We are going traditional, three tier, round, with either fresh flowers or snowflakes. Each tier with different flavors. Bottom chocolate kahlua cake with chocolate ganache filling, middle tier white almond infusion cake with caramel buttercream and top most (because my fiance loves chocolate and peanutbutter), devils food cake with peanutbutter buttercream
My fiance and I met almost 30 years ago, in second grade. We both lived in a tiny country town in Texas and grew up friends. We lost touch after high school and reconnected a couple of years ago, we have been together ever since. A friend of ours owns a bakery and is making a replica of our elementary school for our cake. I love the beautiful, traditional cakes but the school cake was my fiance's idea and I love it...who can argue with that kind of sentimentality from the man they love? :) Also, Lotus, something to consider if you like the look of fondant but not the taste...possibly use a marshmallow fondant. Tastes so much better and more like real frosting, but still has that beautiful, smooth fondant look.
Last night I talked to my mom and made the decision to get a bunch of pies from Norma's (a southern home-style restaurant). I think this will be more fun and definitely a lot cheaper. We're going with a southern brunch theme for our reception, so I think it'll go nicely with everything. So, no traditional wedding cake for me!

We are having a small cake after our ceremony that comes with the Disney Escape package but for our at home reception I am having cupcakes all tiered to look like a wedding cake. I think it's more fun and more us. We're also going to have small pastry boxes if people would rather take a cupcake home. We are going to have a small top layer cake for cutting purposes at the reception also.

A wedding cake can have different flavors on each layer. Or you can also have a main cake, then have a smaller groom's cake.
I chose a yellow cake with lemon filling very light to offset the buttercream frosting and just a few flowers in an asymmetrical style. But we love chocolate so the groom's cake - designed to look like a vintage auto since my fiancée was in the car business - was Devil's food with coconut topping outlined in chocolate. Was a big hit, not very pricey, and tasted great. Guests had a choice and no leftovers. Chocolate with raspberry would have been good too, and strawberry filling in a white cake is popular here on the west coast as berries are harvested 10 months a year.

One of my fiance's best friends make amazing cupcakes and she has offered to make them as our gift. She makes a Lemon Blueberry to die for and I think I will ask her to try a maple with candied bacon. My family will be traveling from New England to Utah and I want to throw in some of our tastes where I can!

My daughter is planning to make our cupcakes and still undecided on if we will have some type of layer cake to go with it. I figure I probably will just because I already bought a cake topper for it before we had even decided to go with cupcakes. Just a simple outdoor summer wedding country style in our backyard so we don't want anything fancy.
My aunt is making our cake, it was the only thing she wanted to do! She's very talented and prepared a number of samples I tried on my last trip home. I've sent her some pictures of cakes I liked from Pinterest, but I know whatever she comes up with will be amazing.

We are not planning a big wedding. Because it is our wedding and I am diabetic, I am talking to someone about making a mint devils food/ butter cake with a low sugar white icing cake for me. His cake will probably be a German Chocolate. The groom and I both enjoy mint chocolate.

What I am thinking of doing for a cake is just a small cake like (the just the top of a layer cake) Simply for the cutting ceremony (it might be able to feed 3 people). Then we will either go with a few random desserts supplied by the caterer or get what the bakery calls a slab cake. Which is just a giant cake and icing all flavours of you choice and it's a fraction of the cost of getting a huge layer cake. This way I still have a pretty little cake for pictures and cutting, and dessert for my guest.
i like the idea of dummy layers too- you get the look for less that way!
i'm not sure re a groom's cake- we don't really traditionally have cakes so i'm not sure if he would want one but i've seen some pretty cool ones! and i love the macaron idea- they could be cute around the base of each layer/a tower near the cake!

I look for cakes on www.pinterest.com & when I see one I like I pin it to my page. I will most likely get a modern style cake with fresh flowers adorning it & possibly a few floral cupcakes for decoration around the cake.
