I agree with many of the others -- it took quite a while before anybody noticed at all. For me, it took about 40 pounds -- at 30 pounds gone, I noticed my clothes fitting a lot better, but nobody could really "see" it, except for my husband (who may have been humoring me!). But all of a sudden, EVERYONE seemed to notice at once -- not really sure why there was such a big difference between 30 and 40 pounds gone, but there was.

I know it's very frustrating right now, but keep doing what you're doing. It'll be all the sweeter when people finally catch on. In the meantime, congrats on your 20 pound loss! That is a lot, and personally I think the first 20 is the hardest to lose (yes, even harder than the last 10), becuase it's just so hard to get yourself into the weight loss groove. You're there now and rolling along - so don't let yourself get so discouraged by other people's reactions that you give up just as you're seeing substantial success! (And while I don't normally advocate violence, your co-worker totally needs to be smacked --- well, figuratively anyway -- for his dumb comment. What a doofus! I hope he is just clueless and not actively trying to put you down, but either way, please don't take it to heart. You are doing great!!)

Starting Weight: 260 lbs. (November 2010)
Quasi-Maintenance: 165 lbs. (June 2011)
Goal Weight: 150 lbs. (reached December 8, 2011)

Size 22W to Size 4

Currently maintaining within 5 lbs. (+ or -) of goal. I weigh daily, but also use a tape measure and the fit of my clothes to guage how well I'm doing.

20 lbs, really?!??! emoticon Sometimes, the best way is to weigh yourself however the emoticon can be your enemy as well as your friend. I like to emoticon myself and keep track of my inches. Yuo should be a smaller size after a 20 lbs lost. My clothes feel better, I walk a tad taller, my sleep pattern had improved and the lsat thing I look to are people. youy see yourself every day and sometime,s we're never satisifed. Before and after pics work however, you're past that! Most of us don't have this "problem"! emoticon

I am so glad you posted this. I had lost 37 pounds and no one noticed. My clothes were looser and the scale knew the difference, but I had to actually tell my family and friends.

I recently wrote a blog about Cat Litter and weight. I spoke of actually picking up the Tidy Cat, Cat Litter and it weighed as much as I had lost. It was very difficult to lug that weighty stuff in to my house. It was then that I realized how much of a struggle it was to have that much more weight on me. I am glad the weight is gone, and I hope to get more off.

Don't give up. Let's pull together.

Blessings to you.

Hello- some ideas....

Other ways to tell.... do you feel....

Stronger?
Faster?
More energetic?
Better rested?
Happier/more positive?

Have you....
Tried new things? Impressed yourself in some way? Motivated another?

Consider...
Take measurements at the start? Measuring your cardio/endurance levels. Take your resting pulse rate.

emoticon When I had lost a good amount of weight I couldn't see it and started to get frustrated.

I have a trick for you that I devised for myself. I know it will work for you, too.

A gallon of water weighs a bit over 8 pounds.

1. Fill four 1-gallon jugs with water and close the cap tightly.
( empty milk jugs will work just fine )

2. Now find a staircase. Walk down the stairs first. Then walk back up the stairs.

3. Now pick up two 1-gallon jugs in each hand. Walk down the stairs carefully carrying all that weight and then back up the stairs being very careful not to wobble and fall over.

4. Now tell me you can't see, feel or tell the difference. LOL

You will literally feel how much weight you no longer carry around with you 24 hours a day, seven days a week and wonder how on earth you managed it when you did.

You are worth all this effort!

emoticon

I started getting comments when I lost 30 pounds. Keep plugging away! Someone with PCOS losing 20 pounds is something to be celebrated! Keep up the great work and hopefully you will get the best reward! And I second or third or whatever the take measurements. Even when I was not losing pounds I was still losing inches. And just about all of them from my big belly ;)

It can be very discouraging when you have a lot of weight to lose. It was closer to 40lbs for me when people were like "wow, what are you doing". I wish I had taken a before picture. Or kept one pair of my big pants for the after picture. Measurements are good because a lot of times when the scale isn't moving much, your body changes a lot. Keep at it, recruit a couple of friends to keep you encouraged.

I have been slimming for 3 months and have a similar problem. I attend Scottish Slimmers and the leader took my measurements when i first joined. I measured myself recently and have lost nothing off my bust and nothing off my waist. I have however lost 2 inches off my hips! I thought i would shrink all over but obviously it's not happening like that.Someone told me that the first place you gain is the last place you lose from but I don't know if that is true.

Ive been hovering at 15 pounds for a little while now. But I am seeing major changes in how I look. I think our bodies pick and choose which victories they show to us each day. We just need to see the victory of the day, whatever it may be, and celebrate it!

I will go... I will do...

I've felt the same way. It's weird how 20 pounds might not make much of a difference and then 10 pounds more and BOOM--major changes. I think it has a lot to do with where out body loses weight. The 20 pounds have come off from somewhere, but not necessarily where we can see or feel the results.

Hang in there. You will see results soon and it will be worth it. Plus, the smaller you get, the bigger the changes will be. 5 pounds will eventually equal a change in pant size. But the larger we are to start with, the slower it will seem at first.

Marlamichelle, I definitely understand being short and carrying your weight in your stomach. It is no fun. In time it will show and like some said, measurements help a ton. I'm 5' 3" and down over 40 pounds, and sometimes looking at my stomach and just want to cry...I've lost inches but it's hard for me to see sometimes. Wish there was a quick fix for the belly area. *HUGS* Wishing you loads of luck during your journey.

You did notice a difference--you saw a 20 pound loss on the scale--congrats--that is awesome emoticon !

I would also encourage you to measure yourself from here on out so that you can be reminded that you are getting smaller and if possible wear appropriate sized clothes--it will be harder for you and others to appreciate your success if you are wearing big baggie clothes that hide your shape emoticon .

The discouragement seems to stem from the fact that this Dude at work didn't notice you had lost weight and estimated you weight as heavier than you are. Chances are work Dude is just clueless and also would not notice any difference if you gained 20 pounds either. emoticon

I would suggest not talking about your weight with work Dude or anyone outside your close circle of supportive family/friends. Remember that most folks are caught up in their own challenges and struggles and not tuned into others enough to notice anything but a drastic change in appearance.

emoticon

I'm having the opposite situation... I'm not really losing pounds but I can tell a big difference in the way my clothes are fitting. I think everyone loses weight differently... I mean, if you had it there, you could easily lose 20 lbs in just your boobs and not notice much going on everywhere else. All I can say, is keep your chin up and don't quit. If you quit you will NEVER notice a difference, if you keep losing weight there is no possible way that you WON'T notice a difference.... see what I mean? Just keep swimming! You WILL get there!

Um on the same boat! I'm down from 340 to 311 since the beginning of May and can't tell but people around me can and my clothes are feeling better. Just keep plugging away! Are you taking body measurements? I find seeing on a tape measure helps solidify my losses and that my body its changing. PCOS is a motivational reason for me to lose too.

Well, first, how tall are you? Little things like that play a HUGE role in how we see our losses. Also, can you tell in how your clothes fit? Or were they all really loose or tight? Also, genetically, how you carry your weight makes a big difference too. It wasn't as noticeable in some areas for me. If you are top heavy or apple shaped, and gain weight in your middle and upper body first, it might be a little while before it is noticeable. My weight is pretty evenly dispersed (with an emphasis on the lower end) so it is just different. If your legs are already thinner than your midsection, you might not notice the difference, but with me, it is the opposite, so I can tell when my thighs start to get smaller!!! I don't notice as much in my arms or other areas (they seem the same!)

Don't get discouraged, get a body fat tester of some kind. I bet you have lost some body fat. ALso, take measurements. It really helps.

Also, depending on how much you have to lose will depend if anyone notices. It took 30+ pounds before some people noticed for me.

So... A month ago my dr. told me I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and that I needed to loose weight so I got motivated to get my act together. It's been about 6 weeks and I've been kicking my but into action and working hard and I've lost almost 20 lbs but... I can't tell :(

It's a bit discouraging, because last night at work a guy said, "You only weigh 192 lbs?"

I was like... Really? I started at 210, dude.

How much weight do I have to loose before I start noticing differences, because this is discouraging :(
