COLUMBINE2, I know you had to like it or rather love it there to be in the snow for 7 months. I don't think for one minute I would vacation in the mountains for more than 1 week. That is too much snow and ice for me...

I can't stand inhaling all that cold air while exercising. I give to you AFLBANDWAGON. I am in Georgia and don't get snow, but the air is cold and I will not exercise outdoor when it is too cold for me to breathe properly.

I live in the Rocky Mountains, so we have snow for 7 months. I snowshoe up our mountain (can burn 800 calories in a couple of hours) and I shovel a lot. I used to hate shoveling, but once I got a heart rate monitor, I love it...can get accurate credit for the calories burned. Great!

HOLLYBEE110, I can relate to the shoveling the snow because when I was living in New York, maybe that was the only physical exercise I had to look forward to each year. New York gets a little too juch snow for such a busy city.

I have a vhs tape "walking away the pounds" that I do in my living room. It is equal to walking 1 mile. It is easy to do but works. I need to get the 2nd tape which is equal to two miles. For now I just do the 1 mile tape twice a day. A lot of people where I live walk inside a mall as well. Jean

I run and bike outside, year 'round. During the darkest/coldest part of winter I run more, ride less. I don't do gyms, I've tried. I'm best off outside. Or at the worst, I put my road bike on the trainer at home and ride here.

I used to run outside 3x a week and work out indoors on the other days. Now with it very cold and dark at 5 am it's not safe for me anymore. So I joined a tiny gym that only has treadmills/machines and I go run there 2x a week, and do other stuff the other days. On saturdays I run outside to prep for my 5K run next week and keep my outside running legs in touch with nature! I dont let any icy weather impede my workout goals.

A treadmill is a handy thing, I put mine in front of the TV and watch music videos on the DVR, a half hour goes by quickly.

So many of you recommend walking or running outside even in the cold, snowy weather. Anytime I've tried this, it makes my throat and lungs burn. Does anyone else have this problem? How do I avoid it?

Almost the exact same things I do during the summer minus the swimming!
I do strength training and cardio workouts (P90X, ballet, and belly dance workouts) inside plus I still run. I run my best when it is cold AND wet, so as much as i can't stand the cold, I know I will do my best running during these months.

I do the same things I do in the summer minus yard work. Since I exercise at home using videos, exercise TV or Sparkpeople.com, I still do that. I also walk, but I must admit..I have my temperature limits for walking outside. When it goes into single digits and below, I'd rather not go outside and walk. If it's still early enough in the day, I go to our mall and do mall walking.

In Atlanta, snow is never an issue, so outdoor activities are rarely canceled. But when it gets too cold and wet, I like yoga booty ballet "cabaret cardio" and doing calming yoga stretches as well as food portioning. In general, most people eat more food in the winter than the summer months because it's cooler and our bodies want fat to stay warm, so portion control is much more important to pay attention to during that season. The plus side is that there are so many yummy, healthy soup options out there that are a blast for cold, damp days.

We are the exact opposite here in Florida, it is too hot outside most of the year but the winter is great! When the weather keeps me in I workout to Jillian's 30 day shred, Biggest Loser Cardio Max or use the treadmill, elliptical, step, dumbbells, stability ball and resistance band.

I would never have considering running in the winter... aren't you afraid of slipping and falling?
I use the Wii Fit, mini trampoline and my Jane Fonda work out videos. :-)
Vibeke ~ Putting the vegetables back in vegetarian.
I'm the same way - I like to get outside and be active versus doing weights in my living room. I've found that running in winter is a blast - I try to avoid sidewalks and roads because of the ice, but if you can find a trail or even a school yard, the snow makes it much harder to run providing great cardio and a butt busting leg workout at the same time!

I have been going to the gym for 6 weeks straight now and tracking my food her on SparkPeople has made a huge difference. I have lost 14 lbs and it is been mostly by tracking calories. I have been running on the treadmill and riding the exercise bike. I have been hitting the weights 4 or 5 days a week and 150 crunches a day on several different of the ab. machines at the gym. I play inline hockey twice a week a well.

A couple of years ago I took up cross country skiing! It is a great way to keep in shape when it's cold and snowy - a relatively inexpensive winter sport - and a wonderful way to get out and enjoy what little sunshine we get in the winter!

I have the P90X series available to me and I use the Kempo and CardioX videos. They only take 45 minutes, but you feel as though it has been a while. You work so many muscles it is amazing. I will say that you will feel it after a day or two, but don't give up! Use that as motivation to do more and get farther. The YogaX video is also great for a time filler, 1 1/2 is what it takes, but it is probably the most intense yoga workout I have ever seen. A lot of vinyasas, and getting up and down, lots of muscle usage! A great way to firm up while being indoors. Plus they have a lean program which will tell you what videos to use and a diet planner to make eating easier.

Shovelling snow is awesome cardio, burns a ton of calories and it needs doing anyway so for me it is win win. I also play in the snow with my kids (although my husband and I used to do it before the kids)When it is too cold for that or there is no snow I use my fitness equipment (bike and gazelle) or dvds or do simple stuff like play with the kids in the house running around and up and down stairs and all that. I also will focus more on heavy cleaning (which burns a fair amount and gets my house ready for any holiday visitors or afterwards recovers the house from the holidays) in winter since I am not wasting a nice spring, fall or summer day doing it. A few years ago when I was doing the diet thing (before more kids and other weight setbacks) I switched to more of a focus on strength traning and kind of minimized my cardio to 20-30 minutes 3-4 times a week rather than the 60-90 minutes 5-7 times a week I was doing during the fall, that seemed to trick my body too as come spring when i went back to the fall routine I lost a bunch at once.

it's easier for me b/c my work has a gym on site! so i have no excuse to not go to the gym. this winter i'm also taking up snowboarding. hopefully full days @ the slopes will blast off some calories!
Bundle up and go to the gym. Continue to eat healthy and minimal amounts of yummy holiday treats. I still manage to gain roughly 3-5 pounds during the holiday season- but that's because during the summer we're always outside.

In the cold weather I tend to stay in more and exercise. I have an abundance of DVDs so I don't get bored and I have some variety. I also took ballroom dancing with my husband, belly dancing with my girlfriends, play in snow with kids, occasionally walk outdoors all bundled up. Community high schools and colleges normally have a large selection of exercise programs that are inexpensive so I always look to see what they are offering during the "off" season. I know my community center also has a pool so I can do that as I always need low impact for my knees. Sledding and skiing are always fun but I only do those on occasion with the family. My parents have an indoor gym that I could go to but that would require planning and I am not an exercise planner. I do what is easy and convenient and I am really not ready to enter the "gym" yet. Good luck finding your "perfect" winter exercise idea.

Make plenty of warming soup and freeze it to eat when I come in from feeding and mucking out the horses and feeding the chickens on my daughters stable yard.Keeping active and take as much fresh air as possible but keep dry and warm. I live on the borders of Scotland UK.

In the winter you can either go outside and go skiing or play in the snow with your kids. You wouldn't believe how much of a workout you get chasing little ones through the snow. Also you can go to the gym or just get a workout video.

Cozy up in front of the fireplace with a martini...ok, maybe not to stay in physical shape, but it does help the mental state when the days are short and dreary. I hope we get enough snow this winter here in northern illinois. And if we do, I like to go xc skiing. You can do it almost anywhere -parks, trails, golf course, neighbors lawn, etc.

Last year I started snow shoeing. It's a wonderful workout, no talent needed. I found I could go out in most weather, and that is saying something as I live in Northern WI. I don't push it too hard and I am only out for about 45 min. Last year I dropped 10# after a few weeks. I was shocked. It is very hard for me to lose wt now that I am "old". , Sandy

I walk year round, just bundle up more in the winter.

If it's too cold to bundle up and run outside, I walk or do intervals on the treadmill. I also do a lot more workout dvds.

Fortunately I live in Florida, so it's great for walking outside. I even do my resistance outside during the winter. During the hot season, I go to the gym.

In New York I never exercise in the snow. Here in Georgia I go to the gym or do it indoor.

When it gets very cold, I use a mini trampoline to jog indoors. The very cold air makes me wheeze, so even though I love exercising outdoors, when winter comes, I put a long DVD on and jog while I watch.

I plan to layer up a bit more, wear a scarf and hat when it gets really brutal. And watching where I walk/jog. I don't enjoy exercising indoors much. I get bored. Plus that brisk wake up in the morning fuels me a bit more! The cold makes me move faster since I know that the faster I move the warmer I'll be!

I recently started my second round of P90X, I am definetly staying busy with that. I am also doing interval runs on the treadmill, since it gets dark before I get home. Loving every minute of it.

I go jogging...anytime, and anywhere. When I go at night, I wear a reflective vest and flashing lights so traffic sees me. I prefer daytime and dry conditions. However, I often jog in rain, wind, and/or cold down to about 30 degrees F. I walk when it snows, and jog indoors on the treadmill at the Fitness Club when it roads are icy, if I can get there.

I ride my bike on my indoor trainer, use my Wii Active Game, do dvd's, and strength train at home. I hate the winter cause I love bike riding outdoors but if I keep things going with variety I make it through until spring without loosing ground on my fitness level.

I did belly dancing one winter and loved it. It sure is a workout. I think I burned more calories laughing with my friends than I did actually dancing. Winter can be depressing if you live somewhere cold for a good part of the year. I think it is good to make your workouts fun and beat the winter blahs!

Well I used to go snowboarding with my brother... but now I have to find something else to do. I have trouble squeezing in a workout routine with a tiny livingroom and a baby who seems to know when I am trying to take "me" time....I'm still looking and open to suggestion on this one! Some friends and I have considered getting together at least once a week and learning belly dancing or other fun and different things to keep ourselves interested.Plus getting all the little kiddos together might keep them occupied long enough for us to do it!

Living in Marina Del Rey, CA the weather is pretty nice even in winter so I can continue doing outdoor activities with an adjustment of warmer clothes. If it's really cold and wet out, I do the 6 flights of stairs at work a few times a day. Plus my complex has a state of the art gym so that helps as well.

WELL, in the past that meant modifying my activities to indoors, typically the gym or my indoor treadmill...
However this year I refuse to give into the cold! I know that the Winter is approaching & snow is another thing but I plan to continue my runs outside in the cold weather & just by warmer clothing...
We shall see

Leslie Sansome, she has so many videos out now. I love the 3 mile, not too pleased with the immaturity in the 5 mile but it's a good hour walk. Her videos are very easy to follow. I found her walks much more interesting than the boring treadmill.
If you have cable tv and a dvr system many exercise programs can be found for free on the exercise tv channel. Leslie, Carmen Electra, Biggest Loser, etc etc can be found on there. They have workouts for cardio, sculpting, and yoga and pilates too.
I recently joined the YMCA, I get there when they open at 5am, go on a treadmill, and get back home before everyones day starts. Its great to go that early, it's not crowded and I get a great workout in before my daily life sets in.

I walk on my elliptical any time the weather doesnt' permit me to get outside. I love warm sunshine so when I can get outside I do, but the elliptical is a great indoor butt kicker.

We get a bit of snow since we live in the middle of so many lakes. I love to be out in the snow any chance I can. Shoveling always makes me feel like I have accomplished something, and I know I am burning mega calories. But snowshoe racing is the ultimate winter sport! What a challange! Of course sledding is lots of fun with friends and snowball fights with the kids are great too!
