Been quite a few months since I wrote in my journal and looking at the last entry, things haven't changed much. This is a bit discouraging. I would rather check in here after 5 months and see that I had lost a ton of weight and was sticking with my plans to get and stay healthy.
Well looking back doesn't help and looking forward isn't the answer. Just staying right here in this moment is all I can control.

Why I want to stay on track --- to feel comfortable in my clothes - to look good in my clothes - to be able to buy clothes in the regular sizes - heck, to feel comfortable in my own skin.

Day 3 of keeping on track. Yesterday was a bit difficult, but today is going well. I can't seem to get motivated to move my body, but I am sure that will happen in another day or 2.

Yesterday I had another really good day. Added more fruit into the diet and took the dogs for a walk to our old house, where my son lives, and that was really fun. The dogs got to climb trees and we got to eat fruit off the plum tree.

Focusing on losing my belly fat has been really helpful for me when stopping cravings. I have talked myself down from at least 3 cravings this week by just talking to myself about wanting to lose my belly fat. I have to remind myself all day long that this is my primary goal right now, which it is, and that if I don't go on my daily walk, or if I get off track, it will take me that much longer to lose this tummy.

My baby step today is to just keep thinking about losing my belly fat. So that means that whenever I want to eat something that is not too healthy, remind myself how is this helping me reduce my belly fat? At the same time when I am exercising, or even just doing housework, I want to be mindful of how I am helping myself reduce my belly fat. This is a huge priority for me because I know that caring around belly fat raises my chances for high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. And on the other hand the medications that I take have a tendancy to cause belly fat, so I have a bit of a challenge to work on this area.

Finally feeling like I am getting back into my groove. It is sure difficult to move those muscles when you stay away from working out too long. Gosh I wish I could just say, it will never happen again. But right now I am still in the phase of I hope it never happens again.

Lost 2 pounds this week, but more importantly I jogged 20 minutes nonstop. That was the most exhilarating feeling ever as far as exercise goes.

feeling really tired out today. I will take a break from any work outs today and just do a short walk. Yesterday I went over my calories by about 300 calories and it is the first time I can ever remember just knowing that the calories I ate were all healthy. I had a lot of fruit and nuts and a broiled steak that was high in calories, but nothing that was what I would call bad calories. Since I have done a short amount of jogging when I am walking I felt that maybe my body was also asking to have a few extra calories.
Anyway, for me this felt like a huge win. Going over calorie allotment, charting it, and not feeling guilty, but really feeling it was a healthy choice. emoticon

Motivated to stay on course and hit my target. I know I have been here before and I want to figure out how to keep my motivation this high. I want to remember the work that I am doing to get to my final weight loss goal. Not sure how to do this except write about it and go back and read my journal every once in awhile.

Beginning of week 3. I have done really well at staying with my plan. Even after a whole weekend of being with the family and a party at my house, I feel like I am still in control of my eating and exercising. I realize that this is going to be a day by day, hour by hour and moment by moment journey of positive choices.

I had a great breakthrough today. I love to go on walks with my dogs and my honey. But I have only walked the dogs one time by myself. They are both pretty high energy and I never felt confidant enough to walk them by myself. I have a fear of meeting aggressive, unleashed dogs and not being able to control my dogs.
Well tonight I walked the dogs on my own because it was either go alone or not at all. And an unleashed dog attached my dogs. He full fledge right on attached with bearing his teeth and aggressing on my dogs. Thankfully the owner was near and was able to get her dog in control. I just continued my planned walk and was able to control the dogs the whole time. It was an awesome feeling to be independent and feel in control of myself and the dogs.

Joann, I so understand. My word the last 2 years was action. Meaning instead of talking/thinking/planning, actually acting on my dreams.

I don't know if you are much of a sports fan, I'm not really but I have been exploring Michael Jordan quotes this week. I really like this one:

Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen. ~ Michael Jordan

spot on. how do I make it happen for me, is my question for me, so I am interested in the learning process & explore various ideas. I think it's ok... we can keep what works, leave the rest, eh?

1 last quick thing to share with you. Yesterday, read an article from Coach Dean that I found conceptually helpful too for learning and converting our thoughts/desires into meaningful to us action.

emoticonexcerpt on learning
Some of this will be “book" learning—the facts, figures and concepts, such as those that you've read on SparkPeople. But the most important learning you need to do involves learning from your own experience. This takes a whole different set of skills than those involved in absorbing what other people can tell you.

The ancient Greeks had a word for this other form of learning: praxis. Praxis is a four-stage process of:

1) Observing your own actions and their effects
2) Analyzing what you observe
3) Strategizing an action plan
4) Taking action

www.sparkpeople.com/resource/wellness_arti
cles.asp?id=699

emoticonultimately, it comes down to what we do in the moment, push comes to shove. do we sit & wish or do we learn to act, improve, grow... through the process...

do you remember when we met? You made reference to michaelangelo carving away the excess to my cameo metaphor that I was creating myself? I am glad we are both still here, working on this, together :)

Thanks Jules for the link to your journal. I can't get over how many people really have this addiction to carbs - or what we call junk food and turn to it for solace when we are having down days. Or we turn to it for happy celebrations. I can just look at a cupcake and it make me feel happy. Isn't that pathetic?

Anyway, on the momentt by moment way of living, I suppose nothing is really pathetic, stupid, bad, etc. It just is. And developing new coping skills would be the wisest way to deal with emotions. I can always say I am "trying" this or that, but trying isn't quite enough. It is that moment of getting past trying and moving into committment that one really knows he is winning the battle. Once again it is just a moment by moment decision of choices.

Today I finally feel like my metabolism is starting to kick butt. I had a great exercise day and feel much stronger than the beginning of the week. It is great to feel like I am on the snowball effect once again. My body is beginning to feel slimmer.

I was checking my recents post list, and went to check a thread just below yours. I am using my phone, and accidentally touched this thread instead. I realized I was already up to date, when I felt this urge to scroll down and check out what we've chatted about, when I decided to re-read my replies to you about being exactly where you are meant to be, etc., and started to laugh. Here, the advice I was giving was just what I needed to hear. So, perhaps touching your thread link, instead of the one I thought I intended was meant to be after all.

Today I have a mini goal to reach the total number of points in both the exercise column and the cardio. Since it is Sunday and I cleaned house yesterday, I have plenty of time to get this accomplished. I slept 10 hours last night and am feeling full of energy.

Sometimes I get discouraged when I don't see the scale move downward, even when I see my measurements getting smaller. I would like to say it doesn't matter, but that isn't true for me. I would like to think about the number on the scale as having little or no importance and to look to the health benefits of eating good food and exercising regularly. I wish I could brainwash some of these old ideas right out of my head.

Choices, choices, all about choices. I choose to change my thinking about the # on the scale. It is only one small indication of how well I am doing.

We spent over 5 hours yesterday shoveling and moving unknown amounts of gravel in our yard. I am not sure how to count this as calories burned, but I know I burned a lot. That is the hardest work I have done in my life. (heaviest work).
Today I have more hours of work planned, so I should be burning even more calories. Hope I am able to move my body on Monday.

Moment by moment is how I live my life. I make long term goals and then break these goals up into shorter steps. I know that this works for everything in life. And I know it works for getting in shape, eating healthy and losing weight.

Today I had a wonderful epiphany. Once I really feel that I have this part of my life in control, it frees me up to stepping into other long range goals that I have dared to only dream of up until now. It is time for me to start planning on working on these dreams. It is time for me to step into my greatness.

Today I took the day to just enjoy myself and rest from the past week and revitalize. I am not sure if it is my age or physical condition or the combination, but it seems like I need one day a week to do almost nothing. By that I mean no exercise, no work, no housework, no traveling, no grocery shopping, no cooking, I mean NOTHING except relax, read, maybe go for a short walk with the dogs, and commune with nature. If I don't get this one day in during the week I find that I don't have enough energy to make it through my next week of activities.

The one thing that I have never wanted to do is to make a general rule about my life, like because I am on constant chemotherapy I have to be X y Z.. For the most part I think because I have never used excuses to be different, I have always been able to keep myself working full time and also living a full life. However maybe now at age 59 and moving closer to 60, maybe, just maybe I am getting a little bit more worn out at the end of the week.

I don't want to make excuses or become a victim of negative thinking, and yet I think I might just need to accept this one limitation as a fact of aging. When I ask my doctor about it he always laughs and says, Joann, maybe it is because you are getting older?

Interesting... I was concerned because I was taking vitamin d all year, that it may not help me this winter, because my body has adjusted to it? Don't know if that's a worthy concern or not... but funny that you mentioned it, and I was thinking about it!

Summer was pretty much non-existant here too! Although, I am looking forward to this winter and busting my last 20 lbs! Anywho... your journal... just catching up!

Hugz!

Fall is all around us even though we hardly had any summer this year. I always get a kind of melancholy feeling when the days get shorter and the weather gets colder. I have been taking Vitamin d for most of this year so I am anxious to see if maybe this winter I will not suffer from the winter Blues.

Wow, I was just looking back over a few of my journal postings and I can't help but think -- what a shame that I have wasted so much time getting myself back on track. But that is negative thinking and I refuse to go down the beat myself up road. What is important is that I am here now and I am finishing day 2 of getting myself healthier and happier.
I will remember that life is lived moment by moment and it is the choices I make during each moment that will add up to the goals I want to achieve. Woo hoo me.emoticon

I have spent the last 2 days with my Dad in the hospital. He is so scared and in pain and there is nothing I can do but be there to keep him company and help him with the physical things he can't do. But when a body is sick there is just a point at which it will heal itself or it won't. Driving home tonight I thought of what it might be like to have no parents alive. I know it is inevitable and yet I somehow always thought I would die before them, so I have never really just sat and thought about me being in the world without them.

Today I have been looking back at posts, trying to catch up a little on where everybody is since I have been out of touch. Then I just realized, it doesn't really matter where anybody was yesterday, or where they will be tomorrow. So I just stopped and exercised and sat with me for a moment to be quiet. It feels so good to be in control of this emotional eating - why does it feel good? I guess I feel like I have more motivation and hope and look forward to building on my good work. It feels much better to be heading in a direction that I want to end up than it does to be driving down a road to a dead end. And yes, that is pun intended.

Your daugher is VERY lucky to have you for a mom! Perhaps the following quote will resonate with her, as it just did for me recently!

"Difficulties are opportunities for growth. If you try to avoid all trials, you are simply arresting your development!" ~God is in the Small Stuff

And, they also quote the bible, and not trying to be a preacher... lol... but,

"Dear brothers and sisters, whenever trouble comes your way, let it be an oppurtunity for joy. For when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow."
James 1:2-3

Also, I was a single mom at the age of 22, trying to get my life together and going to College as well! It wasn't easy either! Looking back, I am so grateful! That oppurtunity allowed me to become employed in a town where I met my husband! I could really make this a long story, but won't! Just let her know, as you already have, that I have been there, we all have been there, and it's upon reflection that we can truly see what God's and the angels intentions were and are for us, if we are willing to see the good in things!

Tell her, even though I am some complete stranger, that I am praying for her, and wish her the best of peace, contentment, and happiness!

Hugz!

That is such a great attitude! I was just talking to my daughter who is going through a really tough time trying to get moving in the right direction: single mom, 22, just quit working full time to go to school and her car broke down right before the semester so she has to take 3 busses to get there and depend on others to get her and her son around. She was crying and saying "Why does everything keep happening to me; it seems like since I started getting my life together, it has started to fall apart". I know it sounds cliche but I told there is a reason for everything and that these things happen to make us stronger, show us our way and to test our abilities and strength. I said you will look back on this 1st semester and revel in the fact that you made it through all these obstacles and had such perserverance that you never knew you had. And I told her you will be amazed at what you accomplished.

It will be the same for you; JustDucky is absolutely right, you have been put right where you are for a reason and when the time comes to move on it will be right and it will probably fall right into your lap.

You will perservere and find your place of true happiness.

I am a huge Doreen Virtue believer! I have her angel cards, and were my first step in leading a more spiritual based life! I have learnt so much, and truly believe that I am intune with my angels!

I just happened upon a team that uses her as a basis of their team, among other things, and this post was posted today! I went to check it out AFTER reading and posting my reply to your revelation!

I strongly suggest you read it, and you will soon see that your revelation is already manifesting into form! Your angels have heard you, and your prayers are being answered Joann!!!

Love your revelation! And I can agree, that my feelings would be right where yours are if I were in that position! I recognized a long time ago that I do not have the personality that it takes to push things upon other people! Must be a Capricorn thing...
emoticon

However, take peace in knowing that right now, this is where you are meant to be! By thinking differently today, and perhaps beginning the processes to find another more fulfilling job, you will be well on your way to a content happiness with what you do!

Remember that you cannot seek happiness! It is in the doing and being that get us there, while living in the NOW!

You can make the most of your present situation if you can learn to accept that today, this is what it is!

I know you know all this!!!

I actually have an example!

Whenever giving a quick recap of my life, via here or facebook for examples, I use to say the following: (I just went to facebook and grabbed it, haven't updated it in a while)

I love being a SAHM for now, and feel very priviledged that I am able to. Now if I could just figure out some way to do what I love, and get paid to do it... lol

Well guess what... I just had the realization the other day, honestly, just the other day, that I am doing what I love and I am getting paid to do it! For nearly 2 years now... lol! When Scott and I started our own company, I took on the responsibility of bookkeeper, finance manager, rock when he needs one, decision maker - along with him, and on and on! This allows me to stay at home, make my kids a priority, and I am getting paid to do it!!!

Now, I am happy that I ain't the person gutting fish for a living, not my forte, but may be theres! You will find your niche! I don't have a doubt in my mind!

And just as I know now, and accept, that I won't always be a SAHM doing books for our company, you won't always being in your current job either! Because, one day, our company is going to be big enough, that it needs me out there doing it to, whether in the field, or in our new office, even if I am the receptionist/dispatcher and we hire an accountant to take over the books!

Today is the steps that need to be taken in order to get to my future now!

Hugz!

Moment by Moment

Today I had a huge revelation at work. I go to a job everyday that I really don't care for. I love the people at work, I love my clients, but I don't care for selling, especially when I feel like I am pushing something on people who can't afford it, or don't want it. I don't like feeling pressured that I have to do this to keep my job. And I wonder how much all of this affects my weight and my self esteem? I am working on coming up with a new game plan that will either help me to enjoy my job more, or help me look for other employment.

I would love to get up in the morning feeling the joy of going to a job I love. It has been many years since I felt this way and it feels like life is too short to not have that passion back in my life.

Thanks, Kendra, the moments have been getting easier these past few days. I am on Day 12 of the challenge and I can feel the snowball growing. I can do this and will remember that food is for fuel. Let go of the emotional baggage and be kind to me.

Great entry... MOMENY BY MOMENT - Aug 14th 2009!

I too have been working on not making excuses anymore! For myself, or others! I have also gotten very honest with myself and others, which I believe is one reason I am doing so well today! Keep on keeping on Joann!

Jan 3, 2010

I am starting the 100 day challenge over since my break was a lot longer than a few days. I am now on day 3, and I am so happy with myself for coming back to Spark to help keep me motivated.

Life is just lived moment by moment and that is the only way I know how to keep my healthy living style under control. When I do the future tripping, I tend to get my snowball rolling and then when I encounter some really tough emotional wall, I have a difficult time keeping up my momentum. Without doing a bunch of self reflecting, I want to prepare myself to get over, through, or around these emotional barriers. I think this will be the answer to keeping me in a forward motion.
I want to remember:
1. no negative self talk
2. give myself credit for all the good things I have accomplished
3. love myself
4. put me as number 1 priority in my life.

Day 35 of the 100 days of weight loss Challenge.

I am practicing eating till full, and then stopping and evaluating how I feel. I know that I physically am full, but emotionally I am still hungry. I feel my body saying, I want chocolate. And I know that is just a craving. I am waiting for this craving to pass. I am going to go out and take a small walk in the sunshine and when I come back in, I will sit and have a cup of tea.

Here I am on Day 22 and sticking with my plan. I feel so motivated and strong, like something this time is totally different. It feels so good to feel powerful over my food intake and not a slave to the binging cycle. Thank goodness for Linda Spangle and the 100 day Challenge and my Spark friends. Day 22, I am still thinking about it, and almost in awe that I feel even more motivated today than I did on day 3.

Day 3, Do It Anyway

I will, I will, I will,... and then she started walking and walking and walking, and a small voice in the head said... you have done enough, that's enough, enough, enough, and then the little voice from the committed me said,,,,,,,FEEL YOUR BREATH, FEEL YOUR BODY MOVE, FEEL THE BURNING OF THE CALORIES, FEEL YOUR BODY GETTING HEALTHY.
And then another voice came up, one that I have heard in the past and forgotten, it was saying, HEY, YOU CAN EVEN DO MORE.. COMMIT TO MORE EXERCISE, BE STRONGER, TAKE CONTROL, THIS IS IT. YOU ARE NOT JUST INTERESTED, YOU ARE COMMITTED. And I felt so much joy rush in, even as I was panting up the hill and sweating. In fact, here is a little secret, I even enjoyed the sweating....

MOMENT BY MOMENT
Aug 14th 2009

Here I am again, back to this place that I have been so many times before. How can I make this time different? Will my committment to getting healthy, exercising, and eating healthy really stick this time around. It feels like I am motivated, but I have been here before.
Well, I can only do this moment by moment and the success will come in exactly the same way. When I meet those choice (and I know I will meet them) I plan to make a conscious choice to choose health and fitness over emotional binging and laziness. I choose to be impowered over keeping myself a victim. I choose to hit my next birthday as a healthy 59 year, not someone that is making excuses for why I haven't achieved my goals.
Excuses are sometimes the painful truth of where my life is at this moment. And excuses keep me trapped in the huffing and puffing when I try to go for a walk. The excuses keep me wearing clothes that just cover my body instead of making me feel proud of my body. Excuses keep me trapped in not wanting to go out and meet the world - and excuses could also end of being my early departure from this world.
Today I choose to give up my excuses and from this moment forward I chose to make my life and my health a priority.

I am trying to get real in my life.

So much of what we are experiencing right now is negative. I want to be positive. I want to be the force and the energy that drives change in my life in in the lives of everyone around me.
So in this effort of being real, and at the same time changing for the good I want to make only those committments that I know I can keep.
