My barriers are sheer laziness, love of beer/wine, and pain.
When I get home from a 10-hour day, the very last thing I want to do is exercise. I've recently overcome this by bike commuting to work. I get 70 minutes of exercise split between morning and evening, so that by the time I get home, I'm DONE. On the days I don't bike, I've decided to add weight training.
The beer/wine thing has been a battle for a while. I tend to get into a pattern of having one or two drinks almost every night, which is unhealthy and definitely isn't conducive to losing weight. When I have a drink or two, I also tend to eat since alcohol stimulates appetite. But since I've started biking to work, that glass of wine doesn't seem so tempting when I know I'll be on my bike at 6:30am.
I've had foot pain for over a year, and for a long time I let it sideline me. It's finally starting to subside. Again, biking has been a huge step to overcoming this barrier. I wish I could walk/run, but it's just not in the cards right now.

I'm still just keeping up self-motivation but I try to find friends that are like me around this small town, maybe some fitness buddies, but most of everyone around here just hangs out and drinks. =( No fun activities really either.

I use to think that time and money were my barriers but now I know my true barrier was me and all my excuses and now that I am calling myself on those excuses I find that I can finally lose weight for the first time in 15 years.

A lot of times it is time. I will have the day off and do laundry all day and then think later I will do exercise and then my kids come home and they have a ton of homework and need my help. Money can also be an issue. Trying to feed 6 adults and 2 teen boys can become expensive.

T-I-M-E!!!!!! I work full time, weird shifts, I am a full time graduate student, in addition to being a wife and mom. Sometimes drive thru is just easier, or prep time for dinner cuts into work out time. Or by the time I get home FINALLY I am too tired to even think. Add stress eating to the equation and you have 278 pounds!!!

My biggest barrier is planning I fail to plan my entire day in relationship to what I eat so sometimes i'm starving and end up eating anything also cost. More healthy food is expensive and if it's affordable it meants a lot of prep time to prepare it.....aggghhhh

My biggest barrier is definitely my husband's junk food habit. He is always suggesting we go out for ice cream or daiquiris (two of my favorite, favorite things!) and it's hard for me to always resist temptation without feeling deprived. The pantry is usually full of his unhealthy snacks and treats. I know it would be easier if we were both eating healthy.

I agree with JSMAMA3. When my husband is home on weekends. He wants to go out to eat and to the movies or another favorite activity for us is to crank up the blender and break out the Captain Morgan rum. I don't think I would cheat every weekend if I was at home by myself. He is otherwise very supportive of my lifestyle change, but he says that I should have one day a week to let loose. I think it is just undoing all my hard work during the week.

I know exactly what you mean and I don't think we are alone on this one. Food is more than just eating...it's an experience... so I too feel deprived. I am trying to shift my way of thinking to looking at food as fuel and nothing more. But that being said it's hard. Check out Tom Venuto on the web. I found out about his habit changing plan 2 weeks ago and trying it out. You eat often so I don't feel as deprived. :)

Living with other people who don't eat healthy- we literally have 5 different kinds of cookies in the pantry, as well as homemade ones in the freezer, at least 2 types of ice cream at all times, and this is just the beginning. There's no way for me to avoid temptation- it's always there and I have to push through it on my own.
I think one of my biggest barriers is the fact that I feel deprived when I can't eat the food, or even as much of the food, that someone else is eating. Even though I can have delicious, satisfying healthy food (or eat a little of the unhealthy), it doesn't seem to help. I don't know if anyone knows what I mean, but I really feel deprived.

I love food. In the evening I want snacks before dinner. And I don't exercise enough. Twice a week but usually not more, this everyday thing - not for me. But I would like to increase to 4x per week. But sometimes exercising makes me hungrier, so it is a tough balance. Overall a love of food and laziness to exercise has given me my spare tire.

Fast food. It’s way too convenient. However, with the help of SparkRecipes, I’m finding ways to make my own, healthy fast food. So coming home to a crockpot full of low calorie food is much better!

WORK. Work is my biggest barrier. If it isn't someone's birthday, someone is bringing in homemade cookies, pies, or buying donuts for the office. Of course my office happens to be directly across from the kitchen, which doesn't help either!!!

My biggest barrier is physical. I have been hit by an 18 wheeler truck twice in my life so as a result I cannot walk or stand for long as one of my legs goes numb and I collapse. The other leg has a bad painful knee from a fall several years ago. And I have vertigo. I think I eat o.k. but the musculo-skeletal problems weigh me down.

My biggest barrier is that I don't plan--make meals ahead of time--what to eat/when to eat. (I hate planning, not really sure why though. I think it's the food preparing that I hate more than the actual planning. Or I think I went to extreme and made BORING meals that I didn't like and I rebelled-I ate fairly well, just not "extreme".)
I think at one time, I didn't want to pay the price of healthy things. Now, I don't care. I just want to FEEL better on a minute-by-minute basis.
Just do it! It really isn't as hard or as time consuming as my mind wants me to believe.

My biggest challenge is from those that are closest to me. We always socialize over food. When I suggest we stay in and cook (healthier options), it seems that someone always has a reason why we need to go out. Sometimes I feel like they sabotage me, but I know that I have to make the right decisions when I'm with them. This is my choice to be healthy, not theirs.

It's definitely hanging out with friends on the weekends - drinking, late night eating, etc.
I've started going to 2 hours worth of classes on Saturday mornings so that I'm more inclined to get the energy and metabolism going, and I'm more likely to not want to "ruin" my great workout with pizza at 1am.

Not being able to keep up with the CRAZY routines that I feel like I should be following long term.
I'm really good at working out for two hours every day of the week... for about three weeks. Then real life kicks back in. Just like I'm really good at eating 1250 calories a day every day... until I get invited to a dinner party, where that's the amount of calories in the appetizers alone.
I'm on a quest to find the closest-to-normal eating plan, and the closest-to-a-normal-active-lifestyle activity level that I can, just so that I can keep it up for the long haul and make it a LIFESTYLE and not a temporary DIET.

The stress of caring for many others with high levels of need and carrying the family financial burden alone.

I can deff identify with you also. One of my biggest issues is portion control/self control. Even when i try to portion what I'm about to eat... I end up eating the rest that wasn't put on my plate and then I feel bloated. I'm sure if everyone could just reduce the portions they eat we could all get to our goal... easier said then done i guess.

I agree. Both of my best friends are in college so they have no idea what healthy is. So when they come home and we have movie night, it's dominos pizza, cheesy bread and alcohol all weekend. That deff will not help me reach my goal.
