You've gotten some great advice here. I agree with keeping ice cream out of the house for a time. If I buy it, I find I do much better with a portion controlled ice cream treat (like a Klondike bar, etc.) It's harder to fool myself on the portion size when they are individually packaged. Otherwise with a scoop, a half a cup serving easily becomes a cup or 2.

Hang in there. We can do this!

I am thinking working on sparkpeople every evening as nourishment for my mind-- afterall it is the mind that triggers binging-- I think getting my mind right allows me to let go of destructive behaviors...BTW- I had 1.5 cups of ice cream today-- and will not buy it again-- I just can't have it here! emoticon

Honey hang in there! We all have our moments of weakness (I ate two dove dark chocolate bars last night!) Don't beat yourself up, unless it becomes a pattern. I often find myself binging when I am under a lot of stress, or sometimes bored. My emotions wreck havoc on my inner self control.
Try to keep things around the house to munch on that are healthier. Also evaluate the why's of it.....that is often the hardest part of weight loss, overcoming the emotional aspect of things.

I Have found that there are certain foods that I cannot keep in the house....ice cream is one of them.....I accept this.....If I want an ice cream cone...I go out and have one portion....I believe prevention is the best medicine! also can't keep cookies in the house..Why set yourself up? Hope this helps.....It took me years to realize and accept that certain foods are triggers for me......

JENNILACEY is absolutely right. Binging happens for a reason. If you aren't eating enough, or aren't getting the right nutrients in your foods, your brain will hijack your body...and you will grab that ice cream.

Your brain is protecting you. It's trying to save you from starving.

So today, focus on eating nutrient dense foods. Make sure to find balance. When you start to feel a craving, examine it. Often a craving for something sweet is our body's way of saying it needs more carbs. A craving for a cheeseburger might be your body communicating a need for more protein.

Your body isn't your enemy. Learn to hear the messages your body is sending you and you'll be fine.

It happens to a lot of us. Have you considered following Sparks meal plan until you get a set routine? You could aim for more nutritious whole foods as Jenni suggested. You will be shocked how much better you will feel. I too like my glass of wine at night. But I knew I had to lay of the wine to loose the weight . I would get ice cream out of the house. It does not mean you won't have it again, its just on hold for a little while. You really will feel better.

Dear TIME_2_LOSE_27,

Take a deep breath and tell yourself that you just took a step back and now you can take two steps forward by following your SparkPeople nutrition and workout plan! You're not alone in this! I've been in the same situation millions of times and my best way to cope with the guilt and disappointment is - DO NOT PUNISH YOURSELF when your body and mind need comfort and encouragement.

Well, no wonder! You must be starving. It appears according to your nutrition tracker that the day before you only ate 1200 cals and a good portion of those calories came from alcoholic beverages. You seem to have a similar pattern through the week. Low calorie days combined with alcohol followed by high calorie days where binge eating occurs. The vast majority of your calories seem to come from nutritionally devoid foods and beverages. This will leave you hungry and weak to indulgences.

If you focus your calories on whole, nutrient-dense foods; lots of veg, fruit, legumes/lentils, whole grains, low fat dairy, healthy fats and lean protein and cut out the alcohol and limit those treats to 1 a day, I promise you will be far less likely to have these binging episodes.

TIME_2_LOSE_27,

Take a deep breathe ! Everything is going to be okay. Eating a half gallon of ice cream does NOT make you a bad person !! Every single person here on SP has done the same thing. You're not alone.

I give all new members one piece of advice and it's this,"Don't look at good health or weight loss with an all or nothing mentality". if the only healthy thing you did for yourself today was drink 8 glasses of water, that's still a step in the right direction. Remember, you're trying to change habits learned over a life time. That's not going to happen overnight, a week, a month or even a year. Change takes time, thus the need to be patient with yourself and your body.

Spark People encourages all its members to start with some simple changes first. Don't try to do everything at once or you will end up frustrated. Set some simple goals. Example, if you're not eat 6-9 servings of fresh fruit and veggies, set a goal to eat 2-3 servings each day for one week. if you're not drinking 8 glasses of water, set a goal to drink 2-4 glasses each day for one week. If you're not exercising, don't try to do an hour a day, set a goal to take a 30 minute walk each day for one week. Once you achieve these goals, then you set new ones.

One small change CAN change your life !! Why would you gain 5 pounds ? Ever notice your weight goes up during TOM ? Most women tend to "gain" weight during their menstrual cycle. Is that a fat gain ? Nope. it's nothing more than a temporary water weight gain that passes in a few days. I can easily gain or lose as much as 3-4 pounds in a day because of a shift in my water weight.

In short, don't beat yourself up. Unless you ate 17,500+ calories on top of your weekly intake, you did not gain five pounds of fat. one pound of fat = 3,500 calories. So, while you did eat too much ice cream, you didn't eat enough of it to gain 5 pounds of fat.

Take things slowly. You can regain your health, but you must be reasonable as well as practical. No one ever became a healthy eater overnight. Thus the need for patience.

Be kind to yourself and to others.

You're not alone, binging is a common problem. Do you know what was bothering you that led you to the binge? Check out some of Sparkpeople's articles on binging and emotional eating, they are helpful, perhaps even post them in significant places, like on the fridge, or right on the icecream container. Whatever you do, forgive yourself, and just get back on track, if you fall off again, get right back up. Ultimately, losing weight and developing a healthy lifestyle is like riding a bicycle, some people fall off more than others, but we can learn to ride if we persist. emoticon
