousand excuses. 2. I have a trainer. I have to pay. He will kick my butt if I don't go and I have to pay for the session. Easier to go. 3. I work out before work. It is really hard but so much easier in the long run. I can't really find excuses at 5 AM because I can not think.
Also, you are not lazy. It is hard to make a life change to lose weight and work out regularly. It is also scary. I didn't work out for four days last week and I would have continued not to work out if it were not for the buddy and the trainer. Enlist someone and motivate each other!

I didn't like fitness either. I bought a cheap pedometer and started walking and logging my steps, time, and calories burned. I then added a few strength training excersices. Squats, abduction, hip flexors I can do these at my desk when I do stretching. Start slow and add a few more every other week or so.

Do the health risk test. If your results doesn't motivate you then buy a 3-way mirror (and I don't say this to be mean). It does give you a new perspective of yourself.
Good luck, Dude

Walking is excellent cardiovascular exercise ! That's a great start if you enjoy walking. If you find that exercise is boring, you need to find something that you enjoy. Exercise should be fun and enjoyable. Because when we enjoy doing something, we look forward to doing it each and every day.
How about a dance DVD ? Ever wanted to try belly dancing ? How about salsa ? Do you like cycling ? Take a bike ride. There are so many different things you can do, try them all. Find out which one you like best and stick with it. There has to be something you like. Bowling ? tennis ? okay, it's winter... skiing ? ice skating ? shoveling ? yes, shoveling snow is an excellent workout. When it start snowing, get outside and shovel your walk way.
Also, try short workouts. If working out for 30 minutes is too much, try working out for 10 minutes. 10 minute workouts are big these days and if you do three each day, that's 30 minutes. The Spark People fitness section has some short workouts you could try.
There are also things you can do to make your life more active that don't require you to do traditional exercise. You could take the stairs instead of the escalator. when you go to the mall or grocery store, park at the far end of the lot and walk the extra way. if you take a bus, get off one or two stops before and walk the rest of the way home. If you take an elevator, get off one or two flights before and walk up those flights.
That may not seem like much, but those are simple ways to make your life more active. Which is the true goal of doing exercise. Too many Americans have become sedentary. They need to get up off the couch and do something, anything. Being a couch potato is the worst thing you can do for your health. The human body thrives on movement. Don't let it root.
Also, you should consider adding a day or two of strength training. Increase your lean muscle. Muscle burns fat. the more lean muscle you carry, the more efficient your body will be at burning fat.
You can buy a set of resistance bands for cheap at any Target, Walmart, Sears, etc... do some strength exercises while you watch TV. You can workout and watch TV at the same time.
Mostly, you have to convince yourself that you ARE worth the extra effort !! You can do this if you set your mind to it. Anything is possible with hard work.
You can do this !

The nice thing about Sparkpeople, Nancy, is that it creates a fitness plan for you. The strength training exercises are a great way to tone muscle and burn calories, and best of all, almost anyone can do them! I have found 2-3 I can do when I take a stretch break WHILE I'm at work! You just have to realize that there is nothing more important than your health and well being and decide to make a change. Good luck!

Roxy, It's great that you've started by taking up walking. That shows you CAN keep to a fitness regimen.
Perhaps now is the time to set a goal. Nancy, one of our resident experts, often reminds us that setting goals can be a powerful motivator. Maybe sign up for a 5K race that is 3 months from now. Then you can do the SparkPeople Couch to 5K (C25K) program. Many have found that a great way to progress in their fitness program. The worst that can happen is that you walk instead of run the 5K. The best that can happen is that you actually run it and love running.
I also suggest getting a set of free weights and starting strength training to complement your aerobic program. There are great demos of strength training exercises on this site. And you can sometimes find weights at garage sales or on Craig's list. Walmart sells them as well, perhaps a Christmas gift from one of your family members?
I don't think you are lazy at all. You already walk regularly. You may just be hesitant, so set a goal, and get out there, and DO IT!!
