I came here hoping to find a good solution to my own greasy/sweaty mess after I work out, but instead found someone that makes any excuse to not exercise.

Dedication is what it takes. Plain and simple. I travel an hour each way for my full time job on top of many other obligations and don't make nonsensical excuses.

You don't want your mother to watch you exercise? Really?

My dear, the only thing standing in your way is you. Sorry to be brash, but if you can't get past the excuses, you won't succeed.

First Goal: 215 Lbs (Met Goal 8/1/2013)- Got down to 201 before I got married in November and had a bit of a "hiccup" in my weight loss... back at it in Feb 2014 :)
Second Goal: 196 Lbs (out of OBESITY BMI range)
Third Goal: 164 lbs (into NORMAL BMI range)


Ultimate goal is 150 lbs or so, but taking it one step at a time!

I don't *think* that she is making an argument about body density...at least I hope not.

Bunnykicks, it says on her page that she wears a size 16. She has also mentioned having a small frame size in the past.

If you are a 16 and your goal is to be a 4/6, 70 pounds is not a totally groundless guess about how much you need to lose. I was mostly basing that guess on how you look in the striped dress though--but supposedly you have lost some weight since then.

ETA: at 5'5" a middle-of-the-road healthy BMI would have you weighing 120. This does not even take into account your small frame size. This means you need to have a total weight loss of 80+ pounds.

This is just ridiculous, either you want it or you don't. You will either make the time or you won't You have every tool you need available to you and all the support you need right here on SparkPeople. You have to want it. We all struggle with motivation and how to fit in a healthy lifestyle into our daily lives. You don't have to get healthy, but we all want that for you. We all know how hard it is mentally and physically to be unhealthy but it is also mentally and physically hard to become healthy. Pick your hard and commit to it.

I think what she means is, she believes she has the sort of frame and body composition that is dense/compact, that weighs high on the scale while having small-for-that-weight tape measurements.

Which - I... hm. How to put this. Well. Firstly the hard facts - "dense/compact" body composition = "lean muscle" and the only way a person develops lean muscle is through physical effort (a LOT of physical effort). In the context of a thread where the OP is playing the "but it makes me gross and sweattttyyy" card to get out of the occassional 20-minute session of low intensity activity, I wouldn't expect there's a whole lot of hidden lean muscle affecting the scale readings to the point anyone would say "wow, you weigh that much? you look so small for that weight."

Secondly... the OP is quite the shutterbug and has posted many pictures... the pictures would indicate that the OP's weight correlates perfectly normally with her actual body size, and possibly a little *light* on the scale relative to actual physical size. That stripy black and white dress is NOT a 4/6, c'mon now. While women's clothing sizes vary madly between designers, I don't know that there's any place on earth where that dress could bear the tag "small." I would peg it to be a size 20/22. Maybe a super-stretchy 18+. I know, because I have clothes that size in my closet. And I weighed more than 186# when I was wearing them. Which - there is nothing wrong with wearing that size... we all come in different shapes and sizes and there is no judgement attached to my observation.

I am almost twice your age, have a much bigger frame size, have fibromyalia, have no knee on the left side and a disease which causes muscle wasting. The fact that you could not keep up with me physically is only because you CHOOSE to live a lazy life. Nobody is saying that you should exercise 900 minutes a week--we are saying that you could find a way to occasionally work out if you wanted to do so.

I don't have a regular schedule either--I work different days and different shifts every week. So I plan my exercise around work and other commitments. It is not hard.

The "kind of person" who wears a particular size? Huh? I just bought size 8 jeans yesterday...does that make me a different kind of person than when my jeans were size 10?

I can't work out 7 days a week either (Actually "won't is probably a better word. I guess I could but I really don't want to so I don't.)

It is as if your mind keeps creating reasons why you are going to fail to prevent you from succeeding. You have an uphill battle-you are living with obese people and have seen your parents model a very unhealthy lifestyle. (don't even get me started on your dad walking around with nothing on.)

I think you need to believe in yourself and keep telling yourself that you can do it-that this time you are not going to fail. Despite all the obstacles, You need to have the self confidence to reach your goals.

Maybe you have failed for so long you don't believe you can do it.

Have you considered the dry shampoo idea someone posted earlier? There are even recipes online for making it yourself.

I used to work outdoors for eight hours a day, in the humidity and dirt. Sometimes my co-workers and I would go out afterwards. We'd all be sweaty, dirty, and exhausted. The most we'd do would be to brush our hair, sprinkle on some baby powder, and wash our faces and hands. Being a little sweaty isn't that bad.

1. I am NOT 70 pounds overweight. I never was. If I lost 70 pounds, I would be underweight. Besides, I'm the kind of person that fits into a size 4-6 top and small to medium when I was STILL overweight.

2. I don't know my schedule from day to day.

3. Time is not the only factor. The fact that my hair gets greasy after a workout, but too oily if I over wash it is an issue.

4. Unlike you, Azul, I cannot physically do hours upon hours of exercise 7 days a week. If I go on a 9 mile walk to and from the gym today, I probably won't be able to walk without limping for a week afterwards. A very brisk walk with 2 minute jogging intervals for 20-30 minutes is a hard workout for me. And since I dislike working out in general, forcing myself to do 20 minutes is hard enough.

I think that people are judging you more for being 70 pounds overweight than they are for how you smell.

I'm also not getting how you can't fit exercise and several showers into a day when you don't have a full-time job. Since your obligations vary from day to day, make a schedule for each week and plan out your exercise times at the beginning of the week. If you have one chaotic day, find some time on the other six days of the week to work out. You could use Outlook, you could print out calendars from MS Word, you could use your phone or iPod to create a calendar...you could even draw a calendar with crayons and cover it with stickers if that is what floats your boat.

Get organized and you CAN do this. It is not that difficult.

According to your other thread, that babysitting thing is ONCE per week. How much of a complexity can it possibly be to work exercise and basic hygiene around a 4 hour shift of babysitting?

I work with people that have mental and physical disabilities in their home so they can live on their own. I love my job..... but I work VERY long hours, I start work Saturday at 12pm and get off work Monday morning at 8am. By the time Monday roles around I have worked out at least three times and am relatively clean, all without leaving their house and being unable to use their shower. I'm guessing that the kids you babysit go to bed before the parents come home. Between their bedtime and the parents arrival get your workout on! Bust out some push-ups, crunches, some yoga, or buy/borrow a Kettle-bell and work it out. The kids might even have fun doing workouts with you early in the day or evening when you work out. Sparkpeople has how to guides for every single thing I listed and so much more. For the cleanliness issue.... babywipes are AMAZING. I always carry on me my deodorant, a travel sized perfume, baby wipes, and face wipes... pull your hair up into a ponytail or half up/half down and BAM presentable. I know its not ideal, trust me, as soon as my shift ends I'm rushing into my shower. If you wan't to be healthy you just have to do it. You can do this!

I have lost over 100lbs in the past year plus--working out 5 days a week, every week--and I have done it all while working full time, going to school part-time (at a school a 1.5+ hr commute away), and doing an 18hr/wk internship. I literally have no time for myself whatsoever but I find an hour for the gym, because it's my priority.

At a certain point you have to just move beyond excuses. If a weight problem is your cross to bear, it's never going to go away or get easier; in fact, it will only get much, much harder, particularly if you're not willing to make yourself uncomfortable, since that's what it takes.

I hope you find what you are looking for, here--but I must say I cannot relate as sweating has probably been the most minimal of all obstacles I've encountered on my journey.

Well, if 20 minutes of walking is kicking your behind, you are going to have to slowly work up to doing more. When you get up to the 60+ minute level, you might find that the whole experience of exercising is less annoying/more efficient. At some point, when you are fitter, you may find that 20 or 30 minutes of brisk walking does not even make you sweat enough to need a shower. I often walk or jog on my lunch break, and even on a warm day I don't need to wash my hair afterwards.

You know, most of us have full-time jobs, relationships and hobbies and we still manage to exercise. Many people here have young children they still manage to make exercise happen.

Do you make a daily or weekly schedule and figure in when/how you will work out? That might be worth a try. I LOVE to exercise and don't think of it as a burden, but I still need to write it on my calendar so that I have a game plan.

You just have to establish your true priorities here. If you truly want to get healthy/lose weight/feel better then you have to not let the little things get in your way. Everyone that works out sweats. Simple as that. If you want it to not interfere with things, workout and shower at the beginning or end of your day. Make it a good long workout and you won't have to do it but once a day. We cannot make your schedule for you, nor can we make workouts any less sweaty. There have been some good ideas here. Just try and implement them. If one doesn't work then try something else, but don't give up. Keep trying. Otherwise all you will have is excuses and regret.

Azul- Some days, that's certainly possible, but I still prefer to NOT work out while people (my mom) are staring at me. And then, there's not a guarantee that I'll even have access to the TV.

Tonight, I got home from church around 9:45 (I skipped going out to the diner with my friends). I had some roasted root veggies that I precooked, but I still needed to make dinner (I picked up some canned tuna and cottage cheese on my way home to make some tuna patties). It took about 20-30 minutes to cook dinner, so by the time I finished eating, it was close to 11- and I had enough calories left over for a nice dessert (yogurt with chocolate chips, strawberries, and chocolate covered dried fruit).

I DID have a small snack before 7, but I was definitely hungry when I got home, and I've been trying not to allow myself to get TOO hungry. Eating dinner was my first priority.

I try to finish eating before midnight, so by the time I digest my food enough to work out, it'll be after midnight. Realistically, waiting until I get home doesn't always work. I got home around 10pm after babysitting last week (my job was cancelled for tomorrow due to snow).

I certainly would rather exercise first or last thing in the day, but that isn't always possible.

And even though I've been doing shorter 20 minute workouts, they've been kicking my butt. Today, I did one mile with Leslie Sansone that alternated brisk walking with about two minutes of higher impact jogging intervals. It got my heart rate up, I was out of breath. Could I have done another mile? Possibly, but not as strong as the first one. I was wiped. If I were doing one of her original workouts (like the 1 mile get up and get started), I would be ready for a second mile, but this was a more advanced mile, and I did it straight through without any modifications, etc.

As mentioned upthread, this is part of the reason I exercise for an hour+, 3 times a week. It's not just the time spent exercising, it's getting dressed, putting on the heart rate monitor, showering afterwards, etc.

If you're insisting on sticking with 20 min workouts daily (which I'm sure you will), I'm sure you can find 20 more minutes to shower. It's like going to work - you plan for the 8 hours you'll be there, and also the hour it takes to get ready and get there. It's part of being a grownup.

Do something everyday that your future self will thank you for.

Okay, this is probably over sharing but it is what it is. I occasionally have to fit in a work out and then don't have time to wash my hair or shower. I always carry full change of clothes, baby wipes, baby powder, deodorant and dry shampoo. Dry shampoo is great for a quick fix. Not all dry shampoos are the same so play with them. Baby powder can also go in your hair to absorb oil. My hair is long enough to put up in a French twist or ponytail. The wipes work enough to temporarily get me through the day until I can shower. I prefer a shower just like anyone else but when time is limited, I will use "tools" to get by. Even doing small 10 minute workouts can produce sweat. Decide what's more important and go for it!

Yes, I would have thought that straight hair would be a cinch to deal with...I can't even blow dry my hair because of the curl/texture.

Why can't you exercise at the end of the day, after you babysit?

I wash my hair with conditioner, too. I don't know how well that works with straight hair.

This is why I prefer long workouts. By the time you put on a bra and shoes and then shower afterwards, you might as well get a real workout. Working out at the beginning or end of the day helps reduce the number of showers.

I have "ethnic" hair of the sort that doesn't respond well to shampoo. I never shampoo more than once a day--I just rinse my hair out with water, condition and then add leave-in conditioner.

Another thing that works well for fine hair is to put baking soda and water on your hair then rinse with cider vinegar. Much cheaper than shampoo and it makes your hair really soft.

Everybody that works out, sweats. And finds some way of dealing with it. Most people that work out don't wake up at 3am to do so. Many people that work out have schedules as cluttered and complicated as yours.

Point is... if there's a will, there's a way. If there's no will, there's no way. If "sweat management" is enough to deter you from working out, then you won't work out.

What about that is supposed to answer my question? Suppose I have several interviews lined up for Thursday morning to early afternoon. I might have just enough time to squeeze in a workout between my last interview and needing to get to my babysitting job, but that may not be enough time to change twice and shower.

And what about lunch break workouts?

I suppose I could wake up at three in the morning and work out- if I had room to do it in my bedroom (my dad likes going downstairs for a late-night snack wearing absolutely nothing), but that would mean not sleeping through my alarm. I'm not sure I'm able to do that. After all, I've slept through the smoke detector going off before. When I try to wake up at 3am, I don't hit the snooze button. I actually sleep right through it.

But what if my friend and I decide to go on a walk/jog after he gets off work? We're likely to go OUT afterwards, so there's no time to shower then. I don't want to feel smelly, sweaty, and gross all evening.

It almost makes me NOT want to work out.

So, I've been trying to get into a workout routine, but I'm really struggling with it,

One of the problems I have is that even with a simple 10-20 minute workout, I still get sweaty and gross. I have to wash my hair after a workout, but that also means I need to wash my hair daily. My hair does NOT do well with being washed daily.

It's easy to fit in a 20 minute workout into the day, but adding in another 20-30 minutes to shower and change afterwards, it makes the task of exercising daily a little more daunting.

Any advice?

I've tried dry shampoos before, but I don't really care for them.
