You can double-click the map marker you placed to remove it. If that doesn't work for you, you might want to try using a different browser. I will pass along your suggestion about sorting the map routes!
I use the mapping feature all the time on sparkpeople and I have two main comments. One is that for some reason the undo button seems to have disappeared for me. This means that if I make a mistake, like trying to hit the arrow button to move the map around and slightly missing it making that a point on my walk/ride, I can't undo it and have to start over again.
The other comment, is I wonder if the maps could be listed in order of number of times tracked rather than the order at which I put them into the database. I have two screen fulls of maps, and it takes too long to find the one I want, especially when that is the one that I have been using once a week for the past three months. I have a standard 3.1 mile route that I use a lot and finding it when the maps are listed via which I created first takes awhile.
3/31/12 Trailbreaker half marathon 13.1 miles in 3 hours 13 minutes 4/20/13 Neighborhood Watch 5K 39:17.6 10/5/13 5K Grace Pet Fest 38:47.6 12/1/13 Secret City Half Marathon around 3 hours and 4 minutes 4/19/14 Butterflies for Hope 5K for Lupus 39:23.8 (I hurt my back a few days before, and though it was my first official 5K with some jogging, my back hurt, so was very slow.)
