I shamefully admit my children's diet was as terrible as mine before joining Spark. I didn't cook. I couldn't cook, I couldn't be bothered. My children's meals consisted of grilled cheese sandwiches, hot dogs, chicken nuggets, fries, prepackaged snack foods- convenience foods (just like my own diet). Their diet has remained that way even though mine has changed drastically. I cook all my meals and spend most of the day in the kitchen. But children's diet has been haunting me this entire time.
My hesitation came from many failed attempts after spending tons of effort and ingredients to make healthy meals for my kids that are simply rejected and wind up in the trash. My son (4 yrs old) in particular is *the most* pickiest eater on the planet. He's picky about texture, taste, foods together with other foods and usually rejects anything *new*.
So I developed a new plan. I would simply not buy the things I didn't want them eating. I sat them down and told them my plan. That I want them to be healthy and to be healthy we need to eat healthy. That I would be making all their foods myself and they would have to try new things.
My plan was;
a) Not buy foods I didn't want them eating
b) Research "simple" healthy kids foods that don't require much prep or many ingredients so I don't get too frustrated when they were refused and are fun and appealing for kids. I discovered this website that is just AWESOME: http://www.superhealthykids.com/healthy-kids-recipes
c) I brainstormed different healthy meals I thought they would like for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.
d) I gave them two bite servings of whatever I was eating or a modified kids/taste version.
e) When meals were rejected, I wrapped them up and put them away to offer again later.
f) Lots of praise!!!! When my kids tried the new foods and even more when they finished them.
It's been about 2 weeks now and my children have accepted their new diet and have found quite a few meals they love. I thought my son would be the most challenging but I cannot believe how proud I am of him!! He's been the best. The first couple of days he scoffed everything I gave him. He even went as far as hiding some blueberry pancakes I made him under his dresser in his room. He didn't like blueberries in them. Even though he likes both food items seperately. Now he not only eats the new things I give him, he polishes them right off! He hasn't been complaining, whinging or refusing anything in the last week. He's even eating foods I never thought he would ever even try. Like my black bean, red onion (hates onion), bell pepper (wouldn't eat them before because he was sure they were hot) and mango salad. My daughter loves that one as well. I made them pork tenderloin with apples (cinnamon/nutmeg) last night. A meal that normally would have been refused (my son hates foods with other foods like I said earlier) and they polished off the entire thing. They've also developed a taste for steamed cauliflower/broccoli (I could never get them to eat them raw), homemade oatmeal, homemade pancakes, healthy french toast with veggies/fruit, my son loved my lightly breaded haddock and asked for it again the next day (my daughter, not so much) as well as my cottage cheese macaroni (my daughter, not so much when she's the big pasta eater) and my son is in love with my homemade granola bars. I am soooo proud of him. Here I thought he would be my biggest challege because my daughter is usually more open to new foods and he's made an amazing transformation in a such a short time.
And I feel like a weight has been lifted. My children's diet has been affecting me this entire time. My dirty little secret of hotdogs and kraft dinner while I ate really healthy, fresh and balanced, I was feeding my kids garbage foods. I have Sparks to thank for that! You have taught me how to set goals, create plans and to stay diligent despite set backs. Not only have you changed my entire life and who I am for the better; an energetic, healthy, fit, master chef, exercise/activity lovin', ambitious, busy, goal setting, self improving mom but these big changes are now improving my family lives. We're all looking forward to a healthy and active spring/summer; camping, nature hikes, gardening, going for walks, playing at the park and eating healthy, FUN seasonal foods!
Thanks Spark!!!! You rock!! Not only have you changed my appearance, you have changed my entire attitude and life! I have soooo much gratitude to the website, the experts and my fellow Spark members. For all you newbs, stay with the program and use all it has to offer. Don't give up, even when times get hard. Just push yourself over those hurdles, keep setting new goals for yourself and you will emerge beautiful butterflies in every aspect of your lives.

"Toning" is marketing muscles to women who are afraid if they pick up a barbell, they'll leave the gym looking like She-Hulk. If you don't want to get bulky, lift heavy!
I can bench Nicole Richie, eat more than she does in a day before noon, I have a good 20 lbs on her but could still wear her pants.
