Have you ever used an exercise ergometer, "walking" with the hands? There is one at the gym, which I used after getting completely deconditioned from a major accident. It started the "aerobicizing" process to get my heart and lungs functioning again.
Another early practice after the accident was to walk in the supermarket. I would go up and down one aisle and then the next. The supermarket has chairs where people sit and eat snack food, so there was always a chair close by. It helped that the lighting was good, and that the aisles were wide and flat. I could also use the shopping cart for support if I needed it, without making my condition too socially obvious.
A third early practice was water exercise in a warm pool. There was a class run by a PT trained in reconditioning practice.
