Working in a podiatry office...First and foremost make sure you have plantar fasciitis and not another foot condition. I had PF in both feet. Stretching is most important!! Ice is also a great relief (no more than 20 minutes at a time, or you could be doing damage to the tissue in your feet). Using a frozen bottle of water works the best. Make sure you do stretches before you put your feet on the floor first thing in the morning. Make the effort to stretch throughout the day. I tried the "boot" at night and never woke up with it on in the morning. I found using the step machine at the gym, placing my heels slightly off the end helped me the most (I did this daily). It takes a long time..sometimes months to feel relief. Even when you do feel relief continue the stretching.

I think I have plantar fasciitis as well... everything I've been reading suggests that it comes from our flat, paved world; that the foot is engineered to deal with uneven terrain, and walking on pavement and with serious arch support in the shoes causes the muscles to weaken. That's kind of the opposite of what people are saying here. *Sigh* - they never really "know," do they?
I also read the the fasciitis CAUSES the heel spurs, rather than the other way around. (Weird).
A friend's mom who has had it said she cured hers by using a step, doing calf raises and then dropping down lower than the step.
I found out approx. 8-9 yrs. ago that I had a heal spur. Doc said it wasn't bad enough for surgery (to remove it) and handed me a piece of paper with stretching exercises to do everyday. I don't recall how long it took for his advice to work but it did. I can't even remember how long I've been spur-pain free but to this day, I still do my stretches immediately after getting out of bed every morning. *whew*. :-)

I have a heel spur now. I had one years ago when I milked cows for a living and walked on cement for hours a day. Shoes were one factor and I had my back out of whack which made me walk funny too. I just this summer got one that I am suffering with. I think it was from walking in cowboy boots while leading therapy horseback riding students. Now, I have one pair of shoes that are Dr. Scholls with a heel insert. They make it better. I think not going barefooted is better. I try to wear my shoes as soon as I get out of bed until I go to bed. I was scared to walk, but it really is better as long as you have good shoes and get going. I have decided to ride more too. It is supposed to be over in a month.

Heel Spurs are often associated with plantar fasciitis. Good arch supports in your shoes and properly fitted shoes (many people wear the wrong fitting shoes for their feet and the way they walk) can help with this.
Do your best to concentrate on trying to eat as healthfully as possible and to watch your portions. When it comes to weight loss or weight gain, what matters most is what we eat. Good nutrition is what takes the weight off and keeps it off. Exercise is what keeps our bodies fit and healthy. So, you do the best you can for now.
If you find it difficult to stand or walk for long periods, then why not sit in a chair and do some chair aerobics ? Coach Nicole has a couple of cardiovascular chair workouts posted in the fitness section. Work your upper body muscles while your lower body recovers.
I have decided to join a wellness class and have a workout buddy but I now have a sour in my heel :( I wish it would hurry up and go away. Ice, Tylenol, stretching exercises are helping a little but still very painful :(
