Got a GREAT deal on a mid-level pair of Aisics... really happy with them! So no more excuses! I am outfitted and ready to roll (or run, as the case may be!).

Shortcuts... nope - there certainly aren't!

Happy New Year friends!

No doubt maintenance is hard Kelly. But your mindset is good. That sugar thing is so true. Not sure how much of it is physiology and how much is in our heads. Doesn't really matter. The effect is the same so it's something to be dealt with.

Yes, tomorrow is a new year. However, just once, I wish I didn't find myself starting over then. I need to work harder at being where I want to be, regardless of what time of year it is. Some goals are good. We can work on those.

Have a great holiday!

I think that is probably exactly right, Mar...
If the key to losing weight is 80% what you eat (or don't eat), I suspect that 80% of maintenance is fitness.

I've really lost my cardio fitness... hoping to get out tomorrow and catch the end of the boxing week sale for some new running shoes. And then it's back to it.
I DID do a little OTHER fitness testing just to see... and was pleased to find that I can do 26 sit-ups in a minute and 35 push ups ('women style').
A good starting point, I think... and I'll continue to work on it as I get back to cardio... AND getting my food under control. I think it's the sugar that has been really getting to me.
I started having just a little in my coffee, but have really started craving it more and more.

Today, I thought I'd try a sugar-free day. Made it until about 2 o'clock. I had been tempted several times and managed to "just say no". Then I decided I would have just one little piece of chocolate. BAM! Within 10 minutes, I had, like, five more things! It was crazy!

Tomorrow is the end of 2012... it's been an interesting year. And I am looking forward to the fresh start that each new year brings. I'm all for a fresh start any time... but you know what I mean.

Time to take stock once again of where I've come from and what I hope to accomplish in the year ahead. I've found that maintenance is NOT my friend. I have to have a (some) goals for moving forward... not staying in place.

Yeah, I know that 2000 calories is a zinger. It's been a while but I read an article a while back about maintenance and it said that when in maintenance, exercise becomes far more important than what you eat. Just something to keep in mind.

Hey Mar...
I know i just need to get back to basics... i do weigh in every day. However, the rest has really fallen off. I know from experience how easy it is to go WAY over on cals with a couple bad choices. I also know that somehow i have become sedentary again... cant even BELIEVE I let that happen. I have just allowed the demands of my kidsĹ schedules (and the lack of daylight) keep me from prioritizing my fitness time.
2000 cals/wk?!?!? I was only doing that at the very peak of my fitness regime. I would be happy with half of that right now!
Thanks so much for being there for me and for the suggestions. I really appreciate it my friend! I will get back on track.... definitely.

Hi Mary, I am already doing all of the listed items just two new ones that is advancing on my gardening skills, and my family and I spent all last spring and summer hiking so our next step is to actually get out on the trail but we will be breaking it up into many sections, really looking forward to it; right now we're just looking for a guide for our first few outings on the Appalachian trail.

EMMELINEE. those are some big goals. I hope you can do it. For me, that would certainly be a set up for failure. I have too much on my plate. My goals for now are much smaller.

Kelly, do you read the community highlight emails? The one today was about a woman in maintenance and what she's facing. If you don't get those, I can send you the link to her post. But she listed a few things that she makes sure she does that I thought were really good:

-Tracking food daily
- Burning a minimum of 2000 calories per week in exercise
- Weighing daily
- Keeping eating out to a minimum

2000 calories a week is a lot but doable, depending on how much time you have. When I was biking, I was close to 4000 a week. Just walking, I'm at about 1000. Mainly she talked about how relaxing wasn't on that list. She is staying hyper-vigilant. Doesn't really sound like what we want to do once the weight is off but it really is the way it is. I know all too well how easily those pounds can creep back.

I know how strong you are Kelly. You have overcome an awful lot to get where you are and you need to keep that in mind as you go forward. A few pounds right now is not tragic while you're trying to figure it out. And you will figure it out. You inspire me every day and I have faith in you. Please let me know how you're doing.

Love ya! Mary

Reality check. One month into "maintenance" and I am up 6 pounds, putting me above my "RED LINE".
Crap.
I have GOT to get a handle on this thing. Ought to be interesting over Christmas!

Sounds like fun Kel! I'm trying to get motivated to get my tree up. Had kind of a bad night last night. I think I'm just a bit stressed about getting back to work. One thing at a time!

Hope the rest of your weekend is great!

Just want to say that the TRX girl that keeps popping up in an add here is taunting me. What a body! And there I go, comparing myself to a professional athlete! Ha! Get real, Kel... seriously.
Let us set some reasonable goals and expectations for ourselves for the year ahead, shall we?

All that aside, we had a VERY productive day yesterday. Got the tree set up on Friday night and then had a family mission to get the house clean and complete the decos yesterday morning. My dad and step-mom came for the afternoon and dinner and we went out to see our traditional outdoor Nativity play that has been put on by one of our local churches for a couple of decades now. They do a spectacular job and it really kicks off the Christmas season for us.

I completed 10 minutes of toning exercises twice yesterday. Felt good just to do it! And, I have that lovely little "I worked my muscles" feeling this morning!

Also finished book #51, leaving just one more to meet my goal for the year. I've chosen "Above All Things" by Tanis Rideout... A novel based on George Mallory and his wife at the time that he and his expedition were exploring and mapping Mt Everest. I have read a few other climb-based books... both non-fiction and novels, so this will be an interesting read, I think!

I'm not much of a goal setter either Kel. Yet I still manage to get things done. You just have to figure out what kinds of goals are doable and will motivate you. But if setting goals is something new for you, then just realize it takes practice. You're not always going to get it right. But you will figure it out. I have faith in you!

Hope you're having a great week!

Oh, Mary... thanks for that. The logical part of me understands it. However, I guess the bottom line for me is that I've never been a good goal setter... and have found myself "wishy washy" in most aspects of my life. I've not been a highly effective person and I think that has a great deal to do with the fact that I have not learned how to set...and pursue... effective goals.
Reasonable and measurable... intelligent, achievable goals. Time to start thinking on that for 2013 - I can already feel my feet slipping out from under me in this "maintenance mindset". I have to have something to be looking toward.

Please don't feel defeated Kel. You set some pretty big goals. And a lot of them revolved around running which I think you're finding is pretty hard for you. You like it but it leads to injury. You can't look at this as a loss but instead as a lesson learned. From that, you move forward and make adjustments.

First of all, look at the goals you should really have been able to do. Tracking your food. Maybe the thousand fitness minutes per month, no matter what it is. I usually reach that but it's mostly walking and I think that's okay. Start smaller. Setting too many big goals sets you up to fail. You need to set yourself up to succeed. And for fitness, it really needs to be something that you love to do, at least part of the time. Just grinding out a run, laps or a treadmill, every day is not fun. It's okay to have those kind of workouts but be sure that some of what you do is something you think of as fun. And I wouldn't set a whole year of goals either. Make them smaller. You say 1000 monthly fitness minutes each month for the year. The first month you don't achieve that, you already feel sunk.

My brother was a lifelong runner with many marathons under his belt. At 63, he's been finding it harder to run and his body is telling him it's time to change. He now rides a bike. He was playing soccer but now he plays softball. He works at it too. Goes out and swings the bat almost every day. So bike, yoga, pilates, dance, walk. Bowling? I know you golf but it can be spendy. Maybe start hiking on the weekend. You wouldn't believe the calories I post for a four hour hike, up and down hills with a 10+ pound pack on my back! Maybe not a winter option for you but it works around here. For you maybe snowshoeing, cross country skiing. Some friends of mine took a snowshoeing class a few years ago and they loved it.

Anyway, you can't look at this one year and this one set of goals and think you have failed. Look at all you've done in the last few years. You are way healthier now than you were when you started on this journey. You've already had to change some things, switching from the weight loss mindset to maintenance was a big one and effectively should change the way you look at the goals you set. I know you've been struggling lately but you will figure it out. But if what you're doing isn't working for you than it is time to look at things differently. You're right. You need a new plan. Let me know if I can help.

Other than the books, I've not managed any of them.

Thanks Mar.
I know what you're saying is correct.
The best comparison I can make is my friend who completed and Ironman race last year. She pretty much devoted her whole life to training for it - for more than 9 months. When it was over, I watched her flounder for a LONG time with what to do/how she felt etc etc... because she didn't have a focus.
I guess that's how I'm feeling... and just really worried about putting it back on. my whole life has been about tracking everything for so long now that I'm not sure how to manage when I don't! I will figure it out... I just hope I can do that WITHOUT gaining 20 pounds! LOL
I appreciate your support SO much, Mar.
thanks again.

You know what to do Kel! You just have to wrap your mind around it. I've read some articles about maintaining weight loss. It's way harder for someone who has been heavy to maintain a healthy weight than it is for someone who has always been at that weight. Maintenance sounds like you can relax a bit. But you still have to stay pretty vigilant. It's a bummer, I know. But you already have the tools, having lost the weight. Now you just have to apply them in a slightly different way. Hang in there. I know you can make the adjustment!

I'm sure you know this and it always sounds a little off but you are far more equipped to handle all the outside demands placed on you if you actually take care of yourself first. This may sound sexist but it really does seem to be what women do to themselves. Everyone else comes first. Can't be or you won't last. Hope you have a good week!

Thanks Mar... I know you're right.
I've fallen back into putting myself LAST with all the demands of the kids' schedules these days. It's not the right choice, but I havent' figured my way around it just yet.
I will, though!
Appreciate your good thoughts - and yes, I'll do some reading!
BIG hugs,
Kel

Maintenance is way harder than losing Kelly. It's so easy to drop your guard and let the pounds come back. But I know you can do it. In a way you have for quite some time. Your weight has remained steady. Don't give up on all the good things you've learned and don't beat yourself up for small setbacks.

You are entering what I now know can be a difficult phase of your life. It's different for everyone but all the things you are describing sound very familiar to me. I pray that you have an easier time of it than I have but it's a good time to look into whatever you can find out about this time of life. Do some reading. Make some adjustments. Try some new things. Not everything you read about will work but there a lot of women out there who have found things that work for them. Some are bound to work for you too.

I know one thing I can tell you for sure. My symptoms have always improved with exercise. I know you're good at exercising. You just have to fit it back in in a way that works for you. You'll feel better. You can do it. I'm here for you if you need me.

Well... sleep med is effective and I am SO grateful to be getting some rest. It is amazing how much it affects EVERYTHING.
Making some other significant changes and still working on adjusting to maintenance. I'm really afraid of losing control and gaining.
What I'm really unhappy with right now is just the state of my body. The weight is off but I have not been exercising much and I'm getting soft... and a little flabby. Don't like that!
And I can feel myself falling into just a little bit of bad eating habits.
Time to just reign it in and get my discipline back!

Thanks Mar! I've been thinking of you too, my friend.
I'm doing just fine - just trying to get my head around this maintenance thing, but I think I feel pretty good about it.
You've got a big week ahead - take care of you and know you're in my thoughts and prayers!

I'm great Mary. It has been a challenging week in several ways, but things are getting back on track and I am grateful that The Lord works in such mysterious ways sometimes!

Thanks for asking...and I am thinking of you too my friend!

Ohh. Pity party! Can I come? I'm sooo good at those.

But really Kelly, I'm so sorry. I hope you were checked for concussion. I fall down the stairs all the time but you make me sound really lucky. I keep thinking something bad could happen, but so far, just some bruising and a sprained ankle.

Funny you mention the embarrassment. You'd think that would be the least of your problems. But every time I've fallen, if I'm able, the first thing I do is jump up and look around to see if anyone saw. Then I check myself for injuries. Silly huh?

Take care of yourself sweetie! That sounds painful. The work can wait until you're better.

Oh boy...took a tumble last night. I was leaving my daughter's music lesson and missed the steps leaving the house. Oh...and had my arms full. SO I caught the heel of my left shoe on the bottom step, sort of twisted and came down full force on my forehead against the (thankfully wood and not brick) ledge. ZOINKS!

What a shocker. Nicely bruised and swollen about the head today, neck, shoulder and back are tender, and I have a tennis ball sized bruise on my right leg where it connected with that left heel. Sheesh. I am one big ball of embarrassed, emotional and sore today! All my great plans for leaf raking and painting are out the window. Can't even drive myself anywhere as it hurts to turn my head too much!

Dumb dumb dumb.
That's my pity party for today. Now I need to find a way to at least tidy up a bit without overdoing it. And I am frustrated!

I weighed in this morning just .2 pounds from my lowest weight ever. wow!

Interesting that I have settled into just living my life... generally making healthy choices... indulging when I choose... staying relatively active but not going crazy about exercise... eating only when I'm hungry and stopping when I'm satisfied. I'm trying not to let my whole existence be consumed with thinking about food and fitness.

It's an interesting change... and I'm feeling good about it!

Exercise is the best thing you can do for depression Kelly. Hard part is getting yourself to do it when you're depressed. Sorry you're having a hard time but I'm glad it seems to be lifting. Enjoy the rest of your day!

I feel like the fog is lifting a little... been pretty depressed lately.
Maybe it is just a matter of adjusting to the busyness of the fall schedule, or the lack of sunshine - not sure.

However, I started my day with a great run on the treadmill... running consistently at 6mph now... and now I'm cooking up some gigantes, some roasted carrot and potato soup, a shepherd's pie... and probably some cookies for my kiddos this week.

Last week was a DISASTER - worked a lot of overtime and, after Thanksgiving leftovers on Tuesday, we ate take out 3 nights in a row... not good!
I need to be more prepared for times like that, I guess, and have some simple, quick things that I can pull together. Perhaps some crockpot recipes are in order.

Anyway, I'm having a productive day even though the weather is crummy and, as always, so grateful to have Sparkpeople as my anchor!

Awesome Kelly! That sounds like a great vacation. I love the mornings too. But so does Chris and he makes everyone get up early. So I've never gotten that quiet time like you did. Don't get me wrong, I love that time with family as well. But the time to yourself sure sounds nice.

Good you're having a physical. Just because it's nothing new for women, doesn't mean it's easy. My MIL tried to tell me that it was nothing just because they all had to go through it. That doesn't make it nothing. It's a very big deal to each individual that goes through it. And how we weather it depends on so many factors. So while we all go through it, it's still different for each and everyone of us. You get advice based on someone else's experience which may be radically different from your own.

You have a sympathetic ear with me because I totally get it. For me, it's always been nice to get perspective from others. I'm here for you Kelly. The best thing I can say though is that we know it eventually will pass. What happens between here and there and how long it will take is the unknown. That's what makes it so hard.

I'm 43 Mary...and amazed and dismayed at the changes in my body and mind! I have a physical next month, so I will definitely talk with her about all this stuff. I know it's nothing new for many women, but it is very different for me!

As for our trip...
We were in Florida for 2 weeks at Madeira beach. The kids were great this year and we enjoyed quite a bit of family time. We visited the Florida Holocaust museum...heartbreaking and very well done. We also went to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, home to "Winter" the dolphin from the movie of the same name. We took a day trip over to one of the Disney waterparks and one to shop at the outlets. We wandered the tourist shops, ate out and watched the sunsets. Hubby and youngest daughter also caught a ball game in St. Pete's.

I started every day on my own, getting up hours before everyone else. I either walked or ran every day but 2 during our trip, and on those days I swam lengths! I enjoyed my journeys along the beach, spotting dolphins in the surf a couple of mornings! It was certainly HOT! By the time I got back, I would flip on the coffee maker, grab a quick shower and get into my bathing suit. Pour the coffee, grab my book and sunscreen and head down to the pool, to spend the rest of the morning alone! Everyone else did a great job of sleeping in, but I think mornings are the best time of day!

I was pretty worried about the beach when we were there, as our lovely, white sand beach was greatly altered (not nice) by hurricane Debbie back on June. However, we had word froma friend that hurricane Isaac put things right again! Lol. Glad they can work together, I guess! Just hope another one doesn't come along to damage it again!

All in all, it was great, but I really would like to start adding some adventure and variety to my travels. We will see what next summer brings, but for this year I was thankful for the time away and the beautiful place to be.

So there you have it!

emoticon I have been stagnating for a while. I have just been on vacation and although I did not eat !00% correctly I did not really pig out. I also got at least 45 minutes per day of some sort of exercise. So my habits HAVE changed to some degree. Havent weighed yet , but feel positive and I am in a different mind-set!!!!
