When I tried joining private gyms here (and I weighed quite a bit less than now, but was overweight) I had people stare at me and look down their noses. The first I was on a trial, but the second I had the lifetime membership thing. I ended up transferring it to my Dad because the people were rude and I was so uncomfortable. He used it for a place to go swimming. I have since joined the Parks and Recreation Department and the people at every one of them I go to are nice. There I don't feel completely uncomfortable trying to use their machines or pool or even playing basketball or hitting a tennis ball in the gym.

The private gyms definitely have a lot of prejudice people in them.

Oh sure there is a prejudice against overweight people; judging, contempt, isolation from regular activity of life by stares and rude glares from others~

Thank you! The differences are people no longer look through me and act like I'm not there. Store clerks ask me if I need help and talk to me in a very pleasant way rather than walking away. Doors are held open for me rather let go in my face. Those are just a few. I know I'm more confident and act that way, but I don't respond to others any differently. At least I don't think I do. I believe others treat me differently now because I am more like they are and they don't have to worry that the larger person I was could be them. Also I'm sure they no longer look at me and think I'm lazy and stuff my mouth constantly, causing contempt.

Congratulations on reaching your goal weight!

I have a question, you mentioned you felt you were treated differently after you reached your goal. Do you think you behave differently? What do you think causes people's reactions?

It is remarkable how different I have been treated since I got to my goal weight. How so many find this "silent" discrimination acceptable is beyond me! I read a post on this very site the other day that said people only get fat if they are lazy and feed their faces all the time. I wrote a note to the page owner saying that I disagreed because there are many other reasons and listed a few. I also agreed that some ARE for the reasons mentioned. She wrote me a nasty note telling to quite trying to tell her how to make her page, called me controlling and un-friended me! I have a problem with a SP member leaving that on their spark page, though it is her right should she choose to do so.

Absolutely and as much as different types of discrimination and bias are protested against by organizations and others, this type of discrimination seems to be fully acceptable. Companies and stores seem to punish you for being overweight with ugly clothes selections if they have plus size selection at all. Also recently, there was an article on the Internet about plus size woman with a thin boyfriend and the negative comments were out in force. I am looking to find a new job and this is type of discrimination freaks the living daylights out of me. I weigh a lot more than I have on previous job interviews from eight years ago.

Excellent point KELWALD22 - I too notice that and I try to tell myself what a rockstar I am at work when I start to get self conscious. If there's anything I can be confident about, it's work so I can't let my insecurities about how I look influence how I act or other people will doubt my capabilities...

Interesting topic! I am in HR and have been responsible for Wellness Programs at work - it's odd that it's coming from the overweight HR person. But now that I am looking for another job, I struggle with that because HR is a representative of the company and most of the ones that I know are cute and perky and thin. I don't think I'm ugly but I'm not thin and perky for sure! I have an interview on Monday so I hope it works out better than I'm feeling after reading all the posts! emoticon

I know that I personally have felt like I was being judged for being overweight in the past. One thing that I think helps to get past this is to exude confidence. I've noticed that when I am feeling self-conscience, I am treated differently by others and tend to put myself in a victim mindset. But when I feel good about myself (at any weight), it creates a more positive environment around me. I believe that positive energy is infectious.

I do think that overweight people do suffer prejudice, but we are not helping things by judging ourselves. Everyone here is trying to better themselves and we should be proud for it. Just like the saying goes "Before you can love someone, you have to love yourself", so I feel that before we can stop being judged by others, we have to stop judging ourselves first.

I think I can... I think I can... Toot toot!

The prejudice against overweight people is the last field in which it is socially acceptable in which to humiliate, berate, or otherwise judge a person. It's no longer okay to saying anything about a person's race, ethnicity, disability, job, etc. Everyone has decided they have to have someone to put down in order to make themselves feel better.
As a 6' tall woman who is also overweight, I get a double whammy. Even when I was swimming a mile 5 times a week, taking a combination yoga/pilates class, and taking care of severely disabled folks who need a lot of physical care (transferring, etc.), I am still fair game to be humiliated or abused to make someone else feel better.

I don't really think that you can fight the prejudice, especially when doctors are prejudice (studies have shown that many will not even treat a person who is very overweight, but just tell them to lose the weight). I have even had people on Sparkpeople say that the ONLY reason people are fat is because they eat and don't exercise. If you mention that there are people with medical issues that make them fatter, they will reply that there is less than 1% of people who have medical issues that make them fat. That the people who are fat are just lazy. How do you fight people who believe that, including people who are fat. They don't consider that there are people who "stress eat" either, though they might be doing that to cope.

Yes, there is a predjudice. People just have zero tact when it comes to people who are "overweight". I had to endure the stupidity all throughout my childhood from adults and peers alike. That's probably why I don't associate with too many people now.

I have also been degraded due to my height (5'4"). People are just stupid. They have this mold that you must fit (thin, tall, huge boobs etc.). If you don't fit that mold, then people will degrade you. It's sad but true. The following is a quote from Sigmund Freud:

"I have found little that is 'good' about human beings on the whole. In my experience most of them are trash, no matter whether they publicly subscribe to this or that ethical doctrine or to none at all. That is something that you cannot say aloud, or perhaps even think."

It is sad but true.

I don't deal with too many people. Quality over quantity is always best. I prefer animals. :)

@Brooklyn_Born, when I was fat as a kid, not as many folks were fat even though I am only in my 20s. As I got older, the main people making the comments were not thin themselves so it is often the pot calling the kettle black.

I was at one of those photo shoots where you wear clothes that look like your in a Western. I was only about 20 lbs over my usual weight. I wasn't even fat. I was only 4 months pregnant. They only had some sort of skirt and a tunic type top. At the time I looked like I was a little overweight. They let me know they didn't normally have clothes that big for these shoots. I weigh a lot more now than I did then. It was pretty embarrassing and I wondered what they did for women much bigger than me. It was a fundraiser for our school.

I was once denied a job because of my weight. The job was in a retail clothing store, and the interviewer said I could only work there if I could wear their clothes. I asked why she bothered interviewing me if she knew she wouldn't hire me due to my weight. She said she wanted to interview me "for practice." I should have demanded payment for my time.

I think it depends on what part of the country you're in. I live in New Orleans, but travel regularly to the west coast (I used to live there). An obese person in Hollywood would almost certainly encounter an enormous amount of discrimination in their everyday life.

An obese person here in New Orleans, almost certainly no. Here, being obese is considered "normal" by many people, and most people you meet will be severely overweight. So in that context, definitely not.

Definitely!!! I have been at wt.goal and someone at the pool just commented how graceful I look and swim in the pool. After I gained alot of weight over the years, I continued to swim. One day a newbie came up to me in the lockers and suggested that I don't try to do tooo much at first. Later after she saw me swim over a mile non-stop in 55 minutes, she came back up to me in the locker room and said that she was in awe of my swimming ability.

Yes, I have people look at me like I needed to be put down. I have a friend who would be classified as morbidly obese and when we are out together people are horrible :( The looks of open disgust are completely inhuman.
