I remind myself that I am NOT a garbage can, and I'm not to treat myself like one. It's not "saving" food, it's wasting it just like throwing it away is. Instead of the landfill, though, it goes on your hips!
The other thing I do now is insist my kids take their own plates to the kitchen. Younger kids can just take them and put them on the counter, and older kids can actually scrape their own plates.
Finally, start giving your kids less. If they always have leftovers, you're giving them too large a serving of food. GIve them less, and if they want more, they can have seconds. If they have less to eat, there's less there to tempt you.
