Walk every day (or almost every day), and gradually add distance/speed.
Get a healthy cookbook and explore the SparkRecipes and make one or two new recipes every week.
Track your food, activity, water, and other goals.
Ditch the "all or nothing" mentality.
Ditch the "diet" mentality.
Love yourself at every size.

Remember that a true healthy lifestyle change is a culmination of all the little things you do. So start small.

For example, set a goal to exercise for at least 10 minutes a day. Often, getting started is the hardest part, so give yourself permission to stop after 10 minutes if you really want to. Chances are, you won't.

Start by trying to get 2-3 servings of freggies a day. When you've done that for a week straight, make it 3-5, and keep going like that.

Same with water. 3-4 servings a day for a week, then increase it. emoticon

Thanks for a great idea. Struggling with eating but mainly with diet soda consumption. Will try the "adding in" water for each soda. Accountability! emoticon

One of the things that helped me was that I started by "adding in" things instead of cutting them out. So, for example, I didn't go crazy trying to completely change my meals right away, I just added a serving of veggies or a salad to lunch and dinner (and a serving of fruit to breakfast). I also started drinking water in addition to the diet sodas/iced teas/etc. (It was a long time ago now, but I think I had myself drink 1 glass of water for each soda/tea.) Eventually, the healthy habits started to displace the unhealthy ones, and, for me personally, it was a lot easier than going "cold turkey" off of my prior habits.

Park further away from stores and work so you have to walk more
Keep a bottle of water and drink from it all day
Do a full kitchen clean out and throw away/donate junk food
Try one new healthy recipe a week
Bring lunch from home rather than buying everyday
Buy smaller plates and bowls (and use them)

Ok, that's more than one or 2 :P but you can pick a couple to try now and add one as the others become habit. Good luck!

If you could suggest one or two things (to a newbie) to start doing to set yourself up for weight loss what would that be?
