If you're really trying to get into better shape and lose some fat, maybe you should ditch the scale entirely and focus only on body fat percentage. You can have this measured at most gyms and some scales (although not always very accurate) have BF % measurements as well. I have been struggling to lose the last 8-12 lbs for over a year now,but I've made great strides in my inches and BF% lost as I gain muscle and lose fat in the last tenacious spots.

Excellent. I weighed myself this morning, did all the right stuff during the day and made the mistake of weighing myself when I got home, UGH- it said a 4 pound gain. How discouraging. I like your idea on feeling better about myself more than what the scale says. Thank you.

I find that keeping my goal on being healthier and feeling better about myself more then what the scale says has helped me to stay on task. When the scale is your goal it's easier to get discoraged. At least that has helped me out.

I second what the previous poster said! The biggest thing is recognizing that it'll take awhile. I'm in my early 20's too, and going from 133 to 121 took way longer than what it did to lose when I was obese.

Omender had some good advice, and mine is going to sound like the same thing, haha.

When you go out with friends, stick to one drink (there are lots of Spark articles about what alcoholic beverages have the fewest calories) and pre-plan what you're going to order by checking the nutritional content ahead of time. Don't skimp on your earlier meals so you can overeat at the end of the day; that's never a good idea.

Make sure your friends know what you're doing. Maybe instead of hitting up cocktail hour, you can take a walk in the park or play tennis together. If they try to sabotage you ("oh, one bite won't hurt" - "you look fine, you don't need to lose weight"), put a stop to it immediately. You need supportive friends!

Since you only need to lose 10 pounds, recognize that it's going to take a long time. The less weight you have to lose, the longer it takes. So focus on toning; it'll make you look thinner without the numbers on the scale changing. If you really get into it, remember that the scale may go up as you gain more muscle and lose more fat. Pick another way to track so you don't fixate on a number.

Stay with it, and you will see results!

When you go out with friends, be as mindful as possible about what you are consuming. If you are eating, look up the nutritional information (or guess based on other restaurants if the particular one is not available) and when drinking keep it moderate.
It is probably going to take a long time to lose those 10 pounds. I would focus more on getting in shape- strength training and cardio- and see where that takes you in a few months. I have not managed to lose much in the last 6 months, but I am feeling better about myself and the way I look though I am still really dreading the swimming suit.

Hi there, I am in my early 20's and looking to lose 10 lbs. I am not overweight, just looking to get toned and be more fit. Need to lose belly and thigh fat! I am just looking for any tips to sticking with healthy eating, especially when my friends are always wanting to grab drinks or go out to eat. Also some tips for staying motivated and not getting down on myself when I slip up...I tend to be hard on myself and have always struggled with negative body image. Any help would be awesome, peace and love everyone :)
