Very unprofessional, she should have focused on the pet. I'm sure you already knew your health risks, and the fact that you're posting here implies that you are intending to work towards improving your health. All the best, we're here to support you on your journey to health...prove the vet wrong!

Well, last time I checked, we're *all* going to die.... eventually.... of something.

I do hope that you told your vet that just because she had a major surgery and lost weight, it's still not going to make her immortal!

As for it scaring you, I think it's possible that you've had your health issues in the back of your mind for quite some time and this comment just brought it up to the front of your thoughts. I applaud the idea that you consider it as being helpful (rude and blunt, but helpful) and use it to spur you back on the road to being healthier.

The source of inspiration doesn't matter - what matters is what you do with it.

Good luck on your path to a healthier you who has many, many years yet to spend with the grandkid(s)!

Afraid of a colonoscopy? Believe me - they are much less frightening than surgery and chemotherapy.

Colonoscopies allow polyps to be removed before they can become cancer, or let cancers be found before they are too widespread. If you are 50 or older, or have any symptoms, please don't let fear stop you from covering your butt.

Get checked!

At first I thought "am I reading this right? The VET told her she was going to die?"

That was uncalled for, and inappropriate, and big hugs for you. She had no right to say that to you and I would be finding another vet ASAP. As someone else said, she probably thought (in a weird way) that she would help "light a fire" under you and that "if I can do it, so can you", but NO ONE should make unsolicited comments about your weight unless you are under their medical care.

Do something everyday that your future self will thank you for.

Redmountain,

It would seem that this was a blunt, thoughtless comment by your vet; Interesting that a person who underwent surgical intervention to get their weignt under control would show such a lack of thoughtfulness before opening their mouth.

That being said, I hope you can get past this and try to work toward a more healthy lifestyle. I know its not easy. Been diabetic and on insulin since I was 5 years old and have had up and downs with it....

I encourage you to make a way for yourself to improve your health. We all need to do it.... emoticon

I agree with other posters that unsolicited advice is not always welcome! But, when I try to look at the glass half full view whenever I feel something is not right or fair.

So in this case, let's assume regardless of the delivery that she told you because she cares about you and wants to spur you to make positive changes? :-) It is up to you what you do with the information.

It is absolutely the truth that all of us who are morbidly obese are shortening our lives and stressing our organs and joints. We know it. We don't LIKE it. We know we need to lose but many overweight people became so from emotional eating. Losing is easier said than done.

Are you up to the hard work? I am! Let's do it, and continue to use Spark to help us in our journeys.

Is it tomorrow already?

I just wanted to agree with all of the wise posts here and offer you my support.
Your journey is your own, and the advice was unsolicited.
Here's hoping that you find what works for you!

Some people think that because they've been "in your boat", they can be "straight forward" with you. I'm sorry, but I don't care whether you've lost a million pounds, you don't get to tell me about MY weight! OKAY???!!!

This vet clearly felt that she had the right to make that comment, but she did not. I had a medical aid health assessment done in January. The nurse told me that I need to see a doctor about my high cholesterol or I needed to get my affairs in order. I'm 35! People think they're being helpful, but they're actually just being dooshbags.

And that nurse's comments didn't even make me go see a doctor anyway! So what good did her hurtful comment do?! Until you're mentally and emotionally ready and prepared for the physical battle of weight loss, no "tough love" is ever going to push you over the edge!

Just ignore her comments and stick to your plan. You KNOW what you need to do and you're getting there. YES, your health will improve if you lose weight and YES so will your quality of life. So use those positives to drive you forward instead of dwelling on negative dooshbaggy comments.

BIG HUG!!!!!

REDMOUNTAIN,

I'm sorry that your VET treated you so unprofessionally. I'm sure they thought they were trying to be helpful, but it's not their responsibility. Their responsibility is to take care of your pet.

Our weight loss journeys are very personal. Many would have criticized your vet for getting a gastric bypass. Why didn't they lose the weight on their own ? People in glass houses should not throw stones. When we decide to lose weight is OUR decision, not theirs.

So, I'm sorry you were treated so rudely.

Hi Redmountain

The vet had absolutely no right to say that to you. You took your dog for help, not yourself.

However, that said, I think you've already made a decision to take yourself in hand, lose the weight and get healthy otherwise you wouldn't be on this site.

So - you can forget what she said and let it go, or you can be angry and smoulder, or you can use it to spur you on to greater efforts and prove her wrong. My guess is that you're enough of a fighter to prove her wrong. After all, you look like a very nice lady so it would be good to have you around for another 50 years or so.

I am sorry that someone has said this to you. It is very unfortunate that she chose those words. IF she felt she had to say anything, it may have been better to say that it complicated and compromised your health.

I wonder if she was so blunt because she thought that that type of comment would be a wake-up call for you to drop the weight. Still, that having been said, I would have been devastated if someone said that to me, too!

HUGS,
Kris

My dog developed diabetes and I took him to the vet. The vet had gastric bypass and is slender and lost lots of weight, along with no more diabetes or high blood pressure.

I have diabetes and high blood pressure. She told me unless I lose weight, I am going to die. She is an animal doctor, not a human doctor, but she scared me. I am 100 pounds overweight and diabetic, high blood pressure.

I know if I lose the weight my health will improve, but to be told bluntly by someone you are going to die is disconcerting. I do know this weight will shorten my life.

The journey of 1000 miles starts with a single step.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.

Let go and let God.
