I admire the effort ~ I don't know how you can fit 500 minutes of cardio in a week. It's an effort just to fit 3, one hour sessions in a week.

That's over 8 hours of cardio!!! What is the breakdown of the exercise that you're doing?

I'm kind of borrowing Janice's challenge, unofficially, and trying to get to 500 minutes of cardio this week as well. So far I'm at 285. Might make it. :)

I also found that my morning exercise energized me, but I don't know if I have the gumption to get up early every day and make an hour round trip so I can keep doing it. Especially on cloudy days. Probably I'll stick with afternoon exercise to break up the day. Today I did both.. probably take the pooch for a walk tonight too. She doesn't know enough to want to stay in doors when it's in the teens out.

Hi Everyone,

It's been a hectic day at work and I've only just managed to get to the board. Well, I managed to get a good night's sleep (lights out before 12:30am) and I rolled out of bed at 5:30am and did my yoga.

I have to say that it energizes me for the rest of the day, so keeping that in mind for tomorrow when the alarm goes off I hope to be a little more enthusiatic when leaving the comfort of my cozy, luxurious bed!!

Glad to see that everyone else is being persistent in their challenges ~ it does make a difference.

Hope to have more time to post tomorrow...til then.

Blessings

Good Morning....my theory is if you need extra sleep, then take the time...your body knows what it needs....

I am an early riser, getting up between 4 and 5....this morning it was 4.....I got 45 minutes of my walking tape done and did my usual morning chores......now I am sorting paper work and getting it all filed and ready for income tax time.....that is always fun......

I generally take a 15 minute nap around lunch time, this because I come home from work, and then I am ready for the rest of the afternoon......

Amyeli, glad to hear you got out this morning.....that fresh air has got to be so good for you!!

I think the key is that nearly everybody is feeling a little blank brained in the morning. :) I'm sleeping a ton too. I'm going to bed between 8 and 10 every night, and I don't pry myself out of bed until 7:30. Heck with it. If I want to hibernate nobody's stopping me. I look at it as building up a sleep surplus for the summer when I normally go 90 miles an hour until midnight.

Hi Amy, I'm sleeping even more then before plus even more blank brained earlier in the day but no one noticed. Doubling my exercise has made me feel strong. I envy you that nice ride this morning on the horse being pursued by his feet.

Well, that was great. Half an hour of trotting on a horse who thought somebody was following her because her hoofsteps were echoing off the houses. :) More fun than it sounds. I feel good inside. How's everybody else doing?

Good Morning to all!!

I did my 45 minute Core Ball yesterday, and today I have sore muscles....so today, I will get a walking work out....

So far for the week, I am 75 minutes off my challenge with 225 to go.....I managed 25 grams of fiber for Monday, but only 17 for yesterday.....not doing as well with the sugar.....

Hi Amyeli, so sorry you are having a difficult time...

Walking is great for stress.....I like to take bubble baths, spending time in places that you find comfort in is great also......I know that stress is difficult to work through, but for me it usually subsides shortly......I trust this will be the same for you also.......

I think my goal for the rest of the week is going to be finding ways to de-stress. I don't know why, but I'm just a bundle of tension. Today I went for a walk which helped temporarily. I had some rum, which also is helping temporarily. I need to find my inner peace.

I'm going to go walk the dog, and then I'm going to go to the library. Just being there is usually soothing.

Janice, Congratulations on getting your challenge accomplished (your body probably needed the sleep to recuperate so that you can get the full benefits of the workout).

Technically I've done half my challenge ~ getting to bed earlier!!

The yoga for me is active (30 minutes of a series of vinyasas) followed by a 5 minute tantric meditation, so staying in bed doesn't "really" count. That's okay...no one said this had to be achieved to perfection in one week. This is building a habit that becomes a regular part of my lifestyle and I will get there.

Be back tomorrow...
Blessings

Hi MagicWriter, the extra sleep is a sort of meditation isn't it? I did do my challenge and then slept 12 hours.

Good Morning All....our village appears to be expanding, which is just lovely.

A quick post with a word of encouragement to all to stick with your challenge and be kind to yourself. The expectations we place on ourselves can often lead to harsh recriminations when we fall short, so remember to offer yourself the same words of encouragement you would give to anyone else here.

That said, I managed to get to bed earlier (as challenged), which meant a good night's sleep....right through the alarm, so no yoga this morning!! Now at this point I could say, forget it for this week, but it's only Tuesday and there are more days left in the week than have already passed, so I will focus on the moment and wake up determined on Wednesday to fulfill this commitment to myself.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

Blessings

I am looking to try not to gain over the holidays and during my current down time (was in a car accident on the 12/06) Then get back into the swing of things. More weight lifting with a lot of aerobics mixed in. Would like to lose the additional 8-10 #'s. Keep my eating under control and keep a positive attitude.

Good Morning Paolina!

I am so excited to see so many joining us on this board........

I read an article sometime ago that berries and beans are the highest source of fiber.....don't know how much of either you have to eat, but this might help you add to your fiber.....

I have found since I started the Mediterranean that my fiber has doubled.....only because I was not eating enough fruit and veggies to begin with....I am also finding that my protein on this way of eating is quite sufficient even without all the meat products and the carbs are quite in balance also......I am happy to say that this is the best "diet" I have used that works for all of my needs......

Wishing everyone a wonderful, peacefilled, happy day today.....with blessings for accomplishing whatever you have on your agenda.......emoticon

It's great to see how many people have joined this challenge and how varied the goals are. They will give us all ideas for other areas we should work on.

The Mediterranean Diet sounds enjoyable as well as healthy, Myrna. Congratulations on the 2lb. loss!

I tracked my food yesterday and so far today and by the end of the week I should have a much better idea of how to increase the fibre and carbs and lower the protein. I eat a lot of fruit and have two or three vegetables daily but my big problem at the moment is that I'm not allowed grains. Brown rice, which I use instead, has very little of both.

Everyone sounds really keen and I'm sure we'll all learn a lot from this.

It is based on the way they ate in the 50's more so than now......it is extremely heart healthy and the rewards are weight loss too......

The food pyramid shows as follows:

High saturated fat, meats, pastries, candy, etc., butter and margarine only monthly if then.

Other lean red meats, lean pork, eggs (4 or less), veal, skinless poultry (1-3 oz), fish (6-8 oz) weekly (optional).

Nuts and seeds, 1 oz or more (approximately 1/3 c nuts), low-fat or non fat dairy, or (preferably) low-fat calcium-fortified milk and soy milk products, 2 or more servings (8 oz skim milk, 6 oz. low-fat yogurt, or 1 oz low-fat cheese), Legumes (beans, peas), 2 or more 1/2 cup servings, fruit, 2 or more servings (whole fruit, preferably instead of fruit juice), vegetables, 3 or more servings (1/2 cup cooked or 1 c. raw leafy green vegetables),whole grains, 8 or more servings daily.

Olive oil or canola oil.

Eating in this manner lends to high fiber which fills you up and staves off the hunger, but because so much of it is low calorie, you can eat lots more.......it also is helpful in getting rid of cravings because you eat diverse and varied food.

The book that I got the information from is "The Mediterranean Diet" by Marissa Cloutier, MS.RD and Eve Adamson.....it has meal plans and recipes to get you started.......I have found the last 4 days of eating in this manner to be quite satisfying and fulfilling and totally enjoyable.......I do not eat red meat, eat sparingly of chicken and fish, but it is hard for me to be a total vegetarian (not too big on tofu and tofu burgers and such).......love my eggs and am not a big fan of too much dairy....so this plan fills the gaps for me wonderfully well.....

MIND: The way we think.

BODY: The way we feel.

SPIRIT: The way we are and always will be.

Janice you are too funny!!

I just got back from my monthly massage...feeling very relaxed at this point so I am going to finish my evening in relaxed mode......talk to you all tomorrow.......

Oh, I did my 30 minute walk today.....so that leaves 270 minutes for the week.....I blew the no sugar plan already....had to have a piece of home made Potica, albeit was a small piece......didn't get the high fiber either, but that will come tomorrow.

Amy maybe your goal could be something like a 5 minute meditation, thinking in positive terms and build yourself up.
Anne, isn't it interesting that we know what will help us.
MLSmith, that is a good idea, arriving home hungry can put me into a shark like feeding frenzy.

Well, girls, you aren't going to believe this.....I found it hard to believe it myself.....I gorged myself at work last week, on Friday I decided to get real serious about my program so I started the Mediterranean Diet that I had been reading and studying...........on Friday, Sat and Sun I adhered real close to what I had learned, did my exercise program faithfully for those 3 days and this morning when I got on the scales, I lost 2 lbs........now I am not counting this for my goal this week, so I will still look to a 1 lb. loss by the end of this week......but I was astounded!!!

Let's put our noses to the grindstone, (so to speak), be mindful of what we put into our mouths, make sure we get our exercise in on a daily basis (even if it is ony 10 minutes), and get ourselves going.......

Hi everyone,

This looks like a good place to start. I haven't yet joined a discussion because I felt pretty much on track. But then came Thanksgiving... And then my birthday... Now Christmas cookies are everywhere. I can't do it alone. I've noticed that my worst time of day is afterschool (I'm a teacher)and so I need to make a plan for NOT snacking badly. My goal for this week is to plan and bring to work a nice, healthy snack everyday.

Hi Everyone,
I love your challenge board. I just wrote a note in Myrna's journal and then I found your challenge board. I would like to join. I am really struggling right now with everything. My challenge for this week is to spend at least 15 minutes in the morning reading my spriritual books and meditating. I have lost myself and I need to reconnect. Once I do that..........I will have the strength to make my life better. I am also going to try and get to bed earlier! My goal.......get to bed by 11pm and be up at 7am.........do my spiritual reading and meditating first thing! Thanks for the board and the opportunity to take baby steps. Anne

Well weekly goal Challenge buddies, if I can't reduce my calories then I have to knock myself out exercising. Next week I think I will challenge myself to eat less then 2000 calories for 7 days. That has not happened yet.

Janice - Knock yourself out. Just be like that Little Red Engine "I think I can, I think I can..." and chug along the exercise path and knock off those minutes.

Myrna - It's lovely to be here and know that I already enjoy the company

I would love to do yoga later in the day, but I start work at 8:00am, so in order to fit it in I have to get up early.....emoticon and I'm not really a morning person (unless of course I've done an all-nighter and then I'm fine)

Ah well...back to the office work. Will continue to check in during the week and see how everyone is progressing.

Blessings

I'm feeling tired just contemplating your 500 minutes this week. I went for my two mile walk today but I just kind of drifted through. You have my respect for upping your exercise during the winter.

Hi Janice.....that is the good thing about challenging on a weekly basis.....you don't have to think you have to do something for 30 days and feel overwhelmed.....just take baby steps for now until we all figure out where we are going with this....

Magicwriter.....so, so happy to see you here!! I love to do yoga, but since I live alone, I can do it pretty much whenever I want to........but I don't get it in every day either, but am working towards that becoming a wonderful, daily habit....

Dear MagicWriter, without writers what would Minnie and I do? She loves to read and I like to read, we are blessed by all who write.
The only thing exercising 2x my normal amount will do is tire me. There is no reason I can't do it for 1 week anyway. I want to see what will happen. Will I get stronger? Will it become easier? Will I die of a heart attack?emoticon

Hi Janice,

It's also when I love to write and the energy is always so much quieter when the rest of the world sleeps.

How goes the exercise goal? Just wondering if you've increased too much by doubling it? Although, if you know you've been cruising at your current pace, maybe it's not too much....

Words really can't express how grateful I am to have found this board and your support. Thank you.

Hi MagicWriter, it is easy to understand why night would be your choice of time for meditation and yoga. Everyone else is sleeping and no one will distract you. It's hard to think your thoughts when some else is injecting thiers.

Happy Monday to all!

My challenge is twofold ~

I want to 1. resume my yoga practice on a daily basis (did not happen this morning!!) and 2. ensure I am in bed by midnight (did not happen last night) so that I can be up at 5:30am to do my yoga practice (weekdays).

Yoga on the weekend can be after a sleep-in (up at 7am).

So I have missed today, but my challenge is to commit to this for the next 6 days.

This is an increase from doing yoga 3 times a week and I am a nightowl and love being up til the wee hours of the morning, so I will need to rework my day in order to be in bed by midnight in order to get a decent 5 hours sleep.

Here's to success to all

Blessings

Hi Myrna, I am so tired this morning that I will need to push myself to get a regular workout in. The challenge I am doing to myself may need alteration.

Had a great idea while taking my shower this morning!

At the end of our challenge week, we should award ourselves a star (from the emoticons) for each challenge that we managed to attain and each goal we reached. This would be accumulative, adding the stars each week...if you don't want to put bunches of stars on (after a time), then you could just put the number of stars you have accumulated. I think this would be a wonderful way to show our accomplishments for ourselves and others....and bunches of bright stars would be awesome!!!

Hi Paolina, it is nice to meet another Myrna follower. Minnie will be here soon and Magic Writer said she would contribute. I'm hoping we develop a warm group of people who can support and listen to one another.

Hi Myrna, I'm following you this time!

You've made a great start towards this week's goal, Janice. Which Pilates are you doing?

My challenge is to try to increase my fibre and carbs. I will track my food every day this week to see how I can do it.

Hi Myrna Today did 60 minutes on the treadmill, lifted weights and did pilates for a total of 120 minutes. That's twice as much as I normally do.
What are you going to challenge yourself to do?

Good morning Myrna, and all who want to join us.
My goal is going to be extreme. 500 minutes of cardio in 7 days.
This is Sunday and my husband really hates to see me at the computer so good bye until this evening

This is a new kind of challenge board and we decided to set it up on the journal board.

What we, Janice and I have been discussing, is a different way of challenging ourselves. What we came up with is to set our own challenges and goals and work on them for a week at a time.

A few of the challenges that each of us might consider is: tracking the minutes you expend on a daily basis for work out/exercise and anything else that expends energy on a day by day basis. Counting steps you take on a daily basis. Eliminating our "addiction" to certain foods and track that daily. The addition of healthy foods that we don't normally eat consistantly. Pick as many, or as few challenges as you feel you can comfortably work with.

The idea is to track daily for a week (5-7 days) and at the beginning of the next week (always Monday), add another challenge if you feel ready, but continue to maintain the challenges you set in the previous week until you feel you have accomplished those. Then up the challenge to include more minutes as your challenge for the week, or whatever coincides with your choices.

Welcome to this board.....we hope that the smaller time involved will help all of us to overcome our weaknesses, gain more strength in the areas we need to, and not feel so overwhelmed by trying to accomplish something in a longer time period.. Little steps, one moment at a time......we can all glean knowledge and ideas from each other, and support as needed along the way.......

So, starting tomorrow, let's make this a positive experience, set your goals and work with them on a day to day basis.
