Shygirl-you definitely have a future and I agree with OhSo...about how we are meant to be fit and healthy...
I guess we're not much different from a 'rusty gate'....the more we move or 'open up', the less 'rusty' we are and less 'noise' we make each time we swing open to the possibilities of a healthy, fit life... emoticon

My motivation is how much better I feel when I get regular exercise. When I'm consistent, sitting at my desk all day doesn't make me as stiff, I sleep better, I'm in a better mood, I have more energy, I think more clearly, etc. The biggest motivator is the lack of bone/joint pain I experience when I actually work out. Even though I'm only in my late 20s, I already have pain and stiffness that makes me feel much older if I don't get off my butt and move!

I also got a wake up call. I have lymphedema and was in the hospital for that and they checked my blood sugar. My A1C was 10.5 and my fasting sugar was over 200. I was told I was a full fledged diabetic. I was adopted, so I don't know if this runs in my family, but the way I was eating, I probably did it to my own self. I was told years before I was hypoglycemic, so I took it for granted that if my sugar was too low, there was no way it would ever go the other way. Boy, was I wrong.

I am thankful for this wake up call. I took sugar and white flour completely out of my diet. The side effects of stroke, pancreas problems and possible amputations scared me. I have dropped 85 pounds since Feb. I was at 400 pounds. My weight has stalled, but I'm just now getting in the exercise routine now that I can actually get off the couch and move.

So my motivation? Feeling the way I do now and actually having a future to look forward to.

Motivation started from a desire to become healthy, fit and strong. Feeling better, energized and seeing results in myself and others keeps me motivated. Changing up the routine and setting new goals help when things become routine. Love reading everyone's response... great post :)

At the start my motivation was fueled from within. While I still see that motivation peeking out every now and then, it really motivates me to see the success of others here on SP that keep pushing to their goals! I am a very goal-oriented person, so I continue to tweak my goals to make sure they are what I really want to work toward. I set good rewards for reaching them as well!

the posts here are motivational in and of themselves...sage advice, life experiences, health scares and the self-satisfaction from being conscious of our health is great....I also think that like one of the posters stated, to view exercise not a means to and 'end result', but rather as an experience to be enjoyed and delight in is refreshing.. emoticon

My motivation comes from , my family and friends plus the fact that I want to get healthy to continue doing the things I love such as biking, kayaking, walking, going to amusement parks.

How simply amazing I feel! I have more energy to try new things. I enjoy who I see in the mirror everday which translates into standing taller and feeling so proud of myself. I did this! That's the best constant motivation.

my motivation comes from feeling great - I was 43, obese and feeling like crap all day long. I felt 20 years older than my age - and now I feel my age again. Definitely not willing to let that go!

From finally having "Will Power"... Right now as I write, there are two boxes of Dunkin Munchkins on the counter, a few feet from my desk, and I don't even touch them. Instead I had a banana, and water... I work to hard, and discipline does pay off:}

The mirror, my closet, and compliments - from friends, co-workers and strangers. I FINALLY like my own reflection and even my shadow. My motivation is being proud of being ME.

KRichards6- I'm sorry that you had to go through the fear of the health issues, but I love your attitude about it. Many of us should learn from your example! If we all looked at eating right and exercising as a positive in itself, instead of just something to endure in order to get to the results we want, I think we would have much better success. I know I would! Thank you for sharing your story, I know it will help me, and probably many others as well!

Wanting to be heart healthy. A co-worker, only a few years older than me, had a heart attack a few months ago. She's ok now, but it was a big wake up call.

Never let success go to your head, and never let failure go to your heart.

Make time, or make excuses. The choice is yours.

Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.

I got my motivation the hard way, during my last checkup 3 weeks ago. My doctor told me that my triglycerides were high, which is related to blood sugar. I was verging on becoming diabetic, which runs in my immediate family. My cholesterol was also too high, and I already take cholesterol medication. I was given a triple whammy when my cardiogram showed changes to my heart. Add to this that I'm about 65 lbs.overweight,

This was a total wake up call to make real and permanent dietary changes and get into an exercise program..

Not only do I have to cut calories, but everything I eat has to improve my health. It's funny when you're adjusting your diet for reasons of survival. I don't find unhealthy foods tempting any more. They're poison for me, so I can't eat them at all. And it doesn't bother me.

I always struggled with my sweet tooth, but now it's not an issue.

As much as my last exam gave me bad, scary news, I'm also grateful for it. I know that if my doctor simply told me as she always does to lose weight and exercise, I would have returned to my next exam with another 10 lbs. and totally out of shape. But this time I got scared straight. I consider healthy eating and working out as a gift to my body and mind, and no longer a deprivation or something to endure.

TravelGirl, I like your visualizations...putting yourself in the kayak, on the plane, hiking...makes what you doing in the present seem purposeful and makes your time go faster, too...

sometimes, for me, my motivation just comes from being too stubborn to quit or admit I can't do something!

Holding an image of the perfect trip - where I get to bike, and kayak, and walk all over without having to quit early because I'm too tired, and not get horrified looks because of my size!

I love the idea of going on that trip! I love the idea of sitting on the plane and not worrying whether or not my hips are squeezing into the person next to me.

Those images - those are keeping me going!! When I'm not carried by the idea of getting extra oomph in my step and not sure whether I'm really getting anywhere - those are the images that carry me through.

two places. Firstly, from beginning to feel more energy just by eating 5 fruits/veggies a day and drinking my water. Secondly, from learning how to make fitness choices because I love myself, not because I despise myself. Unfortunately this is a new idea for me. My Mom was always very supportive and non-critical of me growing up, but she was extremely hard on herself. I realized I picked up on this habit and I don't want my daughter to do the same. If she sees me making healthy choices because I love myself, she will learn to love herself too. This is the most important thing to me.

My motivation comes from watching both my mother and grandmother perish from being over weight and complications with diabetes and cancers. I watched my grandmother give herself insulin injections three times a day and I decided way back then that I did not want to go through that. So I have been doubling my efforts to loose the weight and stay off the insulin. Plus, I want to live long enough to see my grandchildren go to college, start great careers and then start their own families.

You have to take care of your health first. If you don't, you will not be able to help anyone else. Also, stop being hard on yourself because no one is perfect. We all are doing the best that we can from day to day. If possible, when you are feeling frustrated, try to go for a 10-15 minute walk. This can help relieve your stress as well as provide some motivation to keep active. As mentioned in the post by KELAN5, you would be doing something wonderful and good for yourself! emoticon

My motivation comes from a number of different places. At first it came from my desire to feel better. That is still a driving factor, but I had no idea HOW MUCH better I would feel! In the morning I look forward to my walk on the treadmill excited to watch the next episode of one of my favorite shows. This helps my mental health and stress level tremendously as I am no longer working on an assignment or last-minute work in the mornings-- I am doing something wonderful for myself! This week my motivation comes from looking pretty darn good in a v-neck T-shirt from the Misses section. Not having been able to shop in those sizes in over 10 years, it felt like an incredible accomplishment! Going into the same dressing rooms where only a few months ago I was cringing to see my arms under the bright lights, I actually looked at myself with satisfaction. I still have a very long way to go, but I am excited to get there. Another bonus-- this week I FINALLY feel like my appetite is under control. I'm getting full on a lot less. Hooray!!! This is really helping with my motivation, too!

I find this so difficult now that the kids have grown, working full time and taking care of my mom while still trying to do things for myself. At the end of the evening that ice cream or the cookies just call me.
How do do get the strength to not eat when you feel frustrated , pulled by so many directions and yet not able to do anything right for anyone.

My motivation comes from myself. I started this journey when I realized that I have complete control over my weight, and from that point forward I look to myself to keep going. I control what I eat, and how much I exercise, so I can give myself 100% credit for my success so far emoticon

It's nice to know that I can accomplish something by just relying on myself - it's very empowering.

Today what motivates me is the subtle mind changes that are taking place-forming healthy habits like tracking, forces me to be accountable, yet because I am, I have tangible evidence of my efforts, and maybe, must maybe, either the scale or my clothes will be proof that diligence pays off!
I'm motivated by the hope of a new day-a new chance that I do have the power within me to change... emoticon

I track everything that goes into my mouth. I'm motivated by seeing that I'm staying within my calorie range. AND, because I stay within my calorie range I lose weight therefore, I look better each passing week. This is short term and long term motivation.

My motivation comes from wanting to be healthy again, both physically and mentally. For years I have compared myself to thinner girls and it has taken a toll on me inside. I want to feel good about my body. I want to treat it better. And I want to be able to run and play with my daughter.
