Basically, what it comes down to is the cost of maintaining the app. Yes, ads support the site itself, but they can't keep the app itself updated and maintained the way it needs to be. The site itself is and always will remain free, but staff has explained that in order to maintain their excellent service on the app, they needed to start charging for the new version.
