Well what a nightmare this has been!

Thanks to everyone who came by and wished me well.

It turns out that I had developed a serious infection in my jaw bone underneath the tooth that was root canaled. One entire side of my face swelled up and i almost ended up hospitalized. I am on two antibiotics right now and a LOT of pain medicine which is helping some but not a lot with the pain. It is getting better though.

I will wind up having my gums opened and my jaw bone scraped underneath to remove dead bone tissue, and I'll have to stay on antibiotics for 8 weeks straight afterwards to be sure all of the infection was gone.

I was told this could have killed me if the infection had gone to my brain. So I'm glad it's getting better.

Thanks to all and I will keep you all updated.

If it still bothers you, call the dentist up and ask about it. When my husband had a similar problem, he had to have the root canal "fixed" because they missed a spot. The whole point with a root canal is to remove the root. No root = no pain. Little bits of leftover root = really bad pain.

I recently had an abscessed tooth, which is an infection on the inside of your tooth and happens quite often after a root canal. My suggestions are:

1. Warm salt water rinse.
2. Take a dry tea bag (any kind of tea) and put it in your mouth next to the tooth, or on top and bite down to hold it, that is hurting for a least 30 min of not longer.

Hope you feel better :)

Wow, my bad times ten. Medicine didn't even register in my mind; I wasn't thinking of what was already being used, just what could be done by itself.

So yeah, pretend my last post never happened XD

Alcohol + Vicodin = VERY bad idea. What about a topical oral anesthetic? I'm thinking something like Lidocaine may help, although I am not sure if it's safe for the mouth. It might be worth an inquiry.

I don't have experience with root canals, but would alcohol help? Maybe it can numb away some of the pain.

Cat,

I think you are so right...there is not a pain as painful as a toothache. I am so sorry you are not feeling well. This is just a few days out of a lifetime of healthy living, so allow this time for your body to heal and know that when you feel better, you will be back in the game. I hope you feel better soon!

I had two root canals done yesterday at the dentist.

He told me that I "shouldn't have any pain" afterwards other than some minor soreness.

One of the molars he Root Canaled has been SCREAMING ever since the Novocaine wore off. It's really making me CRAZY. Honestly is there anything worse than tooth pain?? I think not. Even when I broke my arm and had surgery to insert a plate and 6 screws I didn't have this much pain!

I finally broke down and called his office today and he gave me a prescription for Vicodin and Pennicillin. Unfortunately the vicodin really only works for an hour or so and then I'm back in pain all over again.

This has had a serious effect on my eating and exercise. Just walking around the house makes it throb more in my mouth, and I'm having a hard time finding foods I can eat without wanting to cry.

I guess I'm kind of afraid that this is going to have a negative impact on my weight loss. My attitude is the pits right now because I'm in constant pain, and not being able to exercise or eat my usual healthy foods has me stressed out too..

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Cat
