To those who have been here a while and those who are just finding this site, congratulations, because every step, whether a baby step or a leap towards regaining your health, confidence, self love is the right direction. This journey has been an emotional roller coaster worth every struggle and success. I keep fighting to hit that goal line, always just within reach, but never quite getting there, or going under and right back above. At this point for me, it is not the number on the scale anymore, although I will always rely on the scales to keep me grounded. I am loving reading about all of you and I am so thankful that you are will to share. Sometimes just putting it out there begins burning that spark a little brighter! Happy sparking and happy new year, 2014!!

My moment was last week when we were discussing Christmas gifts and my sister told me not to be upset about what she was giving me but it was a 1X and she tried it on and it wasn't too big on her. I will never wear a 1X and the item is going right back to the store. I joined WW online on Monday and doing fine with it so far. I'm actually enjoying counting the points. Right now, I'm trying to figure on what I can eat as I'm a bit hungry. How about a glass of warm milk? That will work. And then I'm heading off to the sewing machine to push some fabric through it.

Pursue the things that make you feel alive and fill you with joy and balance.!

After realizing that my 10 lb weight gain is a reflection of my mind and habits and a heathy body reflects a healthy life outlook and lifestyle. i had to get real with myself and realize where my mind was really at. Realizing that ignited my fuel to work on deeper things such and my outlook and values when it come to nutrition and fitness.

A few nights ago I was watching TV with my kids and a commercial came on for an exercise machine. The women in the commercial were giving testimonials about how they lost "x" lbs using the machine and they showed their before and after pictures. My daughter said to me, "Mommy, you should get that." It took me aback because she is 6 and I didn't think she noticed how heavy I am. I asked her if she thought I should lose weight and she nodded her head.

Ironically, it was wanting to avoid her ever thinking that which motivated me to get serious about losing weight at the end of 2008. My daughter had just turned 1, and I was still 30-40 lbs above where I should be despite having a whole year to lose the baby weight. I decided I never wanted her to see me as a fat mom or be embarrassed of me, and I wanted to set a good example, and in 2009 I lost 40 lbs. Now I have 80 to lose. I have been wallowing about that for awhile, and it has gotten me nowhere. Time to make it happen in 2014.

I didn't have any : )
I was content with my mildly overweight body when I came across "The Spark" in e-book and it told me I could change my lifestyle with the 28 day program... then I checked out the website and registered, and it told me I could reach my goal weight in 3 months!
And it gave me a goal weight that was realistic but somehow I never thought I could reach it.
It worked : ))

In November 2012 when my new pain management doctor told be the best thing for Fibromyalgia was exercise and weight loss. I've been going to doctors for Fibromyalgia for 20 years, and had never been told that before. I was actually afraid that exercise would make the pain worse. A-HA - what do you know, I feel much better all the way around!

I had another big one actually ........... my father and all his side of family has had major heart issues forever. My brother was told (6 yrs older than me) that he may need a pacemaker. Both doctors told him it had nothing to do with his being obese that it had everything to do with it being heredity. He has never worked out to make it stronger so that has made it much worse sooner than later.

Since then I have made sure that cardio is a big part of my routine. Not to lose weight, but to keep my heart strong so I can avoid those complications hopefully.

If you don't love yourself....how can you expect others to.

After years of being bigger than all the other women in my family, I finally had my ah-ha moment a few weeks ago when it hit me that I'm a premed student. People are less likely to trust overweight physicians. Besides which, my stress level is only going to go up from here, and the kinds of foods I ate and the little exercise I did would eventually have made it hard to do well academically, too.

I went to a rheumatologist for hip bursitis and he refused to treat me with a cortisone shot because I was 'so fat it would just come right back'. He said, and I quote: you are a hopeless case of morbid obesity and will only lose weight with bariatric surgery. I was stunned and hurt, and so mad that I decided to prove him wrong and started losing weight the next day. It may be slow going, but I am far from a hopeless case!

I started at 333 lbs. Jan. 2010.

A lot of different things. Pictures of myself (I have it posted on my sp page), and being turned down for health insurance for being morbidly obese. Especially burned my hide when they accepted my husbands application and he smoked at the time. emoticon

I knew I was just getting heavier. About 2 weeks ago, I bought some new makeup and was applying it, and I realized that my FACE looked heavier, I almost have a double chin. That helped inspire me a lot. That actually seeing how much I weigh right now.

This is not too hard for me. I can do this.

Like many here, I saw a photo of myself. It's strange how when I looked down at my outfit, I managed to feel like I looked hot (which is a GREAT attitude!), but then seeing what I looked like from a perspective that wasn't my own eyeballs, I saw my body for what it really is: a bit too soft, a bit too round. NO MORE OVEREATING. I look at a plate with 2 eggs now and think, "yummy breakfast!" instead of, "that's NEVER going to be enough." One week from those photos and I already feel like a new woman.

My moment was this past week when I got my pictures back. I am looking for a job and a local college was taking head shots (for LinkedIn and such) and I got the pics emailed to me. All I could see was the double chin, the dimple, and the neck rolls, not to mention my miserable hair style (or lack there of!) Time for a change (and a curling iron!)

My first was when I got a high cholesterol reading and a recommendation to lose weight from my doctor when I was 23.

My second was when my mom had open heart surgery and then turned her life and health around with motivation and diet and exercise.

My third was just realizing how my healthy eating and exercising in front of my daughter has inspired her to want to eat fruits, veggies, and exercise right along with me -- and she's only 3!

My ah-ha moment was when my brother-in-law said to me, "you're the big sister" and the real sad part is my sister was 9 months pregnant at the time and I was still heavier than her. It hurt and he is a jerk, but it hit home with me that it was/is time to make a change. I want to get to a point where I can feel good about my self and not worry about what anyone thinks.

My ah-ha moment was last week when I measured my waist. I realized that I was the biggest I have ever been in my life. It finally struck me that weight wasn't supposed to be my main focus, but my health was. So this is my second week with my new found attitude about health. I have never felt this good. emoticon

On June 1, 2010, I looked in the mirror and hated the bloated, tired person that was looking back at me. Out loud, I said three words, "this is it!"
At 535 pounds I could only stand a few minutes, used a wheel chair outside of my home, felt like I was strangling when sleeping, and eating and drinking at will. I began on my own losing a few pounds, a few weeks later checked into Jenny Craig, where I lost 100 pounds, became ill with a type of inoperable cancer, got sidelined, did not lose or gain. God saw fit to cure me, and I continue cancer free. I checked in at Spark on 10/17/13 at 395 pounds, have lost another
29 pounds bring ing me to a documented loss of 168 pounds. I found SP in a magazine article in a waiting room, with a friend, quite by accident. So, my ah ha moment, was that day in the mirror. And that day in the waiting room. I walk now with a cane, and walker at night.
I will walk into my family Christmas Eve gathering on my own for the first time since 2009.

When I went to the Dr. for a cold and weighed in 18 pounds heavier than I was just a couple of months prior. I'd been gaining slowly, and that gained momentum. I've put on far too much in the past 2 years or so. To be at what SparkPeople calls an acceptable weight I need to lose 50, to be where I remember being, how I was in my prime, the way I still think of myself, it's closer to 100 pounds I need to shed. But it was breaking that 200 pound mark that got my full attention and kicked me into gear. (BTW, this is my first time posting on a SP board, not sure I'm doing it right/that it will show where it's supposed to go. Fingers crossed.)

I just realized one day that I was sick of myself always making excuses why I didn't exercise or eat healthily . . . this was after years of being a virtual couch potato. I always knew that I could change, but didn't have enough motivation. All my previous efforts went nowhere. Finding Sparkpeople was definitely a huge key to my progress so far!

I caught a reflection of myself in a mall window it was awful! I looked awful! I broke down right there and told my son I was fat! and ask him why no one ever told me? and why couldn't I see it before? I was hitting 300 pounds, a diabetic and on 5 blood pressure pills a day ! I pulled myself together and looked at my son and told him his mama was fixing to change that was 17 months ago.... today I am medicine free and 130 pounds lighter and I have made a lifestyle change so I never have to break down after seeing my reflection again.

My ah-ha moment happened earlier this year. I went to this health fair for one of my classes and there was a booth where you could get your blood pressure taken. After he took my blood pressure, he told me that it was a little high for me but it was more normal for someone around his age. He looked like he was 50 or so and I was 18 at the time. It didn't help that one of my friends got hers taken too and it was fine. I really felt ashamed because I never would have guessed I would have gained so much weight over the years.

I just read your blog post and wanted to say congratulations!

My ah-ha moment was more about the reasons WHY I exercise. I've never been overweight but also wasn't committed to my health. As I get older (late 30s now) I've been seeing my weight creep up and didn't want to become overweight like my mom or grandma. I wanted to think about health in a different way -- not something I "should" do so that I lose 10 pounds, but something that is good for me deep down, like why I eat a gluten-free diet. Having that mindset change made all the difference.

In September I attended my high school reunion. It was our 50th and I worked on the planning committee for over a year and a half. I swore that I would lose weight prior to seeing all of my old classmates, but I didn't. When I saw the pictures from that night I was appalled, but I still didn't rush to do anything about it.
In August I had started seeing a new primary care doctor and she told me she wanted me to lose 50 lbs. When I went back to her 3 months later, I had lost one pound. She was not happy. She said my kidney function was not good and that if I couldn't tolerate the new medication she had put me on, I would have to start shots. She referred me to a nutritionist (I was already seeing a diabetes educator) and I was told to get it together.
So, here I am, back where I started in 2009, but for some reason, this time I seem to have a handle on what needs to be done. I certainly hope so.

I think there have been so many over time that they just seemed to pile up eventually till I said okay I'm more than done with being so overweight. Even with about 130lbs to lose I don't have any health related conditions so I don't want to keep pushing my luck as I enter my 50's. Some of the aha's that stick in my mind though are worrying if you can fit in a chair or a booth, never mind carnival rides, having a young child ask you why are you so fat, or when are you having your baby and lastly running out of clothes that fit and having the next step be ordering them online because most stores don't have anything over 3X.

I had a blood test at the dentist before an implant. He said my kidneys were under-functioning, not by just a little. My husband is on dialysis. I don't know if getting healthy helps, but it certainly can't hurt!

My aha moment was when I asked my doctor what I could do about my continuing knee pain two months after surgery. She told me I needed to stop eating inflammatory foods. WHAT? Realizing that my food choices were literally causing my pain was a huge thing for me. Since I started this my knee pain is barely noticeable and my arthritis is GONE.

My "ah-ha" moments was when my sister who has been overweight for several years now and finally lost the weight asked me if I wanted all of her "fat clothes". I've never considered myself "fat" as she put it, just that I could try to be healthier than I am.

I replied on this a few days ago, and it's still been on my mind. I think another "a-ha" moment for me when was I finally accepted that I don't have to be "perfect" to lose weight-that it's all a continuum of choices. If I eat too much, I don't think "well, the whole day is blown now, I might as well go nuts and start again tomorrow." Now, I think, "well, that happened. Next choice needs to be different than THAT one." Realizing that continued effort and consistent effort over time makes changes, not "perfection" forever and ever have given me a lot of peace and patience with myself. I still make mistakes, and big ones, but that doesn't mean I can just give up on the process.

I was 219 in August 2011. I am now 145-135 lbs and seeing if I can go any farther without feeling deprived. As of March, I went from 37% to 19% body fat, dropped from a size 18/20 to a 6/8, lost 38.25 inches all over, and love getting fired up for exercise goals!

Just keep swimming...

At age 66, after a lifetime of being overweight, I was stunned when my doctor told me I am pre-diabetic. At least that information got my attention! For over 20 years, I've exercised 5 days/week for at least an hour, AND I had a very healthy, organic diet, except, to that diet, I added a boatload of sweets and lots of pounds. All my other labs/tests are still perfect, but the blood sugar has to go down. I consider the doctor's news a wake-up call rather than bad news. emoticon

When someone said, "Instead of asking if you had one wish what would it be, we should be asking ourselves what we're willing to fight for." That really hit home for me. Its so solid and real.

There have been a few lately. My mum has a tendency to say things like, 'Try this on - it's enormous on me so it might fit you.' She means well, she doesn't mean anything bad by it; I'm about 2 dress sizes larger than her. However it does get old!

Then a week or so ago I was out partying with my best friend who I haven't seen in months and months. We were walking to a different bar and in her alcohol induced honesty, she pronounced, 'Wow you have big booty!' She weighs about 110 soaking wet I think, and she actually meant it as a compliment (a bit backhanded!) - she 'complains' that she's straight up and down.

I'm tired of the little comments, however innocently they are meant, and I want to be happy with what I see in the mirror instead of trying to hide my worst flaws.

I took a hang gliding intro class. Three students took turns on each glider. I wondered why I'd been put with the two, um, larger students. When I looked at pictures of myself later, I realized that there had been three large students.
Those pics helped me lose 50 pounds. I found that there was no muscle under those pounds, so that's what I'm working on now.

Near the end of August when I got weighed I found I had gained 4.5 lb. in one week. I told myself I had to stop gaining. Since then I have lost 26.5 lb. It wasn't soon enough to stop diabetes. It caught up to me in October. Now my knee problems are worse because of my weight. I plan to keep on losing until I reach my goal. Chair exercises are all I can do right now. Seeing my doctor tomorrow to see what can be done to get me back on my feet.

I had arrived in my apartment after walking up a flight of stairs and was feeling awful--tired with a rapidly beating heart. I thought, "I am on my way to dying a slow, painful death. This stops now." Since that moment in mid-June 2013, I have lost 40 pounds.

I've had several "I need to fix this moments" but never a true Ah-ha moment until recently. I had a baby boy six months ago and I was watching him play and realized I don't play anymore. I come ome and sit and watch tv or take care of him or make dinner. So I decided I would play more we have a Wii and xbox with connect and some fun fitness games so I am starting my days slowly with playing a fitness game in the morning then not having my "daily coffee" it feels great.

Seeing my mom get really sick and end up in the hospital for several reasons, but mostly related to obesity. I did not want to be like her. She and my dad are retired and can't even have any fun as she is sick all the time. That was my ah ha moment.

As silly as this may seem, I went through a terrible breakup (he was perfect and then he cheated on me out of the blue, then told me he wanted to be friends but that he wouldn't stop hooking up with the girl) and while he had always accepted me and my body, I realized that if I wanted someone to love me like that again I needed to learn to love myself first. I've hated my weight since... oh, probably 8th grade, so that was the first step. Started at 175, goal weight of 140, already lost almost 10lbs of it in the first six weeks and I'm gonna have to get pants a size down soon! Next summer I will wear shorts and tank tops and love my body.

If nothing else, I thank him for the wake-up call that I want to love myself. I want to be proud of my body, especially in pictures that show up on Facebook! Right now that's not the case, but I'll get there (and you will too)!

Mine was when I saw a particular photo...

I had been standing next to a woman, a stranger, who was very overweight, and thinking to myself that I felt sorry for her. She looked like she wasn't taking care of herself, and I was glad I wasn't that big and told myself that I looked better in my clothes.

DH happened to snap a photo of me standing next to her, and I was stunned when I saw it. I was EXACTLY the same size as her. Same size, same girth, same impression that here was someone who wasn't taking care of herself.

That was my wake-up call, and that's when I came back to Sparkpeople and got serious about getting back to a healthy and more attractive weight.

I was asked in Costco when I was due. A huge, fat lady questioned when I was due. I didn't eat dinner that night & my diet/weight loss challenge started the next morning.

In a park, in Beijing, I came across a 62 year old man doing muscle ups on an outdoor pull up bar.
I was training martial arts at the time, and I thought I was fit, but this guy was miles ahead of me in pretty much every respect, and without any training equipment.
That day, I discovered the value of virtues such as patience and persistance, and I also found a form of training I could truly enjoy.

My aha moment was two days after finishing grad school in July 2009. I looked down and realized that I couldn't see my feet. While that was Okay when I was pregnant my two children, it was NOT okay after menopause! To this day, whenever I feel discouraged, I look straight down to make sure I can see my feet!

Saturday after Thanksgiving, I forced myself to get a physical. I hadn't been to the doctors for over 3 years; back then they diagnosed me as pre-diabetic and as someone with PCOS. Now my PCOS is out of controll and I'm a type-2 diabetic. The doc gave me metformin, glimeperide and a glucose monitor. I turned back to Sparkpeople for the 3rd time and hopefully I will stick with it.

Going to the doctor after 10 years of avoiding them and having a blood pressure of 210/110. Huge wake up call. Then a few days later getting the news that I have type 2 diabetes. I've been low carb since then and have worked up to about an hour of exercise a day. Thanks to meds my blood pressure is normal - hoping to have it read normal without meds!

What would you attempt, if you knew you could not fail?

I felt pretty tired and lazy. I had trouble putting my shoes on and I knew I gained the weight I had lost without trying. That day I stepped on the scale and saw 291 pounds. Seeing I was so close to 300 and seeing my son feeling lonely with no one to play with hit me pretty hard

You would have THOUGHT it would have been one of these:

- Being asked when my baby was due.
- Told by someone, "I didn't recognize you; you are so fat!"
- Spotting an ex in Trader Joe's and simply leaving my cart & scurrying out so he wouldn't
see me.
- Buying Men's PJ bottoms XXL as they were way more comfortable than regular ladies sizes.
- Having to shop on-line at J. Crew as they don't sell larger sizes in the mall stores.

Jeeze - I could go on.

What finally did it? A horrible, awful photo, placed right in front of me during an orthodontic consultation. I tried covering it w/ my handbag and arms as I couldn't bear to see the shocking evidence. Didn't hear half of what the orthodontist said,

I started the very next meal. Now, I'm normal sized again and have straight teeth.

Funny what finally resonates with us!

My moment came when I asked my doctor about getting weight loss surgery, and he said, "It's a mechanical solution to a psychological problem." My mental response was shock, and because I am a Christian I immediately thought, "Christians shouldn't have psychological problems; they have Jesus." The Bible tells us that, "Jesus is all we need." I firmly believe that.

I went home, prayed, asked for forgiveness and a change of mind about food and exercise.

Since then I have lost almost sixty pounds; I am off insulin; my last HBA1C read non-diabetic; I have more energy than I've had in years, and my bad knees are much better.

Now I eat to be healthy and please the Lord. I exercise a minimum of thirty minutes every day, and I am looking forward to loosing another forty three pounds. emoticon
