Well.... when I know I'm going to hit a situation like you describe.... where once I start, I cannot seem to stop myself.... there are a few options. The first one is just not start. (One bite is too many, 100 bites is never enough.) "No, thank you, I already ate dinner and I'm full." It's not like you're talking about the type of food that is so special, it would be a shame not to at least taste it. This is fairly standard stuff that you could eat any time. In those circumstances, I just tell myself I'll eat some, some other time. But not tonight.
The second option is to not start until right at the very end of the evening, right before leaving. Out of all the stuff there, I choose ONE item to have a bite of, eat it and then get up to go. Most of the time, the hot fried stuff is cold and greasy and unappetizing by then anyway. Third option.... carry along some healthy snacks for myself.
