It gives me motivation because I don't have as far as they do to go. It's like if they can get where they want to be why can't I? Anyone losing any weight/getting fit/living a healthy lifestyle is a role model.
It comes down to a simple question: What do you want out of life, and what are you willing to do to get it?

Extreme Weight Loss does cover an entire year in the hour and does show challenges and issues and how they are resolved/addressed. I love seeing people transformed to the healthiest happiest they can be. It certainly inspires me to never let myself go.

If you find that the show inspires you to eat better (and maybe start exercising), then why not enjoy? Sounds like you understand that it's TV and there's some "TV magic" involved -- you know that months of work is being condensed into an hour show, and that you can't similarly "fast forward" through your own journey. You'll actually have to walk through that in real time -- but maybe it'll help you understand that all those small steps along the way can add up pretty dramatically over time!
I think all "success stories" are kind of both encouraging and "diet porn," in a way -- I've read many over the years, and heaven knows most of the time they were wishful thinking about what I might do "someday." In that way, they were "diet porn" to me, but maybe inspired someone else to actually do something. Sometime though, certain stories started to "click" with me and actually inspired me to actually do something.
This time it was actually some weight maintenance bloggers that gave me the courage to try again. I once before lost 100 pounds but did NOT manage to keep it off, and so was convinced it was not possible to maintain, even if I could lose weight again. That was until I saw some real people doing it -- not always perfectly, but actually doing it. That inspired me to lose, and then find a way to maintain, which will be a life-long effort, but so far has been very much worth it.
So DW and I have been watching DVR'd shows of "Extreme WeightLoss". For any of you that haven't seen it, it is kind of like "The Biggest Loser" without the competition part.
Many of the same Dramatic Aspects such as the randomized scale reading, the commercial Cliffhangers and the shirtless before pics followed by the shirted afters...It does seem to me to be a healthier version of the over-the-top weightloss genre with the subjects spending only 3 months in the controlled environment followed by 9 at home. They actually address the excess skin thing...
We watched an episode last night and I have to admit, I am more motivated to eat right today (we will see about the exercise part). What do you all think? Is this kind of show encouraging to you, or is discouraging to see these people radically transform over the course of 60 minutes when you have to work hard at it every day for years after year?
