Good afternoon,

I seem to be posting just once a week. For last week, I ate much better though I did cheat a bit on beer. On second thought, last Thursday, I was working in the field and went to lunch with colleagues at a Mexican restaurant. Though I ordered chicken breast, lettuce, tomatoes, guacamole and rice, it came with 3 tortillas, which I consumed, of course. On my way home from work, I stopped for a beer, met a friend and split a fried soft pretzel with beer cheese appetizer. At home that evening, I ate some crackers and provolone, throwing away the crackers that remain. I had a TERRIBLE night sleep with which I won't bother you with details. I wonder if it was due to all of the day's gluten (i.e. tortillas, tortilla chips, beer, pretzels, cheese dip, crackers)? That would have been a normal day for me just two months ago.

Hey, my weight last week was 180lb!!! I'm simply hoping I weigh the same this week. I was a bit dehydrated that morning, plus I skipped dinner, drinking beer instead. So 180 this week will be an accomplishment.

Take care.
Peace.

Tom

Good morning,

I'm trying to get back on the Paleo way of eating. I've been cheating a bit too much last week. I was at 182 three weeks ago, then 185 and 182 again last week. I'd like to be at leats at 182 again this week, if not a bit less.

I was attempting to trim a large hedge in a very awkward location on Friday. This 8' hedge is at the top of the concrete stairs leading from the driveway, and next to the corner of the 3' concrete wall of the driveway. Long story short, I feel off a step ladder and fell into the driveway. The fall was about 5' or so, and I fell backwards into the driveway. My right heel took the primary impact and my left hand took the rest. I'll admit that I was very lucky I didn't break a bone, hit my head or hurt my back. But my heal was VERY sore whenever I tried to put weight on it. I stayed inside with my foot raised for the rest of the holiday weekend.
emoticon
Good news is that this morning I can stand on my heel with just a little discomfort. But the impact of walking is still too painful. If there was no improvement this morning, I was going to get it x-rayed. I was becoming concerned I may have chipped the heel bone. Hopefully I will experience further improvement tomorrow.

Hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July.

Peace.

The hip muscle was most sore on Saturday following a short stint of swimming in my gym's pool. The muscle was less sore on Sunday and is almost pain free today. I was limping around a bit last week, so I must have strained a hip muscle last Sunday while working out and/or during Sunday afternoon's 2+ hour hike. Swimming on Saturday must have restrained the same muscle. No problem, all is getting better quickly.

My left hip has been bothering me since Monday. I don't know what I did to it. I was working out my legs on Sunday morning, and I went on a 2.5hr hike Sunday afternoon. I've been limping a bit due to the hip all week. And today I carried a Kitchen Aid Mixer from my basement to kitchen and the extra weight and stairs really caused some discomfort in the hip. :-(

I weighed in this morning at 182lbs. Basically stayed the same as last week (lost 0.5lb). I'll be happy with that if I show a loss next week. I need to adhere to my Paleo diet this week.

Peace.

Hello,
Last Thursday I weighed in at 182.5, which was a 8.5lb loss in 3.5 weeks of eating Paleo. I said my short-term goal is to get under 180 within 6 weeks, so we'll see how I do with this weekly weigh in. I did start using a different hole on my belt, so that is good.

Peace.

Well, I weighed in last week at 185lbs and this week at 186.5lbs. I was away for 3 days of training and my meal options were limited. Hopefully I can reverse this one week trend and show a weight loss next week. My short-term goal (6 weeks) is to get below 180. My goal for 2014 is to get to 169. Peace

Good day. I made it through 2+ days of eating out. Mistakes made include red wine for dinner Tuesday and Wednesday, two meatballs for lunch Tuesday, American cheese in my egg on Thursday's breakfast. But I stuck with no bread, pasta, grains, legumes, gluten or dairy (except for the crappy slice of cheese on Thursday I couldn't avoid).

My weekly weigh in this morning has me at 187lbs. That is a 3lb loss in one week. Let's hope this keeps up as I continue to work the Paleo way of eating for another week.

Peace.

I survived Day 1 of Paleo. :-) I was quite hungry after my dinner (Bison steak, asparagus, sweet potato). So I mashed a ripe banana into a cereal bowl and added 2T of almond butter. After mixing, the concoction looked rather gross but tasted quite good. And those extra 200 calories got me through the night.

After today's good breakfast, I will be out for the rest of the day. That means eating lunch and dinner out. Wish me luck!!!

Peace

Today is Day 1 of the Paleo Diet. Bfast is eggs, spinach, turkey sausage and tomato. Lunch is a salad of Kale, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots and tuna fish with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I have an orang and banana in case I get hungry throughout the day. Dinner will be Bison steak, asparagus and sweet potato. Yummy. I also drank 8oz of Kombucha. :-)

I'm trying to get prepared for the Paleo Diet. They suggest to stick with it 85% of the time. I want to cleanse my system of dairy and gluten, and that may take a couple of weeks. But I will hopefully be able to slowly incorporate some bread/pasta and good dairy back into by menu.

I'll keep you posted as to how things go. Wish me well.

Peace.

I weighed in today at 190.5lbs. It was my first weigh in in over 8 weeks (since my mother passed away). I've been on the scale during that time, but never recorded any weight. I saw readings as high as 198lbs during the past 8 weeks.

I'm going to start the Paleo Diet on Monday, so I need to get back to tracking my food again.

It's been a rough few months. My mother passed away on March 14.

I think I've since been going through some emotional stages. The strangest has been an occasional feeling of being ALONE. It's pretty creepy and unsettling. But I haven't felt that feeling for several weeks.

Well, gotta go. just wanted to stop by and say hi.

R2Go,

Good day. Welcome to February. In four short weeks, in will be March. Though the groundhog predicts 6 more weeks of winter, Spring is just around the corner.

I've been having a difficult time keeping up with my tracking, and, therefore, my eating. The weight has stabilized, instead of decreasing, so I need to stick with it and get back on a roll.

How are you doing?

Peace,

Tom

R2Go,

Good morning. It's been 10 days since I tracked my food or posted. Between the extreme weather conditions and my crazy work schedule, I've been off my routine. Hopefully that doesn't result in a weight gain this week. We'll see.

How have you been doing? How is 2014 treating you thus far?

Take care. Have a safe and warm week.

Tom

R2Go,

Good morning. It was not a good day for challenge points yesterday, but otherwise it was a good day. I didn't walk (or get any exercise), and my tendon feels a bit better today because of it. And I had about 750 calories between breakfast and lunch, and when I got home I made an early dinner. I was at 1650 calories by 5pm, but was still quite hungry. I went over my calories by having some toast, a Zone bar and peanut butter. I kept it at 2200 and did not go crazy or binge. So I am alright with it, so long as I stay within my goal today.

Well, it is a busy day at the office, so I need to go.

Peace,

Tom

R2Go,

Good morning. This is my 1,500 post!!! How long have we've been doing this, 7 years???

How are you doing? I went for a brisk walk during lunch yesterday. The tendon felt ok once it warmed up. But it was sore throughout the afternoon. I think I'll skip the walk today.
emoticon

I did well with my calories yesterday, staying just under 1900. It wouldn't have be near that, but I went out for happy hour with some friends.

I'd like to finish this challenge week off strong (through Wednesday). So no happy hours today or tomorrow.

I hope you have a nice Tuesday.

Peace,

Tom

p.s. I didn't get credit for this post. It still says I have 1,499???

Good morning,

How was your weekend? It was incredibly warm and rainy, and I'm not complaining. It will be the same today before temps fall back to normal for the rest of the week (35 and 22).

I worked out on Saturday and Sunday. Just barely exceeded calories on Saturday and stayed within on Sunday. So I want to keep it going by having a good day today. One of my routine breakfast meals is egg beater, egg, spinach, black beans and turkey sausage. It tastes much better than it sounds. But when I arrived at work this morning, I realized I forgot the egg beater and egg. I thought it would be rather disgusting, but after the first bite of cooked spinach, it actually tasted quite good. But at only 192 calories, it is not very satisfying.
emoticon

I tripped on my uneven outside step 2 weeks ago Saturday. I thought I broke my ankle by the crackling sound, but I simply strained a tendon (Peroneus Brevis). That sucker is still sore. It apparently takes 2-4 weeks to heal, and being over 50, I guess I'm in the 4 week category.
emoticon

Wish me well that I have a good and healthy week. I really need to shake off the first 12 days of the new year in which I had only 2 good days. I'm just glad my friend and I started this challenge the week before new years.

Have a great day/week.

Peace,
Tom

Good morning. TGIF!!! I hope your week was a good one. I'm still trying to get back on track. I stayed within my calorie goal for the past two days, so that is a start. My exercise is still lacking, but I guess it is rather difficult given the weather we've been having. How many more days until Spring???

Good morning. How goes it with the low carb goal? Kudos to you for doing it. I'm a carb fiend.

Ouch. I've just gone through 5 days of no exercise and exceeding my calorie goal.

Sunday was my first day back on track with both, though my gym workout was awfully weak barely counting for 40min of cardio.

Are you prepared for the DEEP freeze? We're supposed to see temps as low as -11 to -15 tonight and a high tomorrow of maybe 4.

Whatever you do, please be safe and stay warm!!!

Well, first day back to work in 2014 and it's a snow day--only a couple calls and/or people came into the store. We closed up shop around 4pm and got home safely. But, baby, it is COLD out there--I mean, once it hits single digits it just doesn't matter any more.
emoticon
Today also starts my first day of reduced carbs and reduced calories. I think I did ok, too. I did not grab for cookies (of which there is a plate at the store) and pretty much stuck with the breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack. I did not get much in the way of exercise, actually, didn't get any exercise; however, I'm figuring I will tomorrow when I need to shovel my way out.

Are you getting any of this snow in PBurgh? What about these freezing temperatures?

Hey, good luck with the rest of your week--don't let a couple days of 'rest' distract you from the nearly 2 full weeks of active days!

R2Go,

Hi. HNY!!!

Today marks the beginning of my 2nd week of the 2014 Winter Challenge. I was doing quite well with both exercise and staying within calories for 4 straight days, then NYE hit. I wanted a quiet NYE, but it didnít turn out that way. I intended to go to the gym on NYE afternoon and again on NYD morning. But I blew off the afternoon workout and went instead to IKEA. I need a new wardrobe since my house has only ONE closet and it is only 29 inches wide!!! After IKEA, I went with a friend to a Happy Hour which lead to a few more drinks and some dancing. I went to sleep around 1am. Too tired and hung-over for a morning workout, so the past two days were a complete washout with zero exercise and exceeding calories. But as I said, today marks the beginning of a new week and I am determined to get back on track.

2014 is already shaping up like a new beginning in several ways for me. I'll share more once things are clearer.

Take care. Peace.

R2Go,

Good morning. No, I won't be going to Prague anytime soon. I don't expect to get my renewed passport for another 4 weeks or so.

The challenge has now been underway for 4 days. I've been JUST able to maintain calories (1900) for the past 3 days. The exercise (only cardio counts) has been going fairly well. We get a point for each 20 minutes with a maximum of 4 points in any one day. I've been getting 60 minutes most days (its only been 4 days).
emoticon

You're going to a very low carb diet? That would be nearly impossible for me. I do strive to get no more than 50% of calories as carbs and at least 35-40% as protein. But I don't think I'd survive long without toast or pasta.
emoticon

Keep me posted on how you do and how well you like that method of eating. I'm curious.

Have a great day. If I don't post tomorrow, have a Happy New Year!!!

Hi Tom! Thanks for the info on the railway. I shared it with my friend here as they try to figure out best approach to rebuild the one here (the Beacon Incline Railway).

Your challenge sounds great. I have a wedding to attend in the Fall of 2014 so my personal challenge begins on January 2. I plan to reduce my carbs to near 0 and keep my calorie intake under 1500. Not sure yet how I'll approach the exercise aspect but if I can keep my calories within reason I should still see progress. Good luck to all of us in 2014!!

Yikes! I'm so sorry to hear about the passport issue. How long will it take to get it resolved? Will you still get to to go Prague...for a very late Christmas visit??

whoops! Gotta go, hubby has bfast ready! :-D

R2Go,

Good morning. My first day of the Winter Challenge was ok, but I failed in the calorie effort. I went out for a beer or two, and ended up having three. After I ate my low calorie dinner, I was just over my goal of 1900. So then I decided I may as well consume some of the Christmas chocolate truffles. I ended the evening at 2600!!!

I did manage to get 3 points for cardio exercise (20min/each) and a point for eating 2 servings of fresh fruit.

How was your Christmas? And plans for NYE?

Tom

Merry Christmas.

My friend and I are starting a Winter 2014 Challenge today that will last for 12 weeks, ending the day prior to the first day of Spring. It is primarily tracking our food and staying under our individual calorie goal (mine is 1900) and tracking our excersize. We may each add a personal daily goal or two, but that's it. I wish us both well in this effort. I'm hoping he uses SP for his food tracking, though he's complaining about the cost of the SP app. :-)

How are you doing? Did you stay home or go to PA for the holidays? I hope you and your family have a blessed holiday season.

Peace,

Tom

Hi. Sorry for the delayed response. I was supposed to be in Prague as of last Thursday. I didn't make the trip due to my surprise that my passport had expired in August!!! I am not a fan favorite in Prague right now. emoticon

I'll answer your question about the historic incline railway directly to your email address. Hopefully I still have an active address for you.

If I don't get back to SP before Wednesday, I wish you and your family the very best throughout the holiday season and a very Merry Christmas!!!

Hey, Tom, I have a question for you, please. There's a mountain (sorta) here in our area and there's a grassroots group trying to get some fund raising started to get an historic incline railway fixed up and re-installed as a tourist attraction. One of the guys mentioned to me today that he understands there is such a railway in Pittsburgh but he doesn't have any information about it. He would really like to learn more about it and even pay a visit to it. Do you know what he's referring to? If so, what can you tell me?

Thanks!!

Hi Tom! Geez, I can't believe not even one of your siblings invited you to Thanksgiving dinner!? Sadly, that says alot about them.
emoticon
However, it does sound like you're ok with that in that you didn't have all those leftovers to consume before they spoil? Please know that I did think about you over the holiday and prayed you were doing well.

I hope the drop in rent is permanent? and not a temporary deal for you? I mean, if you have to keep moving your stuff around . . . oh, wait, hey, maybe that's not so bad afterall? It gives you some weight lifting opportunities?

whoops, I'm out of time already this morning so gotta run. I'll catch up more later!

Good morning. I'm finally caught up on our posts. :-)

No, I only had one meal of turkey and that was leftovers my buddy gave to me because he felt so sad that my family didn't get together for Thanksgiving. I usually will eat turkey leftovers for a WEEK and love every minute of it. But it was just me this year, so I made myself a plate of spaghetti for Thanksgiving.
emoticon

Did I tell you that I was planning to move from my rented house to an one-bedroom apartment in order to save money (pay debt)? Well, this was going to happen at the end of my lease which is January 31, 2014. Since I will be in Prague for three weeks over the holidays, I wanted to get some things done. My nephew helped me to move a lot of furniture that I have stored in my basement into an exterior garage I'm renting at the new apartment. We did this the Sunday after Thanksgiving. When I paid me December rent the following Tuesday (and give him notice that I'm not renewing the lease due to financial troubles), he stressed that he really wanted me to stay at his Aunt's house while the family wants to rent it (for her living expenses while she is still alive). So the family has agreed to lower the rent by $300/month, and I just agree to take care of the yard and to fix minor issues less than $100. Great!!! But now I have all of that furniture in the exterior garage that I must move back to the basement of the house.
emoticon

The silver lining is that the half empty basement is an opportunity for me to clean the place out and reorganize everything. I spent this weekend doing just that, and have maybe another 4-6 hours of work to complete the cleaning and reorg. Unfortunately, I'll have to pay rent for the garage since I won't have time to move my furniture out until I return from Prague in early January. Oh well, I guess one must spend money to save money.
emoticon

Peace.

Tom

Thank you. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!

Sleeping with your workout clothes on? That sounds pretty tough. I have a digital programmable thermostat and since I live alone, I can program it to fit my own needs. At night, the house drops down to 58 degrees. The heat comes on to 66 degress for about 30 minutes in the morning while I shower and get dressed. On the weekends, that warm up is a bit later and for a bit longer. Then I have it come back on to 66 degrees from 4pm-8pm. But there are times when I get out of bed to shower before the heat has kicked on. It is an eye-opener to be wet and naked in 58 degrees!!!

That's me, running to get dressed after showering in cold air!!!

R2Go,

Congratulations on getting the new iPhone!!! I have a iPhone 4-something. It doesn't have 4G capabilities, so maybe it is the 4S? Glad to have you onboard. :-) Are you adding many apps yet?

Sorry for being absent lately. Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving week I was at a symposium at a local university. Then I had a 5-day holiday weekend. So I missed over a week of food tracking and checking in with you. Getting back to work last week, I was very busy and never found the time to track my food or log in to SP. Obviously, my eating has been sporadic these past two weeks. So I am back.

The networking event sounds pretty cool.

Peace,

Tom

Happy Sunday After Thanksgiving. Have you had your fill of turkey yet?

We grabbed some leftovers from my sister's, where we celebrated Thanksgiving; but we brought home just enough so we wouldn't feel we needed to eat it all before it spoils. And for good or for bad, we brought home only 2 slices of pie (one pumpkin and one apple) of which I won't eat (not a pie fan). I will confess, however, that I ate more of my share of the "chocolate covered cake balls" over the weekend. heh heh

Well, I've got to get my only day that I'm home this weekend going -- there's so much to get done.

So, the weather report was calling for very cold temperatures yesterday morning (Monday), which is a gym day for me. BUT, in order to get my workout in at all, I need to get up at 5am (so I can still be at work for when we open). Our heat doesn't kick-on until more like 6 and I don't want to turn it on an hour earlier just for the 20-30 minutes I'd want to be warm while changing for the gym. Hence, my decision to get ready for the gym the night before and just sleep in my workout clothes. While it worked, I didn't have to change in the cold of the dark, early morning (it was 11 (with windchill) outside), it really wasn't very comfortable during the night. ....I will probably try it one more time to see if I can sleep but for now the jury's out on the concept. Who knows, I may end up skipping morning workouts for the winter...

hey, Not sure if I'll get back here before the weekend - so I'm wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving. I pray you truly find reasons to be thankful find some peace in your heart.

Hi Tom,

Glad to hear your doctor is pleased with your progress...guess you're not doing as bad as you thought? and Whoo Hoo! for the loss in just a week! That sounds like you're moving enough! The Health Coach sounds like a good idea. Does he think the coach will help overall, including the depression? Are you keeping up the movement? He wasn't being condescending about the eat less-weigh less comment, was he? I mean, duh, doesn't that just make sense? The hard part is in the reality of doing just that--I know I'm having trouble with that.

The networking event was nice. There were folks I knew as well as some new business women I hadn't met before. They did have some food, sandwich wraps and mini cupcakes, so I had my dinner and dessert.

Hubby gave me an iphone for my bday...I went all day without even knowing I didn't have a working phone in my purse. (my former phone was just an old flip phone)

Have a great weekend!

R2Go,

Good morning. Though you may have been born prior to 1974, your spirit is still young and free!!!
emoticon

My doctor was rather happy with my health and my recent efforts to get fit. He has provided me with a Health Coach, a phone service that will support my weight loss efforts. I told him that I may be struggling with getting my daily intake of calories down, but I've been exercising much more. He then did some quick math to explain that weight loss is PRIMARILY eating less than one's BMR. The calories burned in an hour running on the treadmill is equivalent to about 3 ounces of fat. A small milkshake following that workout would complete wipeout the calories burned in that hour. Eat less, weigh less.
emoticon

That being said, my weigh in this morning has me at 188.5lbs. That's a 2lb loss from last week.
emoticon

A business women's networking event with wine??? Happy networking!!!

Thank you. And you have a wonderful Wednesday and weekend (I'll be here). Can you believe Thanksgiving is just a week away???

Peace,

Tom

Ok, you just racked up enough points to get you out of any trouble for like then next 5 years -- at least!! emoticon 39 was a good year for me, actually; I wouldn't mind reliving it.
emoticon
Alas, I have to admit, however, that I'm much older than 39. I suppose I'm doing better than many my age but I would certainly like to get as fit as I was prior to my bike accident. Although I also accept that won't happen since I can no longer afford a personal trainer to help me get there. What I really need is willpower--to cease consumption of the non-healthy treats I just pop into my mouth (like chocolates and other candies and cookies etc) or at least to limit the quantities better.
emoticon
HA! That being said, I have a "Women & Wine" event to attend this evening. It's a Meet-Up group of business women who get together on a monthly basis to network.
emoticon
Speaking of work, (like how I'm segwaying today?) yes, I do indeed miss my Mon-Fri former day job--but only for the work hours and vacation time I used to get. I really haven't looked back since leaving. The corporate culture is different and I learned much from my 30 years there, skills I brought with to my husband's business, but I like helping my husband with his business (as best I could) and look forward to planning our retirement years together. I just wish we had more employees to help with the workload, which can get quite overwhelming at times.
emoticon
So, on that note, it's time for me to bid you a good morning, good day, and great weekend! I hope you do well and get out there for a bit each day. I'm off to my morning networking meeting (Business Network International aka BNI) which begins every Weds at 7am. At least it includes breakfast (there I go, eating again--yeesh).

R2Go,

Hello. I did fairly well over the weekend. I exercised Saturday and Sunday mornings. Didn't consume any alcohol and didn't have any cigars. I did go out with a buddy on Monday evening and had a few drinks, but no cigars.

I go to the doctor today for my overdue annual exam. I'll tell him about the depression, though I've been doing much better the past couple of weeks (reduced alcohol and more exercise). I'm suppose to meet a friend at the gym this afternoon.

I'm looking to move from the house I rent to a small one-bedroom apartment. My debt has increased quite significantly these past couple of years, and I can't afford the $1,000 monthly rent at the house. I only moved into the house because I thought it was sufficient to make Helena, my wife, comfortable when she first arrives here to live. But her arrival has been delayed from 2012 to 2014 and now to 2015. So I will make due with a small apartment for at least a year as I attempt to lower my debt by $10,000, a small but significant dent.

Sorry to hear you've been too busy to get to the gym. I guess it is hard to develop a weekly routine while things are so busy with the business. Do you miss your Monday through Friday work schedule?

I also can't get a grip on the food intake. When I do well, I'm coming in around 1800, but too many days (a majority) are well over 2000. I need to get it down to 1600-1800 routinely. I have about 20lbs to lose (target weight of 170). Even that is borderline over weight.

I am sorry to hear about your sister's health. I'll keep her and you in my thoughts.

My Outlook calendar reminds me that you turn 39 on Thursday. Congratulations!!!

Hi Tom, so how was your weekend? Did you get through the rest of last week ok? Have you spoke to your doctor about your depression? I didn't do so well, myself. Didn't get to the gym at all last week. I did however use my ski machine over the weekend. I suppose it's better than nothing but the best thing I could do, besides getting to the gym, would be to control my food better. Oh well, you certainly know how that goes. . . . sigh.

My sister was up to see her Lyme doctor on Friday; it's been 6 months since she's been on super antibiotics and she's still not up to par. For 5 months her symptoms were easing but the lst two her symptoms were going in the wrong direction. I feel so very bad for her; I'm very worried about her. The lyme would be bad enough but coupled with the gastroparesis she's really in a tough spot.

I pray you have a good week ahead . . . I've got a bday celebration coming up on Thursday.

Good morning.

I managed to stay beloew 2000 calories yesterday, though I had some chocolate and 2 slices of cinnamon toast after dinner. I weighed myself this morning just to peek, and I was 190lbs. I recorded yesterday's 191 since I should never had eaten the entire bowl of mac and cheese Tuesday night. My goal for the week is to be below 190 next Wednesday. My annual doctor visit is next Tuesday. My cholesterol levels (medicated) were very low, but my triglycerides (also medicated) have increased from 190's to 287. That is most likely due to my increased drinking during this recent depressed state of mind. I feel as though I've made great strides to get out of that state of mind these past 3 weeks. I just need to carry it through for all of winter.

I plan (hope) to go to the gym this evening. I typically go on Saturdays and Sundays, but never make it during the week. Last week I had a four-day weekend and I made it to the gym all four days. It was great!!! So getting in a workout tonight will help.

I hope you are not TOO busy at work where it causes you undue stress. Otherwise, I assume being busy is a good thing. $$$
emoticon

Take care. Be well. Have a great Thursday.

Peace,
Tom

R2Go,

Hi. Tuesday was a tough day. I did get in a brisk 60min walk at lunchtime. I was very busy all day and only managed to eat about 550 calories for breakfast and lunch combined. My tooth was aching a bit and I was concerned about getting stuff in the hole. I had to go to the dentist last evening and he restitched the extraction. He said the new bone material was doing well, but the new stitches will protect it while it heals for the next 10 days.

I was very hungry last night though my mouth was aching quite a bit. For something quick (it was getting late) and soft, I made macaroni and cheese. I exceeded 2000 calories for the day. It was a difficult kind of day.

My weigh in this morning had me at 191 lbs. Last week was 190 lbs, but I felt that was a false low because I was having digestive problems the day prior. Today's reading I think was a false high due to last night's macaroni feast. I'm shooting for 189.5 for next week.
emoticon

I hope you can get yourself into a good and healthy routine. I'm trying to do the same.

Peace,

Tom

I still say OUCH to your tooth! Yikes! emoticon

I'm surprised that Hospice determined there was no need for their services; especially being in a large city as PBurgh. The hospice in my area is there not just for the patient but for the entire family. Their services are there and available to help everyone through the full process--(this is not the best way to phrase it, but it's concise) start-to-finish.

How did you do on Tuesday for food and exercise? emoticon

I've not been to the gym yet this week -- the colder weather at 5 am has made me want to stay in my warm, comfy bed. I'm going to see what I can do to start getting out of work early enough to go to the gym in the evenings for the winter. Maybe I'll catch some yoga classes.

Ok, gotta run, I have a 7am meeting and I'm pushing here for time.

Have a great Wednesday!

Good morning,

Though I am limited in what I can eat because of the stitches in my mouth, I am still having a hard time staying below 2000 calories. I had one bad meal yesterday which cost me 1000 calories, and I snacked on some chocolate after dinner (still before 7pm). All in all, I finished at 2700 yesterday. Maybe I was hungry due to the past four days working out? I need a good Tuesday before my weekly weigh in tomorrow morning. I hope to be at the same weight as last week and not any higher. But that will be difficult.

Have a great day. Take care.

R2Go,

Hi. Great to hear from you. It must be good news that the business is doing so well that you're working such long hours. How does one go about determining if the recent spike is long term justifying the need for a new hire?

We've had hospice assistance with visiting my mother, but it seems that only lasted for a few weeks until they determined she no longer required it. I agree, I've been going through a mourning process with my mother's eventual demise. I seem to be coming out of it recently, perhaps the avoidance of alcohol and increased exercise are the reasons.

The tooth had a root canal performed several years ago. It was then crowned. Recently, the remaining root has split allowing infections to settle in under the gum. When they extracted the crown and root, they had to implant bone material since some of the bone had deteriorated over time. That takes about 3 months to heal and become part of the original bone. Only then can they implant a post into the bone, and that takes another 2-3 months to heal before they can finally insert the new tooth. I expect this will be all done by May 2014.

I made it to the gym four days in a row (F, S, Sun, M), and it feels great. Tuesday will be a much deserved day off of exercising, well, except for a walk or two.

Thanks for your input. It is nice to hear from you.

Peace,

Tom

Hi Tom! I know, I know, "where have I been?"! Our business has just been so busy we're working 12-14 hour days including weekends. Can't figure out if it's a spurt or if it's going to stay sustained where we need to hire someone. . . tough decision. Anyway, with those hours I don't always get online each day. And I've not tracked my food in quite some time. sigh...

Hey, I'm so very sorry to hear about your Mom. Have you talked to or enlisted the help of a Hospice agency? I think they may be able to help you cope with her illness and, hopefully, alleviate some of the stress and depression you're going through. You're going through a mourning process as you realize she's terminally ill and could probably use an outlet for letting those emotions out. I pray for you!

Ouch! I certainly hope you survived your root canal and are feeling better?? I didn't realize it was such a long time between the actual root canal surgery and the final tooth "install". Did they say why the long time?

Keep up the exercise---that will also help you cope with the stressors in your life.

R2Go,

Good morning. Today is my dentist appointment for my tooth extraction. Oh joy.

Wy weigh in for this week has me at 190lbs, which is 2.5lb loss from last week. But I am having some kind of digestive problem for the past 3 days and I think that has given me a false low reading. But I'll take it. It is something to shoot to maintain for next week.
emoticon

My food tracking shows I've been maintaining about 2000 calories a day with at least half of those coming at dinner and beyond. Not much has changed over the years, eh? But 2000 does give me a chance to lose weight, particularly if I keep up with the exercizing. I will need to get the calories down to 1800 or lower to get to my target weight of 170.

Hope you are doing well. Hope to hear from you soon.

Peace,

Tom

Good morning, R2Go,

I went to my work happy hour last evening and drank water and ate a small fried fish fillet and french fries.

I've been trying to eat right and exercise, though my preliminary weight seems to be increasing (official weekly weigh in is tomorrow).

How are things with you?

Take care.

Good day. I made it to the dentist on Thursday. The tooth root is split and infected. I've been taking antibiotics and pain meds since Thursday. This coming Thursday I return to the dentist so as to get the crown removed, the tooth root extracted and new bone material implanted. After about 3 months, I may be able to get an implant permanently inserted into the new bone. How fun!!!

I'm trying to exervise and eat right. Probably still not doing well with the eating right effort, but the beer and cigars have been drastically reduced!!!

Good morning. Yesterday was a pretty good day. I got in 60min of walking and my total calories was below 1900. Anything less than 2500 is a plus at this stage. I plan to meet a friend for a strong walk after work today, so I am pushing for a two good days in a row.

Hope to hear from you soon.

R2Go,

Good morning. How was your last weekend of October? Mine was better than the previous few weekends. I did get to the gym on Saturday and Sunday. My food intake was not disastrous, well except for eating an entire loaf of Pillsbury Rustic French Bread with a little butter on Friday for a late dinner.

I cooked Chicken Chana Masala yesterday to be my lunch for the entire week. I haven't had any yet, but it smells delicious. And it is very healthy.

I expect to take a good 60min walk at lunchtime today. I'm meeting a friend at a local high school tomorrow evening, while his daughter is at dance school, and take a good 60-90min walk. I know it is one day at a time, but I really want to try my best to get through the next two days following this healthy and active plan.

I have a doctor's appointment in 4 weeks and I have to get a lipid profile blood test done in about 10-12 days. I need to have a good run.

Hope you are doing well. Have a good day.

Peace,

Tom

R2Go,

Good morning. Yesterday was not a good day for me. I totaled 2500 calories, had no exercise (cold and rainy), and drank 3 beers. But today is a new day. My breakfast and lunch total 900 calories, so if I can keep dinner (and snacking) below 1,000, it will be a good day. I'm going to visit my mother at the assisted living center after work.

How are you doing? Can you believe Halloween is next week??? Where does the time go?

Peace,

Tom

R2Go,

Hi. Wow, it has been 7 weeks since I've been on SP. The big news is my mother, she is not doing well at all. In fact, it seems we are watching her slowly slip away from this Earth. She's been diagnosed with cancer (liver, colon and lung), though she doesn't seem to be in any pain at this time. She also must have had a stroke in August or September because she can no longer express her needs. She'll often say "can you get me..." or "I need..." and then there is just silence as she struggles to find the words to express her thought. But she can't, ever. We will guess the obvious things (bathroom, hungry, thirsty, cold, warm), but it nevers seems to be one of those. She sleeps maybe 20 hours a day. She is too weak to walk, so she is in a wheelchair when not in bed. She has no appetite and its hard to get her to drink much of anything. I've been very depressed, having crying fits, trouble sleeping, and drinking too much beer. I try to workout once or twice a week, but otherwise I want to hide from the world. I need to stop and take better care of myself. So I am back. Back to SP and my good friend, you. emoticon

I hope things have been going well for you.

See you soon.

Peace,

Tom

just realized we haven't been on Spark for almost a month! Tsk, it doesn't help me at all when I don't track what I'm eating. And I've not done any tracking for at least the past month. I really need to: stop eating so much, exercise more. Sounds so simple, doesn't it.

Hey, I hope you are doing well!! :-D

I do have the Fitbit One. The food gets entered (when I can ) into Spark then synchs up with the fitbit. The fitbit then gives me a daily and a weekly analysis of in vs out. If I do exercises such as weight resistance or water sports, I enter the activity into my fitbit page (or I could enter in on Spark) but I have no idea how it tracks what I do when I wear it throughout the day. I did wear an additional pedometer one day to see how the two matched up and they did--exactly. I actually haven't yet read the details on the gadget yet, but it is motivating to some degree as I like to see the analyses.

I'm sorry to hear about your Mom. I can certainly understand how she wouldn't be happy about being in an assisted living facility. I'd imagine it's most difficult for anyone (at any age) to have been independent for so long and no longer being able to do/go as they please. But you have to think of what's best for her and you're doing the right thing to ensure she's safe.

I've been neglectful for a couple weeks here on Spark (seems when my computer needs a reboot, I don't always get right back online). This morning I realized while I'm getting to the gym twice a week now regularly, I've not done anything yet to curb my food intake. Soooo, let's see how it goes today--first goal is to stop eating by 7pm--no late dinners or snacks. If I haven't eaten by 7, then oh well!

R2Go,

Good day. I've been getting in some good, quick walking these past three days. I'll make it to the gym on Saturday and Sunday. The gym has been closed since 5pm on Wednesday and will remain so until 8am Saturday.

I'm still trying to get my first day in with less than 2,000 calories.

Hope all is well.

Peace,

Tom

R2Go,

Good morning. I weighed in at 193 this morning. It is due to my own actions (and inactions). I want to quit drinking beer for a month as I prepare for my health assessment. We now need to get blood work performed to determine our health status and to earn a percentage discount on our share of our health care coverage. But my plan to quit as of yesterday failed when a friend called and asked if I wanted to go out for Vietnamese dinner. It was the last day for his Groupon. Well, of course, going out to eat also meant going out for a few beers at happy hour first. My calorie total yesterday was 2,600 with 750 being from beer. emoticon

Which fitbit do you have (flex, zip or one)? Since you mentioned tracking your sleep, I guess it must be either flex or one. How does it work? Do these things simply track your exercise (or steps taken) in a day? Do you still use SP for tracking your food? The fitbit scale looks cool, but I've been manually tracking my weekly weight for 3-4 years. I'd like to hear more about your experience with fitbit.

Have a great day. It is already hump day.

Peace,

Tom

R2Go,

Hi. How was your Labor Day weekend? My family moved my mother's belongings (what would fit) into an assisted-living center on Saturday. When she gets discharged from rehab later this week, she'll go directly to the center. She is rather sad about that. emoticon

No, except for 3 weeks in June/July, Helena hasn't been in the States for well over a year. And then it was just for 2 weeks. She is planning to move here in late summer 2014. It is difficult for me to be excited about it since I can't believe it until she is actually here.

Fitbit? What is fitbit? I can't workout in the morning because I start work at 7:00am. The gym opens at 5:30am during the week, but I have a hard enough time getting out of bed at 5:30am. And if I did manage to get there at opening time, I'd have maybe 45min to workout before I'd have to shower and leave for work. I need to check out some of their group classes in the early evenings (5-7pm) and find one I'm willing to attend. As for Saturday and Sunday, I usually go when it opens at 8am for my two weekly workouts. I was successful last week with working out on my bowflex at home, but it is not comparable to the workout I get on the free weights and machines at the gym. (But better than nothing!)

Hope all is well. Have a great day.

Peace,

Tom

Hi Tom,

I didn't realize that Helena is still away. When is she due back? I don't think I've ever spent my anniversary (32 years now) without my hubby....sure wouldn't want to, either! emoticon
I'm enjoying my fitbit...it's a cool gadget and will give me a weekly report of my overall exercise, and energy consumption vs expenditure. I've learned that I average about 7.5 hours/night of sleep.

I'm so excited about getting away for the weekend...will need to check the weather forecast to see if we'll be bringing our bikes and kayaks with us.

I have confidence in your ability to get back to the 190 quickly. Get to the gym first thing in the morning. I'm only getting there myself 2ce a week but by going in the morning I've found at least I actually get there. When I'd try to get there in the evening there was always something happening to keep me from going.

If I don't get on again before the weekend I won't be back until after Labor Day...so I want to wish you a great weekend and I hope you get some good down time and can relax for a bit.

Good morning,

My weigh in today was 191lbs, a 1lb gain. But I'll take it since I did next to nothing this past week to warrant a weight loss. And last week's 190lb was a 3lb drop from the week before. Now I need to try to get back to 190 for next week.

I must run. I have a meeting out of the office in one hour.

Take care,

Tom

R2Go,

Hi. I trust the anniversary party was a good time. My 2nd Wedding Anniversary is Tuesday. But there won't be any party this year. Who knows, maybe Helena and I will be together and have a party next year for our 3rd???

I had a decent workout at the gym Sunday morning. I REALLY need to get an additional workout in during the week. Saturday and Sunday mornings are the norm, but a 3rd is required for me to move ahead and not just maintain.

I'm still trying to get back to tracking my food. I haven't tracked anything since Friday's lunch. I've just entered today's bfast and lunch. Let's see if I can enter my dinner from home tonight.

I hope all is well.

Peace,

Tom

Hi Tom,

My sister is holding her own. There wasn't any real progress with her symptoms this past month so the doc wants to give her one more month before deciding if there should be a change in treatment. I'm hoping she does well and makes some good progress!

I'm sorry to hear about your Mom. I do know how hard it is to decide on the best course to take when trying to do the right and best thing for an aging parent - and one that they'll understand and buy-in to.

Hey! It's a good thing that inspite of all the stress and lack of actual gym time, you've made some progress in the right direction as far as the scale is concerned. I've not made any progess and I've been going to the gym twice a week regularly for two months now. sigh

Ok, today I need to go get my exercise in so I can then get the lawn mowed as we have an anniversary party to attend this afternoon....and probably well into the evening....

Have a great week!

R2Go,

Good morning. I am shocked to learn that I have been away from SP for only 3 weeks!!! It feels like 3 months!!! August has turned into my busiest and most stressful month of the year. At work, I've been running out of the office for 3-4 days a week which causes me to get further and further behind with my office work. And my mother is still in the rehab center. She is just starting to walk, so at least she is getting stronger. The folks at the rehab center is giving her two more weeks of rehab to further strengthen her muscles. But they are telling the family that they do not believe she can be discharged back to her apartment and independent living. I don't know what we'll do.

How is your sister doing? How are you? Obviously, my eating has been sporadic and off the charts since I haven't been tracking for the past 3 weeks. With conflicting schedules in August with my workout buddies, I've been lucky to get in one workout a week. Everyone's schedule is getting back to normal since vacations are ending. I'd like to incorporate a 3rd day per week workout, perhaps one of the group classes.

Somehow, my weigh in this week has me at 190lbs, though I was 194lbs last week. I'll take it, but will need to work hard to be at 190lbs again next week.

Well, I'm trying to get back to you and SP. I hope you have a wonderful day.

Peace,

Tom

So I like my fitbit. It talks to Spark and visa versa so Spark learns what I do energy-wise from Fitbit and Fitbit learns what I eat from Spark. Then Fitbit gives me an analysis of calories burned vs consumed for a net total. It also tracks my sleep, even noting the times I awaken during the night. It seems my average is I fall asleep within 7 minutes of hitting the pillow and after deducting the times I wake up, I'm getting about 7 hours actual sleep. I think that's decent in the sleep department.
emoticon
However, I am NOT getting anywhere near enough exercise! especially in light of the calories consumed. So I need to make changes in both areas there. ...oh, like I didn't already know that!
emoticon
How have you been doing?
