Yes, I suppose you're right about the nuclear concept. It's still hard. I try to get out there 4-5x a year, but the tickets run into money & push my credit card up, but in the end, it's worth it. Retirement should be in about 5 1/2 years and hopefully, we'll do it then. Hope you're having a good day, early as it may be for you.
Best regards,

I had a similar situation when my kids were very little. My husband and I were both from NY but moved to CA in 74 with a job transfer. My mom was still in NY, so she would come out every year for her vacation. She finally moved out here when she retired (my daughter was 3 and my son had not been born yet). All of the rest of our family still is back on the East Coast although most of them have moved out of NY over time. The whole nuclear family concept is very different these days, when jobs and many other things intercede.

Yes, I suppose we all have to do what's best in our lives at the time. My daughter moved her & her family there 3 yrs. ago. She couldn't afford NYC anymore and her husband was originally from there. Hence, I've become a frequent flyer. But I do feel bad b/c I can't get to see my grandkids grow up. However, our visits are special.

Separation from family is tough. I'm in New Mexico but my sister and the rest of the family lives in Ohio. I just got back from a visit there. I love seeing them all and being bart of their lives. Visits are always too short. BUT - I'm the member of the family with itchy feet. Lived in different states and worked at different jobs. I can't imagine what my life would have been if I had stayed in my home town.....besides, it's really COLD up there.

Yes, yes it is. I'm seeing them in 2 weeks and am sooooo looking forward to it. We were supposed to move to CA this year, but DH put the kabash on it. Too drastic a lifestyle for him. So thanks to the airlines, I'll be booking a lot of frequent flyer miles! Take care and talk to you soon.

Believe me....I do know how blessed I am....mine are 5 blocks away!!!! In this picture (last July) George was still 4 and Deni 6 weeks. He's now turned 5 and of course she is 8 months. I'll have to upload some recent photos on my spark page because she looks so different and has such a huge personality!!! Just a funny beautiful little girl! He's a doll too but hasn't changed too much since July. As you can tell they are the lights of my life too!!!! Isn't it just THE BEST to be a grandma?!

It's funny. I'm looking at the picture of your grandchildren and it's almost the same as mine. They look like they are the same age. How much apart are they? My grandson is turning 4 in August and my granddaughter will be 1 yrs. old on March 15th. They are the joy of my life, even though we're 3,000 miles apart. Sigh!

Boy, isn't that the truth, Marzy? It's totally a lifetime committment....a lifestyle change, otherwise you will put it right back on...as we all seem to know!!!! Take it a day at a time and if ya goof up now and then....call it a veggie and move on!

I agree w/Pam. Healthy weight loss is a gradual thing; i.e. when I belonged to Weight Watchers several years ago, 1-2 lbs. a week was fine. Sometimes you do reach a plateau, but it could be for a lot of reasons. I just stuck with it and when I finally reached my goal, it was heavenly. Unfortunately, I gained it all back (and then some) and now I'm realizing this is a lifetime commitment, especially when you get older. So hang in there!

The philosophy of healthy weight loss is no more than 1 or 2 #'s per week....sounds like you are right on target, Barbara!!! There are some weeks that the scale doesn't budge for me ~~ it's hard not to just give up, but....I won't!!! Not only am I committed to losing but I am WILLING to do it! Someone told me that was the key...you have to be willing to do it...to put forth the effort to workout, give up the foods that hinder the weight loss, drink the water....the whole package!!!
Good luck, sweetie....I am positive that you CAN do it!!!! Or as Nike says....just DO IT!! LOL!

That motivation is hard to come by--I have been following the plan so successfully for a little over a week and I lost 1 pound. I know it's not a failure but it sure makes it a little harder to go on with enthusiasm. But in the last year I have made a complete change in my diet, so if I still feel that I can do it!

Here's hoping for success for all of us!

Hello Jaye & Marz,
To coin a phrase.....just call it a VEGGIE and move on!!!! Once it's done it's done ~~ no sense in beating yourself about it...just try to do better next time and know that this is a "lifestyle change" not a temporary one! I have come to realize that healthy weight loss and they way to a healthy body is a marathon and not a sprint!
Hope that you have a beautiful day/ evening!

Love and hugs

Jayelaitch,
Just think: This is the year that you will finally tuck that t-shirt in! You can do it and so can I! I've been on the Zone diet for about a month and joined Curves and I keep saying, "Well, get thin already." We humans are soooo impatient. I'm trying to stick to these words these days: MOTIVATION, PERSERVERANCE, PATIENCE. We'll all jump off the wagon sometime, but we're only human. If that happens, forget about it and start again. Famous last words! Talk to you soon........

I'm smiling about "doesn't it drop off as soon as you decide?" I've always believed that if you BUY exercise equipment and set it up in your house, that should be enough. I mean, I made the effort, right? I shouldn't have to USE it too!
I always lied about my weight - automatically subtracting 5 pounds - and then 8 pounds and then...

It got harder and harder to hide the buldges though as the blouses/shirts in the stores got shorter and tighter. I had to buy things 3 sizes larger to be wide enough and long enough to hide my emerging apple shape. What do men do since they usually tuck things in? I haven't worn a tuck-in shirt for YEARS!

Hi, Barbara
Boy, don't I know what you are saying!!! I would never tell anyone how much I weighed....have been embarassed about it for many years!!! When I decided that I was going to make a commitment and was WILLING to do something about it I let people know what I weighed (family and friends) and how much I was going to lose. Since last Fall I have lost 20#'s which in the past I would have felt a failure....doesn't it need to drop off as soon as you decide???? well, slow and easy is the way to do it so that it counts and stays off!!!

Good luck on your journey, Barbara, if you would like to chat....send me a sparkmail!!

Motivation is such a big word. And it is so hard to unlearn old, bad habits. I have been fighting to stop thinking--if I lose 5 pounds, I can have a bag of Fritos, it's the Academy Awards, I need a treat, etc. Food was always the reward. But I just decided that my new reward for losing a few pounds will be that I am going to add a scale on my messages and come out of the closet at last about how much I actually weigh! Sounds odd, but I can't wait to do it.

I love being on this site too. There are soooo many nice people and we all share the same goal. I joined Curves last month and this coming Saturday I'll get re-measured and weighed and I can't wait. I think I lost several pounds, but only the scale will say for sure. At least my jeans feel a little better. So anytime anyone wants to just chat or blog, come to this site. For me, I'm on a few message boards and love each one. Good luck on your journies!

Welcome new folks and hello to the "experienced" folks (I would never call us OLD folks!!)
It's great to talk to other '48ers since we share a lot of the same expreiences.
I love this site too. I can't believe that I have been "dieting" most of my life and finally found a place to share the triumphs, trials, and tribulations. (What exactly is a tribulation anyway?)
Sopmetimes, I just get on here and ramble while I'm trying to get up the motivation to do another exercise - and now, reading your posts - I can do it! CRUNCHES - here I come!
Have a good week all!

Besides being able to track your food intake and your workouts, there are fantastic articles and recipes and most importantly there are some pretty amazing people to cheer you on, listen to vent when needed and offer some great advice!
If you would like to chat sometime....send me a sparkmail. You can visit my Spark Page and go from there.

Another 1948-er here--my birthday is December 8. Like you I am not yet a grandmother, although my daughter is getting close to being ready for kids. My son is just 21 and about to graduate from college so it will be a while for him.
I just started this program this week and starting slowly on the exercise plan. I've always found exercise so boring, I don't stick with it, but this is the first time I've ever tried changing the routine and I hope it helps.
This is a big year of changes for me and I hope that finally losing weight and getting in better condition will be a positive change. My husband passed away in 2/06 after several years of increasingly bad health. My kids are out of the house, so for the first time in over 30 years, my primary responsibility is to take care of me, and it feels weird! Along with high blood pressure, my doctor put me on meds for diabetes and I am hoping that losing weight will help alleviate both of those.

I visited Vancouver many years ago with my husband and it was just beautiful there.

Greetings Everyone! emoticon

A newbie here, and I'm a '48er as well; April 19th.

I am so new to Sparks that the ink isn't dry on my personal info sheet yet ... oh, wait, it's virtual. Oh well ... y'all remember fountain pens? My most favorite writing implement in school. Ballpoints were so new and SOOOO terrible.

Over the years I have done weigh watchers (twice) and a gaggle of other gimick diets. Frankly, the only thing (in the past) that ever worked for me was an early version of Atkins, but I found it so difficult to live with that I couldn't keep it up. So over time, I gained back everything I had lost (about 25#) and tacked on a few more for good measure.

More recently, I joined Curves (November, 2005) and then boosted my willpower management via a regimen of hypnotism over several months. Both helped and are continuing to help.

Well, that's enough for one post ... no?

my callsign is "loves trains" but most folks simply call me D. emoticon

Hi everyone. I was born in 1948,too - June 5, only I'm a real late-bloomer...I have 2 sons, ages 16 & 20. I'm hoping that the grandma years are still a ways away for me! i live on Vancouver Island - furthest west you can go in Canada. I spent a month in Greece in my early 20's - part of my year backpacing around Europe. What a wonderful memory! Such a beautiful country! I dream of going back some day. I've recently been diagnosed as having prediabetes and lost 7 lbs in the first 3 weeks on the program, but have also had the flu' & am finding my energy level really low, so haven't done a lot of exercising. My hubbie & I are planning a walk tomorrow morning. Hope that will inspire me to get a move on! I find that once I stop exercising for a while, it's very difficult to start again. I'm finding reading your messages to be very inspiring. Keep up the good work!

Goodmorning from Sunny Greece! I just came back from my swim at the lake. The water temperature was 22C. and I swam for 1 hour non-stop! I feel totally rejuvenated...well, maybe not totally, but surely a whole lot better. I always find, that after I have not exercised for a week, I just have to force myself to go. I wanted to stay in my house today and work on the computer or paint my latest painting that I am doing with egg tempera...but, I just told myself that this was my 'duty.'...my job...part of my life...like taking my vitamins everyday. I went, jumped into the water...brrrrrrr! It was cold at first, but after a few metres of the fast crawl, I was streaming through the warm tepid water just as the most beautiful turquoise green Greek Kingfisher skimmed the water above my head. This little bird is magnificent, and everytime I visit the lake, I look for his shining blue-green feathers to brighten my day. Life is a gift that we must be thankful for.
I was born and raised in Lansing, Michigan, graduated from Michigan State University twice and have been teaching since 1978. My real love is travelling and making art! I love to paint and make jewellery. I also love working on my web-site at www.virtualtourist.com Here is the link to my pages there, where you can see what I do and some places I have been to...http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/74ef1/
I am currently organizing a huge VT meeting in Santorini. You can also join the VT site for free. Maybe you can loose weight by travelling:):)Move, move, move...go, go, go...
So, now I must go and get ready for my lessons which I have from 3pm-8pm every Mon.Wed.and Fri.
Have a great weekend everyone and please enjoy your life, no matter what your weight. The Greeks have a very funny idiomatic expression that literally translates into English as 'my fats, my charms,' (ta paxh mou, ta kallh mou)Which means a fat woman is more attractive than a thin one. Keep up your diet for health reasons, not for vanity. Don't get so thin that you get sick. Well, for me this has never been an option. I have the greek blood and the weight doesn't leave easily. At least I try to keep fit by exercising. So, with that, I will say bye, bye for now:):)

I just turned 59 and it's not so bad. I made a promise to myself then that I would eat better and exercise. I joined Curves and love it. Wish I could go every day! The place is small and cozy and the people are friendly and helpful. Since joining last month, I've noticed some improvement already. My jeans feel a little bigger and even DH says I look like a lost a few. So don't let the gym intimidate you. After all, you're doing it for yourself and don't worry about anyone else. Remember, 59 is only a number! emoticon

Hi everyone!
I just realized that although I started this topic, I never stated my birth date. I was born on March 1st, 1948. Soon to be 59.
Spark is the only "group" for weight loss I've ever joined so I know nothing about the other groups many people talk about. Mostly in the past, when I would get the urge to lose weight, I just starved or even fasted and then ballooned up again. (I never said that I was the brightest bulb in the box.)

Seems to me that groups are a good thing - In the flesh encouragement and motivation - I just have a hard time visualizing myself grunting and sweating at a gym filled with "beautiful people". Wrong image??

Hi! I was born in 1948. My birthday is Jan. 20th. I guess I'm actually writing to Pam. I, too, have 2 grandchildren. However, I live in NY and they live in Calif and I miss them alot. I'd like to lose about 30-35 lbs., but it's SOOOOO HARD! I started the Zone Diet about a month ago and joined Curves. This site is great since you meet so many nice people and get a lot of good tips. Hats off to the creators!

Thanks! I will definitely put Greece on my list of places to go. I just took a peek at your SparkPage. Love the cat....too cute! I had one that was a bit overweight too! The vet kept on me to give her less food but if her dish was empty she would literally stand there and SCREAM!!!! UGH...she was a piece of work. Unfortunately she only lived for 4 years...her kidney's were only 1/4 of the size they should have been and we had no idea until she was in kidney failure that she had a problem. Miss her a lot!
Your job sounds interesting and you are a very special person to tackle one like that!!
Make it a great day ~~

I spent a year in Greece. Was burnt out at my job so needed a break and always dreamed of going. Took out my retirement fund, bought a moped, a tent, and a ticket on a freighter headed for greece. It was FABULOUS! The people, especially the country folks were wonderful! I think I shocked them - a single American woman touring Greece alone on a moped, but I was taken into many homes and became a temporary part of their families - even with my 50 words of Greek! What a beautiful place - you are so luck to live there. You should go Pam...it rejuvinated me.

Hi
Have never been to Greece but it has always intrigued me!! My mother swears that I was Greek in a past life ~~ LOL!!
I enjoyed reading your post.
What part of MI are you from? I too was born there, in Detroit, and lived in Royal Oak just before moving to CA in 1965. Have been in CA ever since.
Take care and make it a great day!

Good morning from Athens, Greece!
I was born in Michigan on August 25, 1948, and lived there until 1979. Then I moved to Athens! It was a huge change to live in Greece back then, but now it is so much like that States, that I sometimes think of moving again to a less 'noisy' place again! One good thing about living in Greece, is that I have access to fresh chemical free grown vegetables all year round. The bad thing, is that there are also any kind of fresh 'pasta' which is what we call 'little cakes' and sweets! Fortunately this is not my passion, but I do love the traditional Greek 'Mousaka.' Generally, I could eat spagetti everyday of the week.
I have been on Sparkpeople since last summer and have been active on the site since September. Since then I have lost 11 kilos but my scales have been stuck since January like a bear in hybernation! Winter is so difficult to stay on a diet.
Luckily, I have a natural hot-spring lake 4 blocks from my house and I try to swim 2-3 times a week. It is the only exercise that doesn't make my bones ache and I love swimming there. I think it's the most beautiful swimming pool in the world!
I don't feel 58+ I think I am still 29! How about the rest of you?
Sparkpeople is a fantastic site! You can find all the help you need, meet like-minded friends, and stay motivated without feeling guilty because you have a temporary set-back.
Good luck everyone and thank you for sharing your personal experiences.
Filakia,
IOanna

Hello !
My name is Pam and my birthdate is 1-31-1948. Wheph! Can't believe that this is our last year of the "50's"....YIKES!!!! I don't feel that old!! LOL
Anway, I live in CA (born and raised in MI) I have 2 grown children and 2 grandkids (the lights of my life). I need to lose about 100#'s. I joined the Biggest Loser Club on-line last October and through a challenge group ended up over here on SparkPeople (about 2 weeks ago). I still like the whole principal of BLC but this site offers so much more info and it's free!!! Yippee!!!
I wish everyone a beautiful day and a great weekend!

Hi Loupy, welcome to the topic.
I love the southwest too - I live in NM, and it's really the place I feel most comfortable. The Climate, the architecture, the pace...it just works for me.
I've been a member since last July and have made progress, although it has been neither steady nor spectacular. Compared to other programs I've tried though, this one is great - at least I haven't quit in discust!
Good news about the puppy! As you get more fit, she will need more exercise...so you'll do it together! The problem with chaseing kids is that it happens in firs and starts, not sustained activity...now if you could chase them around the block ???
I'm writing from a hotel room and am about to get off the computer (and get off my butt) and try to do some of my strength necercises with a rubber cord. Ugh! but I AM DETERMINED!!
All you 48ers have a good week!

I was born 3/27/48. 59 in a few weeks. No, we are not retired yet but we are living in an RV in Arizona. I love it here. Just moved down here a little over a year ago. I've been with Sparkpeople for a year or so. Someone on another message board recommended Sparkpeople to me and I have been here ever since. I love all the resources and that it is free.
I'm not doing so well this time. I have the tools and the knowledge, I just have to put it together again.
We got a new puppy on Friday, so my walks are trying to train her on a leash and getting her housebroken. I am up and down all the time with her. I also chase 3 grandchildren around. But the weight is still NOT coming off. I will get better at this, I'm sure. Hope there are other 48ers out there.
Make is a healthy week.
Blessings and hugs,
Loupyemoticon

So, hello 48ers, and friends.
Getting close to retirement? Or already retired?
How long have you been connected with SparkPeople?
What brought you here?
How ya doin'?

I searched all the "Getting Fit Over 50" boards - all 60 pages of them - and couldn't find 1948, so decided to start one for those of us who are power walking toward....a healthy retirement?....running with grand children?...whatever.
I like this whole "Over 50" forum because 1. you folke know how much harder it is to lose that belly now than it was at age 25...a little sympathy please...
It's also nice to talk to others who remember black and white TV with a channel dial that you had to turn...when transistor radios were a MAJOR DEAL...when girls were not permitted to wear pants to school (only skirts and they had to be knee length or you got sent home).

Anyway...come-on 48ers. This is a good place for remembering, looking forward, commiserating, and encouraging. Is anyone out there?
