If you want a constant tempo, look into mixes that are designed for group exercise instructors. The can be bought on CD or as a download. They come in all different music categories. There are many companies that mix this type, look for ones that use original artists, the other ones kinda suck and are more expensive.

I have a smartphone and use the free Pandora app. I have a station I created called Lady Gaga and one created called Pink. It finds music like theirs, and just plays it. They work great for working out. Of course I have my BonJovi station, too. ;) Sometimes I am in a country mood and plug in my Taylor Swift station, or Lady Antebellum. It works for me. :)

“Firework” by Katy Perry.

Why: Because, yes, thank you, I do feel like a plastic bag drifting through the wind and I do want to start again.

“Amazing Grace” by Dropkick Murphys

Why: What is NOT to love about a rock version of Amazing Grace that involves both electric guitars AND bagpipes?

“Everyday Superhero” by Smashmouth

Why: Read the title.

“First Dance” by Never Say Never

Why: Cute, cute upbeat, jazzy little song!!! Makes me fees like I'm in high school again! Check out others by Never Say Never: “Can’t Stand It” (there is a "clean" and x-rated version) and “Cheater, Cheater, Best Friend Eater” (Yes, it is about being cheated on, but the peppy tune and the way the feelings are expressed make it almost cute...if that is possible...)

“Right In” by Skrillex

Why: Speaks to the “head banger” part of me.

“Supermassive Black Hole” by Muse

Why: I do my warrior poses (yoga) to this one. Works for me.

Last, but not least:

I’m Not a Vampire” by Falling in Reverse.

I'm gonna spend the most energy on explaining this one as it is an odd choice, but one that I'm a little obsessed with right now. You are either going to love it or hate it. There is not a lot of in-between....

I hate to admit this, but it feeds my dark side.... but without making me want to cut my wrists.

Everything Ronnie Radke wrote for his comeback album “The Drug in Me is You” is dark, brooding and expresses a sort of fury, rage and savagery that takes my breath away. It’s like watching a train wreck....and I just can’t look away right now. It is his response to being kicked out of "Escape the Fate", overdosing and being sent to jail (not necessarily in that order!)

The circus music in "Caught Like a Fly" and the carousel like quality to "Tragic Magic" belies the "screamo" hardcore punk roots of this artist.

It's quite brilliant, and again, I'm quite fascinated by many of the songs on the album.

Check out some of his other songs: "Raised by Wolves, “Caught Like a Fly” and let me know what you think of the furious "primal scream" and psycho sentiments expressed in “Pick up the Phone.”

Warning: Everything on "The Drug in Me is You" is explicit and NOT for the faint of heart.

Spark on!

Have you tried the website jog.fm? You put in how fast of a walk, jog, or bike ride you want to do and it gives you page after page of song suggestions. Most songs have music clips with them, so you can see if you like them and there are links to purchase the music, too. I've found quite a few songs on the site.

Great suggestions! I just tried adding music to my exercise routine (normally done in front of the tv to keep me motivated) but I just switched to music! I've been adding some Pussycat Dolls, Train & Ricky Martin. I also downloaded one of the workout music albums from itunes for a little more variation - I knew I should look here first for other suggestions! Thanks!

I have two different "workout" playlists in my iPod.
One is full of rock music that gives me that almost angry edge when I really want to push myself...Union Underground, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, Disturbed, etc.
Two is full of upbeat "poppy" type stuff. I stole some of my daughter's Hannah Montana and High School Musical stuff, and I added it to Britney, Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera, etc.

I don't listen to really poppy upbeat music, so I don't have any on my Iphone/pod, but the Pandora app is awesome because it plays random, but great work out music. try it if you haven't.

Thanks for JogTunes.com link! I notice that it lets me look up what I've already GOT a recording of, too, so that I can mix a workout of songs I've already purchased the right to listen to! The BPM (beats per minute) function lets me select warm up and cool down songs, and while I'm nowhere near able to DO the workout I can plan, this gives me something to which I can aspire.

Thanks again for a link to a useful resource!

If you go to Pandora.com and enter one of your favorite workout songs, listen for awhile and you'll get more suggestions that are similar beats. If you especially like or dislike a song, click that button on that song and the music will become more and more exactly like what you're looking for!

I really love rock/metal on the elliptical. All-time favorite is "Slither" by Velvet Revolver. It has a great beat for interval. Also love Metallica: Sad But True is great for level 16 using as a stepper.

Not usually a metal head but it makes my workouts go so much faster!

When it comes to strength training the heavier and more intense, the better for me. Prodigy, Rob Zombie, stuff like that. Really intense beats, harsh voices.

Cardio, I'm good with whatever is upbeat. Lady Gaga is always a huge pick me up! :)

Back when I was able to do a full cardio, I really liked to use the Brainsync workouts. They had several advantages for me. First, the tape or CD includes its own warmup and cooldown, and that was useful for me, because it's easy to forget. Second, the tapes varied in speed according to where you were in your training, and third they included a kind of zone in frequency that was helpful in getting the runner's "high" that is a physical incentive to keep exercising.

Another thing I've enjoyed is using "beach music" with a pace that suits my training situation. That music style works for me because it's the one that appeals, on an emotional level, to the kid in me who wanted to have fun in about the middle school years.

The important thing is to pick what appeals to you and include warm up and cool down songs in the mix.

Best of luck!

Lately Flo Rida-Right Round. It's harder and has more energy than Dead or Alive's original but I still like them both. I also love both Supermassive Black Hole (from Twilight-the baseball game) and Uprising, both by The Resistance. All are good easy-intermediate speed walking songs (if you walk to the beat).

All things in moderation.

EVERYTHING tastes as good as thin feels!

I like listening to Meatloaf's Bat Out Of Hell cd's. His songs go fast then slow a little then speed up. I find walking or jogging to his music makes the time go faster.

I didn't put weight on overnight and it won't come off overnight either.

Lets see I was asking myself this question just last night on my freezing cold walk.

I love all music rock, country, 80's ect.. But mostly I love to workout to rock. Last night it was Panic at the Disco there cd A Fever You Can't Sweat Out. Its up beat rock with some dance beats.. Tonight if doesn't snow I think I might go for some rob zombie and his CD American Made Musci to strip By. Again up beat rock with Dance Beats to keep me going.

It is so cool to see all of our varieties. Makes me want to "break away" and sample a taste of everyone's music.

After Robert Ullrey, of course! (C25) LOL

I like metal, hard rock - it's all about the drums.

It's just like dancing - Slow drum beats, no matter how uplifting the song, will lead to slow steps and slow motions. Fast drums means faster motions and a harder music means tighter and more aggresive muscle motions. Think about it. (Learned this from a DJ who was also a fitness instructor when I worked in a bar once.)

I embrase those things in my life that give me joy and pleasure. Those that wound or displease me, I crush under the heel of my boot.

The 80s are by far the BEST!!

But if you are looking for holiday tunes, Trans Siberian Orchestra's "wizards in winter" is a great move tune, "step into christmas" by Elton John, thinks like that.

I have a huge list as I love music, so just ask if these sound like your type :o)

The Artist Girl Talk. By far the most fun a workout has ever been for me. They mix two completely different songs together and keep mixing other songs .. to make a whole song-- if that makes sense. Anyway, look at my new blog i just wrote about this today!

For me, anything with a gud beat but I love BEP, the majority of their tracks have a good, fast beat to them. I'm gonna take my partner's advice and add some calmer "warm up/ cool down" tracks.

I am learning to listen to music while I am running... it still messes up my breathing! Also, I get a little paranoid when I can't hear the noises around me... I've been chased by a german shepard before and got bit by a chow chow... So if I listen to music I can't hear the animals coming to get me!

My music choice though is emo punk... anything happy with a fun beat. My husband listens to Elvis...
