ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY YES. The strange thing is that many of us don't recognize it when it happens but in retrospect it becomes very clear.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

My son was born with some medical issues, long story, but he has always been underweight, used to be way underweight, now just a little sly of normal, his previous Dr who I finally fired, would tell me that I should not be concerned about his weight as it is better than being overweight which so many kids are. I also always thought he was implying something about me. What a prejudice jerk!

Yes!!!! One time I was going to Germany for International Marketing class; as the time came closer to going the instructors gave me a piece of paper to sit on due my weight. Well, talk about embarrassing!!! Despite the narrow mindedness of the instructors I went on to the Germany trip.

Yes, I get treated differently than my thinner friends - always have. Mostly, I'm ignored - which as an introvert is often a blessing. But I think it's contributed to my own weight issues. That I'd rather hide behind the fat and have an excuse. It seems scary to be noticed sometimes.

But even now that I'm ready - and transitioning - there are lots of barriers. I think a huge issue is that clothes in plus size are often TERRIBLE. And it is easy to judge someone who's not only big, but doesn't look as put together.

Now - in some areas there are decent clothes that aren't crazy-expensive, but not everywhere! I think it's a much bigger issue than society is willing to acknowledge. I'm glad its' starting to slowly change!

Unfortunately, yes.

Real wisdom, God's wisdom, begins with a holy life and is characterized by getting along with others. It is gentle and reasonable, overflowing with mercy and blessings, not hot one day and cold the next, not two-faced. You can develop a healthy, robust community that lives right with God and enjoy its results only if you do the hard work of getting along with each other, treating each other with dignity and honor.

Absolutely! I was normal weight (actually on the thinner side) until I was 45. I started to gain a lot of weight when I worked in a very toxic workplace and on top of going through menopause, my weight really became a serious problem. I can definitely see the difference in the way I am treated not only at work (when in the past I was given great assignments) to how people in general treat me when I am out and about. It is really sad. I never knew what overweight folks felt like and I probably fell in the category that folks who were overweight just didn't care about themselves to let them get the weight they were. Wow -- what a wake up call for me. Sure gives you a lot of compassion and understanding when you walk a mile in someone else's shoes.

Yes, absolutely!!! I'm physically disabled, and used a wheelchair in the past; now I use a walker. I never noticed "Fat Prejudice" before - which I think now was just because I didn't pay attention - but when I lost a lot of weight (105#), I DID notice a huge change in how people treated me.

I thought I was being very independent, despite being in either the wheelchair or using the walker; opening doors, shopping, basically getting around in general. However, when I was much thinner AND in the wheelchair or using the walker, people went out of their way to help me.

THAT'S when I noticed the difference. People - I mean, complete strangers! - were extra friendly and encouraging... In fact, it began to irritate me!

I wasn't really upset that losing weight didn't improve my mobility - I always knew it was spinal damage, not because I was obese. If I was the same weight before and after my injury, but before I was extremely active and after I couldn't use my legs, HOW could people blame my weight?!

When I gained the weight back, I was more aware of people's attitudes, and
I can definitely say I've had my share of critical, disapproving looks.

Of course. It was amazing how I got a great promotion and raise and was told how hard I was working when the only thing that had changed that year was my weight.

To be fair I have heard plenty of people saying hurtful people about skinny people also - 'Eat a cheeseburger' although it won't necessarily impact their lives in the same way it is still not nice to behave that way.

Surprised this is a question since I think everyone knows the answer is...a resounding YES.

My big sexy size rarely gets me a second glance unless I'm coming down an airplane aisle and then the second glance usually accompanies a thought of "Oh crap, I hope she isn't sitting next to me." LOL.

To be honest, I have the SAME thought x2 when I see a large person coming down the aisle because, I'm already large and the seats are VERY small, then I know I will be squeezed even more. Especially if it is a man as they seem to have no concept of personal and 'nuetral' space on a plane. The armrest is a nuetral zone not a "it's all mine" zone. :-)

yes, definitely! Ive been overweight for 6 years and definitely notice the difference from the way I was treated when I was normal size. It has made me alot more compassionate though. Its a heart issue (prejudice)just like people that are racist...its a heart issue

Yes, and I experience it on a daily basis. I work in a hair salon some of my coworkers are overweight and some of them are thin and almost without exception the my thin coworkers will get tipped 2-3x more than myself and my larger coworkers, despite having a a more open personality and in some cases being more talented.

absolutely! but you don't hear or read about overweight prejudice as much as you do against race, religion or sexual preference; to me, any prejudice is heartbreaking for all people involved...

I believe there is prejudice against overweight people. People tend to view them in a negative light.

Yes, and the really sad part is that it's not just normal weight people who are prejudiced against overweight people. It is often overweight people who are prejudiced against themselves without even realizing it! It's called "unconscious bias," and normally "good" people have these biases, too.

Don't think you're biased against overweight people? Try this quiz, created by scientists from Harvard University: https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/demo
/

Follow the links until you get to a page of tests and choose the "Weight" test. I'll bet you're astounded at the results!

I'm not posting this to depress anyone. Quite the opposite - I hope that all of us will realize that we may be our own worst enemy. Be aware that an unconscious bias may be the source of your own negative self-talk, and consciously pledge to yourself to think before you speak - even if it's mentally and to yourself.

Let's start a dialogue - If you find out you have this unconscious bias, maybe the person you just heard making an unkind comment about someone overweight does too. Talk to them about the fact that they may not even realize their own bias. If enough people begin to understand themselves and make an effort to change their thoughts and actions, we could make the world a better place.

I totally know what you mean. I have experienced that too like somehow it's okay for men to be fat, but not women. We are all supposed to be super models wearing revealing clothes and drooling all over these guys' sexual prowess. Oh...give me a break!

Believe it or not, it's men that usually judge me, not women. At least vocally. Men will come up to me while I get a second cookie or as I'm buying something in a convenient store, "If you eat that you're going to get fat", as they're holding a 20 oz beer or overweight themselves. What?! Are you kidding me?!

There's this line I got from Family Guy that's pretty spot on when it comes to things like that in society: "Fat men aren't fat. Fat women are fat." That is how it's seen.
