I am certainly no stranger to this problem. My Psychologist told me that if after 1/2 hr of going to bed I can't sleep, to get up and leave the bedroom. I ended up playing cards until I could barely see and then went off to bed. It often helped me to get to sleep.
Others may have a diary that they keep by their bed. If it is stress/worry, and they can't sleep, then the idea is that you write down what is worrying you, then put it down and turn the light off. The idea behind this is that sometimes by doing this you stop worrying because it is written down so you won't forget when you wake. Another reason is that it can be therapeutic if there is some emotional baggage.
Sometimes I come onto SP to take my mind of the negatives that are bothering me. I go to the various message boards or read articles. It helps to take my mind off whatever the problem is with me, and it ends up that I am so tired I HAVE to go to bed and fall asleep.
Sometimes having a cup of warm milk with a little cinnamon sprinkled on top helps to induce sleep. Other foods such as yoghurt or banana also have the same qualities.
I hope that you find whatever works for you, and that you managed the day o.k.
