I turned 75 on Jan 1 of this year. I still want to eat good and feel good. I am a type 2 diabetic so losing weight is important to me. So far I have lost about 30 pounds
with another 10 to go. These are the hardest ones to get off for me.

Went to the gym this morning and participated in the Silver Sneaker" program. It is one hour (60 minutes) of moving with either weights, resistance bands or a ball. It gets you moving. And I am over 75.

Going again tomorrow morning too.

It might be a good thing to get a quad cane or a walker for better balance!

Hello everyone...
Hope all of you are doing well. Just wanted to get some feedback on walking aids for my husband. I use a quad can for support and balance. My husband needs one now as we are going on a long journey. I recommended a quad cane for him too, but he says a regular walking stick would be just fine. He is 85, has mild arthritis and a little balance issues....suggestions anyone?

Chrishacat, so sorry to hear of your loss. It's good that you do have family and friends to help. It sounds like you and your husband went through a long ordeal. Do you have family in the same town? My husband had a stroke and then some life threatening seizures in 2011. We were living in Florida, but my family was in St Louis. We went through it alone, and it was terrifying. My epileptic greyhound died shortly after my husband's stroke. Those were tough times, but we got through them.

I guess they say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. By now I'm very strong, but tired.

God bless you and will be thinking of you during the holidays.

Very sorry for your loss. It is hard to get used to living alone. I am glad you have lots of family and friends to fall back on. I lost my husband 25 years ago to bladder cancer. It is never easy. (((HUGS)))

Hi, I am 71 and recently widowed. Lost my precious husband to brain cancer December 5th...almost three weeks ago. Struggle was year long. Prior to that I was caregiver to my mother. First time I have ever lived alone. Have lots of caring family and friends.

I'm 63, but my husband is 70. We celebrate our birthdays in November. I have always had a hard time to remember that I am not 70...I've sort of been in the wrong decade...but people tell him that he looks younger than his age so I guess that I have helped him stay young. LOL

Now that's a good attitude, wanting to make the 80's group. I'll be happy to get through the 70's. My inspiration is my husband, who is 15 years younger than I am. I need to keep that youthful attitude. He had a stroke almost 5 years ago, so now I really need to keep up my health to help with him. He wasn't paralyzed or anything. No one would know he had one, other than some of the cognitive damage.

I am 74 and joined Spark people on Monday.I have 40 pounds to lose and my doctor advised me to count calories. He said if I am aware of what I am eating I should lose the weight. I am an emotional eater and a widow. I find comfort in food. I truly want to lose the weight so I feel better (knees hurt from extra weight) and I want to look fantastic and fit into my clothes without having bumps and bulges showing. I need motivation. I start diets but then I fail. I am starting to exercise.

Hi,

I'm over 70 and have been a lifetime WW member for 25 years! I'm struggling with being 4 -6 pounds over goal and have been paying for my monthly meeting at least half the time. I decided to start tracking again - with Sparkpeople - to regain motivation. it's worked in the past, so join me and give me some support. I'm an active over 70 - dance several nights a week, play tennis and do pilates and a bone strengthening class but these 4 -6 pounds really are a struggle.

Thanks for listening.

I'm almost 70, well, almost 69, but close enough. I'm fairly new to this site, and like it very much. I've been recording my food, having to restrict what I eat as I get older. I signed up with a personal trainer and have an hour-long workout twice a week and go myself to the health club once a week following his plan. I haven't lost that much weight, but I will. I am committed to it, mostly for health reasons and to feel better. I do check in here every day, and I find great support from all of you. Thanks.

Sharon yes indeed blessed with caring children, actually my trainer is my youngest grandson's friend. But yes all our kids do go all out to care for us. The fact that most of us, that is the families of our 4 sons live in the same apartment building also helps.

Nas in our part of the world, Dhaka or Lucknow, they will be scandalised if seniors like you and me using a cane to walk even attempt getting into the pool. In fact I did get both my daughters to learn swimming but neither of them get into the pool, unless they are vacationing at a resort. In fact my older one says she is very shy to do it in front of her daughters-in-law and sons-in-law. LOL...guess ours is an extremely conservative society

Maryjoanna I'm 80...nice getting to know you.

Casey we really don't have too many options for weight loss for seniors here in Lucknow. Absolutely no possibility of a grandma like me getting into a pool. In fact even at the gym, there aren't any seniors. The oldest might be a few in their fifties.
My grandson is friends with the trainer at the gym so he comes home to train me 3 times a week

Good job on no cake. I am not sure I could have been so strong. Sweets are my weakness.

That's great that you resisted eating dessert. I know, for me, that is a big problem. You might want to join some place that has a pool since water is very good for arthritis. I've had 2 knee replacements and the water is great. I go to the Y and all the people in my class are over 60. Don't even mind getting in a swimsuit. Some of these people can barely walk, but they get in the water.

So how has working out been coming along friends. I believe with my limitations - arthritis in my knees and hips, diet control is a better option to lose weight but not denying the importance of "KEEP MOVING".
Yesterday was mom's 97th, while everyone binged on food, I was careful I had one piece of grilled chicken and some yellow rice. No desserts for me or even the birthday cake. Just had a couple of pieces of Kiwi as dessert.

Welcome to the group Sharon K. I think you will like it here. I haven't been tracking lately and know that I need to get back to it. It really helps. It does get easier when you build up you list of favorites. Chair yoga sound interesting. I will have to check it out.

Yes Sharon, I have a tough time tracking food as well. Need to match with the Indian equivalents. When I am cooking I take care but when my children send us the meals becomes rather challenging.
Good luck with your knees... I am sailing in the same boat, I weigh around 215 lbs, but my knees and hips give me big trouble. Use a cane to walk and on bad days need additional support to get in and out of the car too or just stand up after sitting for a while.
Well I really don't volunteer taking care of kids any more - only great-grands, I only watch over the helpers taking care of the tots.

Hi Sharon K.
Hope your knee will back to working well soon. I went to a Tae Chi class this evening, and I am home now, nursing a sore left knee. The class was not the start of the soreness, I guess it just aggravated it.

Thank you for comments. It helps when people discuss what they have done to lose weight. Yes I track my food diligently, get different activity daily, not so great on the water. Its hard to enter food on Spark, it bounces out again. Not a tecchy but will try again. GoodLuck Sharon K!

Hi All, I am 0ver 70 and really feeling it as I am at 257.5 pounds today. My left knee is not working as it has in the past. I'm trying to go easy with walking. Haven't been out to walk yet as I am designated driver to taxi grandchildren to work and home from school and to work. I enjoy their company for the most part.
I struggled entering my food for today -- I'm sure it will seem easier once I get use to doing it. Thank you all for being here. Have a good day.

Sharon K.

you have to eat enough eating too little will make the metabolism go into starvation mode

It is not unusual to stall. Maybe try to change up your exercise routine and make sure you are getting the calories you need or we go into starvation mode. It will pass but it can be very discouraging.

I have stalled at times. The key is not giving up. Usually introducing something of more intensity will get you back on track if regular consistency does not do it. Do you track your steps? Monitor your calories?

Breakfast is so important. I always start my day with several cups of water, a blueberry baked oatmeal bar, and two pieces of fruit. 386 calories +/-. I usually take a walk before breakfast.

Each day gives us a fresh start.

You can do it!

One day at a time.

Hi All, totally new here. Over 70 too and I would love to lose weight. I am at a plateau and not budging. What causes that? It doesn't sound like that is anyone else's complaint.
