Mine is a beautiful sapphire ring! I didn't want diamonds... I've never liked them. I can't tell you how many people have complemented me on it, and how many women have told me that they wish they would have picked their favorite gem rather than getting the traditional diamond!

I don't think it matters at all. I am a traditional girl in most things and wanted a diamond, but my ring is totally me. I do love topazes though. they can be so pretty. Who cares what other think do what you want.

Some people on here have described some very beautiful rings.

if it makes you happy nothing else matters

I don't want a diamond for my ring. I am in love with the Chocolate diamonds!! For my center stone, I love my birthstone (aquamarine).

I have a Texas Topaz from Mason County, Tx. It's cut is unique: a bathtub cut. So beautiful and totally me. He knows me well. My fiance cut the stone and designed my ring himself.

The advice given below is certainly sound- my only input is that if the stone is VERY large, it is more likely to look like costume jewelry (imo). I definitely agree that non-traditional rings are gaining popularity, and regardless, it's about whatever makes the two of you happy :) I'm sure whatever you choose will be beautiful!

Mine is a large forest green topaz with a small sapphire on each side, over a lot of filigree. Nothing costumey about it at all.

The elevator to success is out of order. You'll have to use the stairs...one step at a time.

My ring is a topaz (as I don't like diamonds). It is elegant and doesn't look like costume jewelry at all and was also quite expensive (there are apparently- my fiance informs me- a lot of kinds of topazes with different values). It is set in yellow gold (14k) and looks perfect. Everyone who has seen it loved it and said it was very me.
It is set something like this jewel, though the stone is bigger and the gold a little bit more delicately shaped to the ring:

I like these non traditional ring ideas over the traditional boring diamond. Would take one of them anyday

Made it to my maintenance weight of 125 pounds.

My fiancee's family believes that diamonds are bad luck, so we chose a pink sapphire with CZ accent stones. It is a unique ring (we custom designed it) and I love it! I wouldn't worry about people thinking it's a costume piece, if any ones asks, it's easy to tell them what it is.

Everything about you resonates happiness, now I won't settle for less.
Give me all the peace and joy in your mind.

My ring doesn't even have diamonds. It's just a mix of regular and rose gold intertwined to make a crown. I love it and get compliments on it often. It isn't a traditional ring by any means yet it is perfect for me. In summary, it's not about the kind of jewel (or lack thereof) it's how it fits the bride to bes personality and makes her happy. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. emoticon

My fiance proposed to me with a BEAUTIFUL ruby. Older family members tend to comment that "no one will know it's an engagement ring" and such... but everyone I show it to loves it. I think it's very socially acceptable in today's world to have a different sort of stone. My only advice is to stick with sapphires/rubies... most stones lower than those on the Moh's scale are not very durable. A yellow topaz does sound beautiful, though.

Alot of Brides aren't using diamonds for their rings. Adam proposed to me with a white sapphire and Alexandrite ring that I'm going to pair with a steel ring for my wedding band. In all honesty if someone says something about it just :phphphph to them. Childish I know, but it's not their choice. I'm sure a yellow topaz would be beautiful.

I have to echo other people - who cares what anyone else thinks about it! Do what makes YOU happy, you're the one who has to wear it every day!

Saying this from experience - my engagement ring main stone is an aquamarine and while I can tell many people's reactions are "Oh...you didn't want a diamond?", it's exactly what I wanted and I'm so happy to wear it every day.

If you like it, that's all that matters. Who cares if someone thinks it looks like costume jewelry?? No one's going to tell you that they think it looks like costume jewelry. Even if someone said something, you can't return it and why would you if you like it. I think a lot of people will think it's unique.

Not to be rude, but does it really matter what other people think? If your fiance knows what you want, and YOU know what you want...thats all that should matter. :)

When you think you cant, push yourself an extra 5 minutes

All that matters is what will make you and your groom happy. Get the right shade of yellow and some will think you have a canary diamond.

I would really love a pear shaped topaz (yellow/orange) ring over a diamond. Do you think people will think of it as costume jewelry since it won't be a diamond?
