The single greatest thing that I have done for my arthritis pain is get active. By moving more, my joints are hurting *less* and I am much less stiff and sore in the mornings. My hip pain is mostly gone, and now I just deal with my hands... that's where I got it first, and I figure I'll always hurt there.

I ted on this journey because of arthritis pain. I could barely walk. I had to hold on to the bannister and take the stairs one at a time, like a baby. I knew that I needed surgery so I wanted to build up the muscles surrounding my knee as much as possible before surgery. I started using a stationary bike. For the first week, I had to push to get in 20 minutes. By the end of that week I could go without aspirin (about the only pharmaceutical I ever take). After 2 months the pain was gone. I now am down 85# and have NO knee pain. One herbal that others have not mentioned for pain relief is ginger. An herbal tea that I make for friends and family with arthritis is 2 parts peppermint:1 part each horsetail fern, Stinging Nettle, Licorice Root and Ginger. Steep for 20 minutes; take 3 times daily.

Only thing that worked for me was listening to my doctor -loss weight and feel improvements. "The less weight the joint has to carry, the less painful activities will be". This means that 15 pounds of extra body weight is felt by the knees as an extra 45 pounds. No spise ever delivered the results my doctor promised me would and did happen..

I am new here, I suffer from ankle pain, have had it xrayed and just told it is arthiritus. Does anyone else suffer from this, and if so is there anything to eat that could help the pain, only have it in my right ankle, although I am stiff if sit too long. Of course I will be 82 in August so a lot of this can be expected. Thanks so much Marsha

Turmeric has long been associated with its healing properties.
Joint pain is caused by inflammation...avoiding sugar will help you reduce joint pain greatly. Avoid nitrites and nitrates. Wheat and other grains containing gluten. MSG and soft drinks. Coffee is highly inflammatory and contributes to joint pain...so avoid inflammatory foods that make the pain worse.
Dr. Andrew Weil recommends turmeric for inflammatory conditions and says it contains more than 24 compounds that fight inflammation in the body. The University of Maryland Medical Center and the NIH say evidence has shown turmeric might lower levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol. This can prevent the buildup of plaque in the artery walls, known as atherosclerosis.
Rosemary This spice promotes enegry by boosting circulation and aids in speeding up digestion. Rosemary can also reduce inflamation.
There are many herbs and spice including cinnamon, cayenne pepper, mint, rosemary, thyme, oregano, and sage that have beneficial anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger, tumeric, garlic, and cardamom also have powerful anti-inflammatory effects. Some herbs and spices can be as effective as medication in quieting the body's inflammatory response.

Studies have shown that spices can and do have many health benefits. However, I doubt that eating turmeric with your meals will eliminate arthritis pain. It may help once in a while, but not on a regular basis. Consider that the people of India eat a variety of spices in their meals including turmeric. They've been doing that for centuries. And they still suffer arthritis pain.
