I have a friend who swears by Overeaters Anonymous. He said the support and 12 steps are key to not binge eating and abusing food. I have a hard time with "giving things up to a higher power" and his group (the only one close to where I live) seems to be very into religion and the higher power thing. But, it that is something you are into, then I say look for a group like that. It is usually free, or maybe just a donation. You can meet others who abuse food and/or medicate with food. I do both of those things, but feel very out of place with a 12 step group.
I find it hard to go to a therapist for my food addiction. Lots of people don't understand it or don't want to understand, even therapists. If you do want to go to therapy then I would say look for one who works with eating disorders.
I don't know if this helps, but hopefully you will find something that helps you.
Good luck with your journey to self discovery!
