I am nearly a professional at this topic and question. At age 32, I had double pneumonia which took 10 months from which to recover. At age 45, I had two viruses which combined took two years from which to recover and gain my strength back. At age 54, I contracted a lung infection last May (seven months ago!) and still am not back to my normal energy and strength - still my chest is tight, aches, and hurts. In 2010, I caught a cold and had a sinus headache and earache for five months!
When not sick, I normally run 5 miles 3-4 times a week and workout 7 days a week in assorted sports.
Here is how I stay motivated and exercise when I am sick. 1) Drink lots of water
2) listen to your body - if you are tired rest. Your body needs it.
3) while resting, stretch. You can stretch your arms anytime you are upright, and your legs even in bed! You can stretch your wrist, and neck anytime, anywhere in most any position.
4) When you feel up to it walk around your house
5) As you get better walk around the outside of your house
6) Later, walk to the mailbox and back. - work up to walking 10 minutes 3-4 times a day for your exercise and stretch all over as often as you can.
7) Gradually as you improve, work up to walking 1/2, then 1, then 2 miles at a time.
Gently push your body to move, and give it time and opportunity to heal. Meanwhile, drink as much water as you can stand to drink.
The motivation comes from seeing your improvement. Focus on the positive aspects of your illness, and realize that it could be much, much worse. You can walk, you are not in a hospital or nursing home, and likely have family around for support.
If you can afford it, hire someone to help 1-2 times a month with cleaning floors and bathrooms. Plan easy to prepare and quick meals- maybe even have one delivered once a week. Use frozen dinners temporarily for a short time if necessary. Feeding a family is always hard for me when sick because I am so darn tired.
Forget about trying to lose weight. You probably will lose some, anyway. Stay away from sugary foods which won's help, and eat fruits and vegetables, protein, and complex carbohydrates to help give your body the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals to boost you immune system. Water is a natural immune booster. Drink lots!
Watch your progress as you improve. Usually, I don't see even week to week improvement, but see month to month improvement. I document it on a chart to help keep my spirits up. Minimize TV while sitting around. It doesn't much help your mind, and can keep you awake when you would otherwise be sleeping. Sure, watch some if you want, but read books as you have energy. Also, they can tend to get someone to sleep if they need it.
I get myself on a schedule as soon as possible. I get up and walk as far as I can without setting myself back, stretch, eat breakfast, and rest if necessary. I have a light lunch, then have a planned "down" time for rest or sleep if necessary. I have to get up to get dinner, eat and do dishes and laundry, then I am down again.
All that works if I don't have to work outside the home. If I have a job, the recovery will take longer than without one.
No one that I have ever met takes as long to recover from an illness as me. I get over bacterial illnesses timely, but not a virus. No one has more experience with keeping spirits up and keeping moving while getting necessary rest than me.
Please ask questions as I am very good at taking care of myself when sick. After many years of this, I have learned with some hard lessons as to what, and what not, to do.
By the way, I fully recovered every single time and eventually got back to jogging again! There is hope for full recovery! Be patient with your body and let it do its job of healing.
