CARRIE_BETH,
I can assure you that four pound "gain" wasn't because you eat too much on Superbowl Sunday. One less than perfect day or even week of eating WILL NOT make or break your healthy lifestyle.
As I mentioned to the OP, in order to truly gain four pounds of fat would have required you to have eaten an extra 14,000 calories on top of your normal intake. So, if you know you didn't eat that much food, then you know you didn't gain fat.
Why did you gain weight ? As mentioned in my previous reply, it's nothing more than water retention. If you ate salty foods like chips/dip, you're retaining water. I can easily gain or lose as much as 3-4 pounds in a day because of water loss or retention.
Don't tie your emotions to the scale. This is a temporary water weight gain, nothing more. Remember, there is more to good health than a number that stares at us from between our toes in the morning.

Hi Carrie, Why are you eating so little? SparkPeople's program does not recommend any member consume less than 1200 calories a day and this is for those who do not have a lot of weight to lose and live a sedentary life. Remember you cannot rush the weight loss process or your body will begin to do whatever it has to do to survive. Below is a link to a dailySpark blog SparkPeople's Coach Tanya wrote which I think may help you have a better understanding as to the process of weight loss and the need to eat. www.dailyspark.com/blog.asp?post=one_step_ closer_dont_be_a_dry_spongeCoach Nancy

JAMESU2 and APRILLPHILLIPS,
What you're experiencing is perfectly normal. It's nothing more than a temporary water weight gain. Ever notice your weight goes up during TOM ? Most women tend to "gain" weight during their menstrual cycles. Is that a fat gain ? Nope. it's nothing more than a temporary water weight gain that passes in a few days. During my cycle, I can gain as much as 5-7 pounds in a week.
I don't let that upset me anymore because I know it's nothing more than water retention. There are many different reasons the scale can go up and that doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong.
People don't gain two pounds of fat overnight. That would require that they ate at least 10,000+ calories in a day !! one pound of fat = 3,500 calories.
And well, not to get TMI, but did you have a bowel movement this morning ? Your body's waste products have weight. So, if you don't do a poop in the morning, the physical weight of all the food you ate the day before is still in your intestines. Don't believe doing a poop can have that big an impact on the scale ? I can prove it.
One morning, for scientific purposes, weigh yourself BEFORE you go to the bathroom. Do your business, then weigh yourself immediately afterwards. Did you lose weight ? YES. did you lose fat ? NOPE.
It's a water fluctuation. Perfectly normal. Remember, there is more to good health than a number that stares at us from between our toes in the morning.

Jami,
If you can surrender the power of the scale and the number and focus on making healthy lifestyle changes, the weight will come off. But when we become overly concerned with the number on the scale, it keeps us trapped in a diet mentality. The number means nothing, except what you weigh at that moment in time. It cannot and will not ever measure your health or fitness nor will it ever define you. Try focusing on things you can control--how much water you drink, how many veggies and fruits you eat, how many minutes you exercise per day. When you start ticking those goals off, the weight should follow.
Hang in there!
