Job number one is taking care of yourself and getting well. Exercise places stress on your body and prevents you from getting well. I know your pain as I just had a horrible case of viral bronchitis, which aggravated my mild asthma. I was a total mess for about three weeks! I was like you at first and just tried to push through it. Then I took a few rest days, went out and ran 4 miles and was back to square one. I literally had to take 9 days off completely and am now just slowly easing back into my routine. And, to be honest, I really think my body needed the rest all around after months of pretty intense training. Sometimes trying to push through it just prolongs the sickness. Listen to your body -- an your doctor.

And, it doesn't need to mean any weight gain. I actually ended up losing three pounds during my illness (not water because it's not fluctuating). Just remember to adjust your calorie intake in line with a reduced calorie expenditure. Listen to your body. My appetite was a good guide and did decrease during my recuperation. As soon as you feel better a few days in a row, you could try some moderate activity and perhaps wait a bit before taxing your body with an all-out effort.

I just went through this last week. It sucks! I started to panic when I gained three pounds, but it turned out it was just water weight from all the fluids I was taking in. It's gone & I'm back on track this week. You will be too soon, so just give yourself permission to rest & get better. :-)

NMWELSH,

You will NOT derail any of your efforts at good health or weight loss because you can't exercise for a few days. Take care of yourself first. Give your body time to get over this sinus infection. Can you exercise ? Sure and you've seen what happens. You feel worse !! take a few days to get over this cold/flu. get some rest. push those fluids. lay off any exercise.

The fact is, doing more exercise will not speed up your weight loss. You didn't gain the weight overnight. it's not coming off overnight. So, don't beat yourself up because you haven't seen a change in the scale in the last three weeks. That really is perfectly normal. Right now, your body may be retaining fluid because of the sinus infection. Once you get better, your body will release that excess fluid. You'll probably see a loss on the scale in a few days.

But you have to be patient with your body and yourself !!! Remember, weight loss is a slow steady process that takes time.

Hi - while you are unwell isn't the time to be focusing so much on weight-loss. Going for a 15 minute walk - o.k. but a hard-out game of volleyball???? I would be giving that one a miss.

Weight fluctuates constantly on most people and can easily fluctuate that amount. In my case it could be in one day. There are tons of variables responsible for it.

When you are well, just concentrate on eating healthy, eating enough calories for the exercise you do (a lot of people actually UNDEReat), getting good hydration, especially with some water, and getting in plenty of fruit/veges as well as wholegrains and good protein. If you do this, then the rest will follow. There is no hard-and-fast rule as to what shows first, but a lot notice that their clothes start fitting better, much earlier than the scales start shifting regularly.

Hang in there, and remember, so long as you are doing o.k. with exercise/nutrition then the rest will follow :-)

Happens to us all, don't let it get to you!

I will be thinner and healthier if it kills me. We don't say diet in our house-ever. Diets fail!

I went to Doctor's yesterday for sinus stuff! But I have been down for a couple of days leading into it. I tried to sweat it out on Monday, by playing my normal 2 hours of volleyball, but it didn't go away. I was worse on Tuesday. I went to doctor, then to 1 hour of volleyball. I never learn. Today I felt like death warmed over.

Doesn't help that I have pretty much fluctuated weight wise for the whole 3 weeks. I am down 8 pounds, but can't seem to breach the next plateau, and being sick didn't help!
