Speaking as a complete stranger of course... I find that a lot of times people (and women especially) get caught up in taking care of others. You don't mention if babysitting the 5 dogs is a paid activity, or taking care of your neighbor... taking care of family is different of course, that's always important. I suppose all that is a long winded attempt to say, be careful that you're not giving high priority to things that shouldn't have it.

It can feel like being selfish to insist on having some time several days a week to do what is necessary for your health. But, even if it is selfish, everyone is entitled to a bit of that. It really is ok to make taking care of yourself a priority.

lots of great replies.

I consider my time walking my dog as exercise.
Some days we walk further and faster than others, as she's aging.
On those days; I try to supplement with other things.

In your case, perhaps not - but it's all exercise - even if it's not in a gym.

There are a lot of ways to deal with that. One is to exercise in the mornings BEFORE you get TOO tired. Another is to make sure you are getting a good night's sleep and enough rest so you will have more energy. Yet another is to cut yourself a little slack and try to figure out a way to outsmart your inner couch potato - by that I mean finding time to sneak little bits of exercise in throughout your day. Walking the dog, stretching in place while you stand in line, doing a few exercises in between chores. One person on here blogged about setting her timer so every 30 minutes she would get up and walk around the house for 5 minutes to help keep her knees and hips from hurting from sitting at the computer too long. You could adjust and modify any of these so they fit YOUR life. I like having weights next to my chair and lifting them while I watch tv. I also like the idea of outsmarting yourself instead of setting an unrealistic schedule that you won't or don't want to follow. Figure out what might work for you and when something doesn't work, try something else. YOU HAVE CONTROL and YOU CAN DO IT.

thanks. i guess i just wanna come home from work and curl up in bed with a book and have peace and quiet. i normally take my dogs to the park for our walk but i havent been able to. the one dog im watching is in false labor so shes requiring alot of attention at home. i guess i always felt like for it to really "count" i need to do at least 30min ALL AT ONCE even tho thats not true!

You need to make YOU a priority... with no excuses.
And since you COULD work in a walk, DO it!

I stay "motivated" by knowing that I need this. I need to be healthy. I know it's vain, but I want to stay thin. So, I get up at 4:30 to workout. before my kids are up, before the responsibilities of the day start. (I work fulltime outside the home and have two kids who do activities.) I "make" myself do it, because if I don't I will fall back into bad habits. Find a time that you can routinely carve out and make it "yours". If you need to be selfish to do it, do it. "If mama/caregiver ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!" Right!?!

I was going to say the same thing, break up the exercise into 10-minute blocks, just to get something in. And once you get that accomplished, you should feel more energized. I would set the kitchen timer and do the stairs at home until the buzzer sounded. Play ball with the dogs and do jumping jacks while they are getting the ball. Good luck!

You sound like you are very busy, and it seems some of the things keeping you busy are actually keeping you active, When babysitting the dogs, taking them for a walk is exercise, when picking up your niece from school, if you can go a little bit early like 5 minutes and park the car and walk around that's another way to get some more exercise. It does not have to be 30 minutes all at once. At work if it's not ground floor, take the stairs, by the end of the day you will have burned more cal than if you did a one continuous 30 minute walk.

I just cannot stay motivated to do anything! im sooo busy with life i cant even squeeze in a 30min walk (ok i COULD but i havent) im tired by the time i get home and so much stuff that needs to get done. how do u guys stay on track even when u get busy?
between work,babysitting 5 dogs plus my own 2,taking care of my mom and my sick neighbor and picking up my niece from school im exhausted!
