We haven't sent a date yet - just got engaged, but we plan on getting married in September, hopefully! Short engagement, but we're ready to start our lives!

When we get there, we'll have been engaged for 3 1/2 years. A long time yes, but I think it's what worked for us.

I suppose the thing about long engagement vs. short engagement is many of us who have been engaged have only been engaged once and only have one side of the experience, so, well, we probably uplift our experience over what we don't know! :)

Started dating on September 4, 2004.
Engaged New Year's Eve 2009.
Getting married August 4, 2012.

LONG engagement, but we've been together for so long that it seems like nothing. We'd love to get married sooner, but school is coming first. Going to Argentina for 5 months for school, he'll be going to Ireland and then London for school and co-op, then I'll be going to France for studying. Hopefully working through grad school afterwards!

I've never been one who understood being engaged much longer than a year. I had a friend who was engaged when I met her in 2005. She had been engaged since 2004. They didn't get married until December, 2009. The longer the engagement went, the more everyone, her included, wondered what they were waiting for. Got kinda awkward. I haven't seen her in a while as she moved to another state so I can only hope she's still happy.

Of course, that's one person's experience.

We're getting married in July and that will give us an 11 month engagement. I started right away and had no problems with any planning or booking anything. If you live in a really big city, it may be more difficult.

Happy to take time sorting out the wedding, and it had to be a summer wedding, so 2010 was out. Just too soon to organise it properly.

that's a long engagement but we have to put a lot of work into planning and paying for the wedding ourselves, and it's an interfaith wedding which involves more planning!

After looking for a year or so online, I met my Fiancé on Plentyoffish.com. We met face to face February 2009 and went on our first date. We knew it was love at first sight. He proposed to me 2 months after we started dating and we've been together now for 11 months. Our wedding day is December 10, 2010 and we couldn't be happier!!

We will have been engaged for 10 months when we get married in August 2010. But we have been dating for 3 years, living together for 1.5 and are definitely ready.

As a friend joked "just long enough to prove you didn't get engaged because you were pregnant"

Me and my fiancee will only have been engaged for a year when we get married in June 2010. But we also have to get married in the summer because he will be teaching and since he has the summers off it allows us the best time for a wedding and honeymoon without.

We've been engaged for 2 years now. Originally we had planned to get married this summer (so after 2½ year) but due to me being unemployed for some time last year we've had to reschedule. The date is now set for next summer (3 years 7 months)and we are in full planning mode.

We were initially going to be engaged for about 18 months before getting married, but certain circumstances have shifted so the wedding has been pushed back from Sep 2010 to Sep 2011. But we have also chucked a lot of our original plans in favor of a fabulous honeymoon in Europe in lieu of a more elaborate ceremony. Who knows... maybe that will change over the next year too! The one thing we know for sure is that we love each other and we are getting married. We want the occasion to be special so we want to wait until we can afford to celebrate it the way WE want to.

Everyone is different and there is no right or wrong answer here. I am an obsessive compulsive planner, so having enough time to work out the details was never an issue for me. I think it all depends on your schedule, the type of wedding you want, and how much help you are going to have to make it all happen.

Congrats!

As short or as long as you like!

We have been engaged for almost 3 years, dating for going on 7. We set a date that was a year and a half out when we initially got engaged but he broke his leg a few months before so we had to re-schedule.

The long engagement worked out perfect for us; we have thrown out many plans that we didn't like but were told we "had" to do, come up with cost saving alternatives to many things, and have become very relaxed about everything.

Best of wishes!

Kalymi

We picked our date within about 3 weeks of getting engaged. But I know couples who got engaged and waited a year and a half to set a date. There is no right or wrong way to do it. Each couple is different. Set a date when the two of you feel comfortable.

We dated for 10 years and will have been engaged for 17 months when we get married.

We were friends 2 years, dated 2.5 years, and will have been engaged 7 months when we get married. We were able to get our ideal location on our ideal date.

We were going to wait over a year to get married, but my brother is terminally ill so we moved the date up. Because of that and because we didn't have a chance to save up money for the wedding, my mom offered to take out a loan to pay for most of it.

We've been dating for 4yrs in March. Just got engaged and we're planning our wedding for Spring of 2011. We've decided to wait a little longer to save $$ and plan.

At first we were going to get married Oct. 2010 but we just ran into some stressful finance problem. Such as our home being broke into and having to choose another ring for my engagement ring. My original ring was beautiful but we went to 5 different jewellery stores and they all refused to re size my ring :( Reason being they would have to go from a size 7 to a size 41/2 and the diamonds could fall out and be very high maintenance to keep up with. On a good note... Chandler and I picked out a ring together that we both really like and is unique. emoticon

We are trying to nail a date down this week! We've been dating for 2.5 years, just got engaged, and are thinking either August 2010 or April 2011. April 2011 seems so far away though...I agree with the poster who said the longer you have to plan, the more confusing it can be. Maybe I can get everyone to go for December 2010 as a compromise. emoticon

I will be engaged just over 5 months before the wedding. We dated for 1 year and were friends for 3 years before that. We did not start dating until we knew that there was a possibility for marriage. I feel like I have had plenty of time to plan my wedding. I had no trouble getting the church and reception site and all of our bridesmaids and groomsmen were able to plan to be there, even if they live out of town.

I dated my fiance for 3.5 years before we got engaged.

We picked the date (literally) the next day... and will have been engaged for 1 year exactly when we get married.

We needed a year because of something that is being made for our reception. You can plan a wedding in 3-6 months if you really want to. The dress is the thing that would worry me about trying to plan it that quickly, they take a while to come in and then several alterations to make it perfect.

Planning on holding off until Novemeber 2011 (11.11.11 - to be exact), which will put us at 2 years. Perfectly fine with because I want to be able to pay for a nice wedding ourselves. Also, he might be deploying sometime next year. He wants to push it to next year, but I would hate for us to get married and then spend our first year apart. Engagements can be anywhere from 9 days (Khloe Kardashian haha) or years. All depends on the couple. Best wishes!

To be honest i dont mind how long before the wedding takes place and were actually engaged as it means a chance to plan the perfect wedding and pay everything off without the worry of getting into debt over it x

Do as little as you can and see the change

Everyone is different. It often depends on age, whether you are finishing school and honestly, the big one is money. I've been with my fiance' for almost 6 years, been engaged for four. We're getting married next year. Just don't rush, don't feel the need to live up to anyone's standard but your own and do what you two feel comfortable doing.

Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as
effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing
bubblegum. - Baz Luhrmann

I had been dating my FI for 7 years before we got engaged, so I'm not really interested in a long engagement. I'm hoping we can get married in September or October, which would be about a year-long engagement.

Our wedding is 16 April 2011 and we got engaged 28 December 2008, so effectively a 2 1/2 year engagement. We wanted to wait a while considering we are working overseas now and the time will give us a chance to save up enough money (nothing worse than starting married life off in debt!) AND enjoy our time together as an engaged couple.

Fortunately it has also given me the freedom to plan things ahead of time and not go crazy with lack of time - so far we have my dress, chapel, reception venue, cake artist, DJ and caterer sorted. its a great feeling being so organised and with time up my sleeve :)

I think that a lot of people get so stressed during the wedding planning stage and forget to enjoy the day/moment/time for what it is...the start of a new journey together.

I don't think the length of time you are engaged matters much, so long as it suits the two of you. If you are having a destination wedding, it might be nice to give your guests sometime to arrange finances/time off work, but if you are having a simple wedding then you can be more flexible.

We were engaged November 3, 2006 and we're getting married July 31, 2010, so 3 1/2 year engagement. It's nice though, we were only dating 9 months when we got engaged, and we currently have a 16 month old :)

My fiance and I dated over two years, were engaged on May 7, 2009 and will be married May 29, 2010. I think a year was the perfect length of time for us because we've had time to same money and plan everything just the way we want it.

Take however long you want to. It's YOUR big day emoticon

Happy Planning!

On the day of our wedding, we will have been engaged for 3 years, 1 month and a week. Why the long engagement? We'll never use the term "my fiancé" again, so why not?

I have to finish up my bachelor's degree while my fiance starts seminary (I'll be in TX, he'll be in MO), so we won't get married until december 2010. We got engaged in august 09. My mom gave my fiance her permission as long as he lets me finish my undergrad first.

Me and my boyfriend (no engagement) decided we were going to get married...............in April 2010 (at the time it left us 6 months to prepare)! We went to see the vicar in October and already the church and reception are booked and everything is falling into place.

You can do anything as long as you put your mind to it so its really whatever length of time you feel comfortable with. :)

My partner and I have been engaged since 09/09/09 and have picked 11/11/11 for the big day! We have been together 7 years. I think you should get married when ever you want to. My parents arranged their wedding in 6 weeks! Do what ever feels right for you.

It is personal preference. My finace and I will be engaged for a year and a half when we get married. He proposed in February and we wanted a summer wedding. However, money didn't allow us to get married this last summer. There is no right or wrong. It is whatever works for you.

It really depends on you. If you have a long engagement, you'll have more time to plan. I've found that having a long engagement and having time to look at way too many wedding ideas, the simpler plans have become. It's also given us time to find good deals and figure out what we really want.

A short engagement is fine. Depending on where you live, it might be more difficult to find venues or vendors available, but then you just have to be more creative.

The length of my engagement is really due to my decision to be in school and that neither of us really wants to do a long distance marriage. At the same time we do talk about just going down to the courthouse, but I want our moms to be there and I'd like a party. If we could convince his family just to travel for a party, I'd do the courthouse.

My fiance and I got engaged in March '09 and are getting married Aug. '10. We're getting married on the Jersey shore and wanted to pick a good beach day. We also wanted to have enough time to save some money and be able to go on a honeymoon.

You can be engaged for as long, or as short of a period as you want.

If you are engaged for a short period of time. Then you can really bargain with the vendors.

One Hotel and Reception vendor said "If you plan your wedding a year or two in advance and book your venue at that time. There is really no room for negotiation. If your wedding is coming up in a couple of months. If we have that slot open, we want to fill it. And will negotiate with the couple on costs."

The downside would be that your favorite vendor is already booked on that day.

Well Me and My Fiance put our wedding Date two years out, So we have more than enough time to plan and organize and come up with the money. I all so want to take that time to lose weight and get to my goal weight and look great in my wedding dress. So putting it out to 6/25/2011 is working great for us. I assume setting your date really depends on the couple and how well prepared you are and how quickly you are want to get married :) !!!!!!!!

It really depends on how organized you are, how quickly you are able to get everything done, where you will be having the wedding reception and what time of year. Some places book up way way early especially on special days. EX 10/10/10 has been a big one for this coming year. Lots of places have been booked up more than a year in advance. If you and your fiancee are not that set on a date it should be much easier to plan a wedding in less than a year if that is what you want. It all depends on you two. Good Luck

I think it totally depends on you and your fiance about picking the date. If you are already engaged then you both know you will get married. I'd suggest you start looking at dates now so you'll know how to fit that in around your schedule or something. The length of wedding planning just depends on you and the details you want to incorporate in it and most of all finances.

Well, good luck to you! You'll be fine...
