I am a firm believer that stress is a neglected aspect of weight gain. If a person could reduce their stress, they'd automatically reduce their waistline. If you are experiencing a lot of stress and anxiety, you need to find ways to reduce that stress that don't involve food.
You can diet and exercise and lose weight, BUT if you don't do something about your stress, you'll just regain the weight. And that's not healthy. Stress isn't healthy either. Stress can break down a person's immune system. That's why you need to do your best to try to relax.
Whenever you feel stressed out, instead of turning to food, put on your coat and take a walk. Walking is not only great cardiovascular exercise, it can help you reduce your stress. Sit and drink a cup of herbal tea. Tea can help a person to relax. Sit in the tub and have a bubble bath. put on some music and listen to your favorite songs. knit or sew or crotchet or paint. Having a hobby or doing a craft is another way to reduce stress.
This may seem silly. Knitting will help me lose weight ? Knitting will help you relax, which in turn will help you reduce stress and keep you from stress eating.
For now, start with SMALL steps. don't try to do everything at once or you will end up frustrated. Set some simple goals. Example, if you're not eating 6-9 servings of fresh fruit and veggies, set a goal to eat 2-3 servings each day for one week. if you're not drinking 8 glasses of water, set a goal to drink 2-4 glasses each day for one week. if you're not exercising, don't try to do an hour a day, set a goal to take a 30 minute walk each day for one week.
Once you've achieved these goals, then you set new ones. And this is how we begin to learn healthier habits. Don't look at good health or weight loss with an all or nothing mentality. every little bit really does make a difference.
Take baby steps, literally and figuratively. remember, no one ever became a healthy eater overnight. it's impossible. slow and easy really does win this race.
Don't try to be perfect, drop to 1200 cals a day, and work out for an hour a day, 6 days a week. That will set you up for failure, you will get frustrated and quit.
Start tracking your calories here, every day. That really is key to losing weight - your caloric intake. You have a range...use it. I lost my first 25 simply by tracking my food every day.
Start bringing your calories down a little at a time - as you do so, increase your consumption of veggies to make up volume. You can actually eat more volume if you eat more veggies. 4 cups of carrots is 200 calories. That's what? 30 potato chips?
Exercise is great for releasing stress - even a 20 minute walk every day is good. Youtube has every exercise imaginable on it - for free. Yuo can do them in your home, whenever you want to. If you've never done yoga before, it might really benefit you - it's great to relieve stress, look on youtube for beginners Yoga.
Support - Your boyfriend is not your only source of support - that's what SP is for . There are always people here to talk to, vent to, ask questions, give support, etc. Come here often and post. Start a blog on your Sparkpage - might help you to vent about what is going on with your Dad - you might meet others here who have gone through something similar to what you are (and he is).
I hope to see you around more :)

The best exercise in the world is to bend down and help someone up.
I understand where you are coming from, you take one step forward with the exercise then two steps back with the junk food. I have been there. Take it one day, one meal, one snack at a time. If you make a poor food choice don't dwell on it and don't let one poor choice justify ruining the day. You can do this and you know the value it is a lifestyle not a stopover.

I have been up and down with this working out and eating right thing. I been having a hard time with both. The more I work out the more junk food I eat. I am getting more fustrated everyday. My only support system is my boyfriend. I don't think I can do this. My dad was just diginosed with lung and prostate cancer.... he is only 46. I need to get in shape before my health does that to me. I use to be able to be my only support system but I realized losing weight and keeping a schedule is hard... Any tips to make this easier?
