Caffeine can cause palpitations even when you have tolerated it in then past. Also iron deficiency can cause them. Def get it checked for peace of mind :)

I'm a family doctor. There are many reasons for palpitations, many benign. I agree with the other comments. In addition to coffee, some over the counter medications including allergy medications can cause palpitations as can stress and lack of sleep. I'm sure your doctor will figure it out quickly for you!

IN the meantime, cut back on or eliminate caffiene which can cause palpitations.

You can also get palpitations from other causes like thyroid problems so try not to stress.

Unfortunately my grandfather on my mother's side of the family passed away from a heart condition. I have noticed palpitations for years and it just irritates me. I WANT to be able to push myself harder, but I guess until I see a doctor I should slow down a bit *sigh* Thanks so much for your reply!

Hi,

SparkPeople guidelines state that you should see a physician if you are experiencing any heart/chest pain while exercising and also if you have heart irregularities during exercise: www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness_artic

JESSH0404,

I definitely don't want to scare you, but even at your young age, it's not out of the realm of possibility to have a heart condition. It's rare, but it does happen. Do you have any medical history of heart conditions on either sign of your family ? If your parents, grand parents or any aunts/uncles have heart condition, you too could have inherited it.

Even if your family did have a history of heart problems, if you take care of yourself, it doesn't mean you'll have them too. Environmental conditions (what we eat, how much we exercise, how much pollution we're exposed too, if we smoke) factor in too.

However, if you've been taking care of yourself and you get regular checkups, I'm sure you'll be fine. Just try to be mindful, that's all. If you feel some discomfort whenever you exercise, it's time to slow down. You don't have to kill yourself with high intensity exercise to be fit or be healthy. Moderation goes a long way.

Try not to worry. I've had a heart murmur for years. In fact, my doctor says my heart is so strong now from the regular exercise that he can barely hear the murmur.

I have recently had some palpitations and pain in my chest while exercising, not extreme, but noticeable pain. I had a check up a while ago and the doctor mentioned my heart rate was a little low, but he said that's normal in active, healthy people. It could also be a sign of a heart problem... I know I need to see a doctor, but I just wanted a little feedback before I start freaking out lol.. I'm only 26!
