Now that is interesting. I'm Canadian and I'm with Rogers email which is powered by Yahoo. However, I have only had the problem on SP.

I'm curious - where is everyone from?
I'm thinking more and more this is only affecting Canadian users but I could be way off base.
Apparently Yahoo has reported similar issues - as I've been told by SP tech support. Is anyone else on this thread a Yahoo user?

Yes, there are other ways to support SP, buying their books and DVD's, online merchandise (not so easy for those of us outside the US) and SparkCoach (which sadly I've found is no benefit to me), but by far the biggest and simplest revenue resource is probably the website advertising. It boggles my mind the potential. See www.cxotoday.com/story/google-facebook-hig

I don't want to get into a debate about it all.

Even though I don't see any ads, like you said it's just one way to keep this site free.

There are other ways to support SparkPeople besides clicking on ads.

I don't know about rude, I certainly don't feel like I have been nor have I seen any rude ones. I have recently seen some comments about some members wondering if SP really pays attention to this forum and if they care about some of the problems with the ads.

As to supposedly members leaving, they are. I've been a member of SP since Jan. 2008 and the membership has dropped just about every year from over 220,000 when I first started to at the end of Dec. 2013, 86,345, an all-time low.

There may be a sense of frustration setting in. Since you haven't had to deal with the red screen pop-ups you might not understand.

I don't see this forum as a "complaint" board, but one where we come to ask for help when we're having problems and this red screen pop-up is by far the worst that I have seen.

As I previously mentioned, I feel I should see the ads that help keep SP free and don't mind going into some of them if I find them interesting. AdBlocker defeats a way of keep SP free.

Ads are a reality of internet life and I think everyone pretty much realizes it, but they don't have to be invasive - in-your-face pop-ups or sound ones. Of all the sites that I've visited, SP without a doubt has the most, but then again I haven't been on every site.

I think most members would be accepting of a happy-medium!

BTW, my Norton Security is continually running and scans everyday.

CHERYLHAMMER - You are correct in that it seems like most are taking it personally.

We all need to take responsibility for making sure we protect our computer(s) and educate ourselves as much as possible. I know it isn't always easy though.

I'm surprised that I haven't heard anyone say they checked with their virus protection service (McAfee, Norton, etc.) to seek help also. Or ask questions on those message boards.

I doubt those that choose to leave will find a free site with similar tools that doesn't have the same problems at some point

I can see some people getting pee'd off and venting their frustrations. I will look into your suggestion to block the ads because they really haven't advertised anything that interests me. However in the mean time (while I help report my findings to SP) it is annoying when you are minding your own business, logging your food or exercise and your screen gets taken over by an ad to buy sex toys. Offensive or what? And then you have to start all over again doing what you were doing IF you even log back on.
I agree however that people are kind of taking this as a personal attack and jumping ship too quickly.
It's the internet people - these things happen because there are some real winners out there who have nothing better to do with their time. Just hang in there - it will be resolved eventually

Like I said I see no ads so it's sad that people are supposedly leaving SparkPeople.

I do understand posting complaints but some members have been going way to far and that isn't being helpful.

Some posts have been downright rude.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm very careful where I go on the internet and I'm only having this problem on SP. As well, many others are having the same problem as I see now from other posts on this board.

Most of the ads on SP don't bother me, only the invasive ones. Ads help keep this site free and I feel that by continuing to see them I'm supporting SP, but if the problems continue I just may have to consider AdBlockerPlus.

The sad thing is that members are leaving because of the ads and I wish SP would look at a balance.

Thanks again!

Download the Ad Blocker called Ad Block Plus. It's free.
www.adblockplus.org

You can download Ad Block Plus for Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, Opera or Android browsers.

I see no ads.

************************************* Also

A lot of times you can get malicious malware from other websites that follow you around so it might not be from here on SparkPeople.

In Mozilla Firefox: Go to Tools / Add-ons.
If there is anything there that you didn't add on click on Disable.

See if that helps.

I'm sure Internet Explorer has a similar option.

If this message board and the responses to my latest blog are any indication, we are all having these problems in varying degrees. I am leaving the site if it doesn't improve and I will never recommend this site to anyone until the ad/popup situation is fixed. Surely SP know about our complaints and worries about malware and viruses. They should look into this before we all leave.

It's happening right now when I post on this board and when I'm posting on People In Ontario. Ads showing are Adtech, Green Giant, Walmart. What a pain! Right now it's continual.

For these red screen ones, I finally figured out that by using the back arrow at the top of the page next to the address bar that I could get rid of it. Often though as soon as I try to post, it comes back again. One evening while in the Games Forum the red screen ads came up over ten times, I got so fed up I just left SP.

It appears you don't even have to click an ad for it to happen - just whatever ad is running on the page. Just a red screen of death basically asking to update Java, update Flash Player or the page were on is reported unsafe.
I have run several scanners and have been on SP all day and so far have been without further issue.

I see from other posts other SP members are having the same problems. It just happened to me twice again. On my blog summary page - two ads one for Canada E-post and one for ticketliquidator.com. The other was on the Message Boards - Introduce Yourself and both the above mentioned ads appeared as well as a Sears one. Sorry, but I don't know how to do a screen shot.

Hi,

The message you are reporting sounds like it could be related to an ad you are seeing on the page. SInce not everyone sees the same ads, you can report that to adreport@sparkpeople.com with all the information and a screenshot of the ad, if possible.

While viewing a post on the Losing and Playing SparkTeam, this message came up on a red background inside a white box with a red shield with an X in the corner:

"This website has been reported as unsafe

Recommended icon Go to my home page instead

This website has been reported to contain the following threats:
•Malicious software threat: This site contains links to viruses or other software programs that can reveal personal information stored or typed on your computer to malicious persons.

(Underneath the box on the right side it says Microsoft SmartScreen)

As well, while naviagating SP, I'm also getting frequent red screen pop-ups about needing to install Flashplayer and Java updates to view the pages. I have Windows 8.1 and am up-to-date.

Are these part of the irritating pop-up ads that just about everyone is complaining about???
