Hello Women! At least I think it's all women on this board?! I'm 72 and determined to take off 65 pounds...again. I did it 6yrs ago...sigh. And then let it come right back. I know that I need to change how much and what I eat. I know that my metabolism loves to save fat...do you think it's my Nordic genes?! I am tracking meals and paying close attention to daily nutrition reports. I focus on whole, fresh foods. And no dessert save an occasional teeny tiny piece of dark chocolate. I've lost 14 lbs in just under 3 months. I pedal a stationary recumbent bike, have access to many walkable routes when it's not winter in the tundra, and have started strength training. Looking forward to checking in here regularly and seeing what all of you are up to:)

Yesterday was 61 degrees with sunshine, no wind and just all around nice. I will be happy with this kind of weather for as long as we have it. I did walk for 28 minutes. I hope to do some weights today. I have a Spark video for upper body hand weights I will do. Hope you all have a good day.

I also got in my steps yesterday, it was a beautiful day to walk the neighborhood. I agree, need to start weights again, I am losing muscle.

MaryGold, I am going to start my hand weights again in the very near future. I would like to start them this week or next week for sure. I walked 28 minutes again yesterday and did get one of my plants replanted after having to root it after it broke off. Went out for dinner with my daughter Barb and sure enjoyed the time with her. I will be 72 in June. Sometimes I really don't feel that old at all. I want to stay healthy and strong so I can enjoy my golden year instead of having to rely on someone else.
I have started using weights because I have lost a lot of muscle.

Carol, Hailley is 10 years old and really in pretty good shape for her age. Heart and lungs are good, eyes are good and hearing is good. She does have a little problem with her leg but doesn't seem too bad. It is mainly her allergies that are getting her.
Kiwi, I did WW for a while and then when I joined Spark I found that I really had just about everything I wanted right here. I have gradually lost 57 pounds and I am feeling pretty good.
JH, that is a great story about your leader. It is people like that who can make a difference.
Yesterday I walked 28 minutes and dusted and polished my furniture in my bedroom. I also vacuumed the carpet in the bedroom and in the front porch. Hope you guys all have a good day and good to see the new people posting.

Thanks, Kiwi. Glad you found a tracking method that suits your means and goals!!!

I was once in WW and did well. It is an excellent program for many people. Our WW leader was excellent and very funny--funnier than most TV comedy. She introduced herself as having been from a large family that gathered several times a week for donuts. (Of course, being from Green Bay, you must know that the donuts were frosted and decorated in a bright kelly green.)

Her family were great Packers fans and once they heard over the radio that the packers were having trouble due to the offensive line being too fat. They read off the names of the players along with the weights and she realized that none of them weighed as much as she did. That brought her to ww, where she finally met her goals and became our leader.

Yes Julie, I'm in the senior age group (71). Have been a SP member for years but never did much with it. However I've just restarted WeightWatchers a few days ago, and sought out this forum for encouragement. I'm not paying this time. I'm using info gleaned from past times I've been a member, and I'm using a free app on my Android tablet, which is great for tracking my daily food intake and points. (You need to know the points of the foods you add, but once you've added the food once it's there for easy access the next time.) It's called WWDiary and I love it.

I have a LOT to lose but feel like I can stick to it. Just need to make sure my fridge is always full of vegetables and fruit! (I only have 1-2 pieces of fruit per day though.)

I really feel resolved to stick with this long term.

If I quit now, pretty soon I'll be back where I started. And when I started I'd have given anything to be where I am right now...

Carol, so glad to hear your mom is doing so well. I am sure she is excited about going home. Julie, your goals will continue to change as you progress. It is good to have goals to strive for.
Yesterday I walked for 25 minutes. I was able to get groceries and go to the vet with Hailley. She cost me $777.00. She has ear infection, her skin is infected again from allergies and she got her shots and I got her heart worm medicine and the flea and tick medicine. The flea and tick medicine is what really costs alot. I might not get it next year. I had a really bad night and this morning was terrible. I was finally able to cough up a large plug and that made me breathe good again. I did walk for 25 minutes but it takes a lot out of me to get those plugs up so took it kind of easy the rest of the day. I really feel good now. Hope you all have a good day.

Sharon--glad your getting out and are more hopeful of healing

Carol--great news about your mom--I'll bet the motivation of getting home helped speed along her progress

I am quite new to this over 70 group and have been following conversations for a few days before jumping in. Although I am 76, I didn't join this group because of my age (which seems to be in the sixties mentally) but because I am dealing with some health problems that might make this age group a helpful place to be.

After being a Spark Person since Feb. 12, I determined that I had to develop goals that worked specifically for me and started that process yesterday, firming up my commitment by writing it in a blog. Soon I will start developing other goals and hopefully achieve them and become a thinner and a lot more healthy

Today: visiting mom, she is doing so much better, and surprise might only need to be in respite care for 2 more weeks and then go back home. Didn't think this would happen when all of this mess started.

Carol, I live in Minnesota. I have been out to the doctor and ER and things like that but not shopping or out to dinner. I take Hailley out to potty 4 to 5 times a day so plenty of fresh air. I have felt much better since they found out what was going on with the candida. They feel l like I had this for quite a while so that is why it has been hard for me to go. Hope you all have a good day.

Morning ladies - Welcome back Nas, glad your surgeries went well. Sharon, I was surprised that you haven't been out of the house all winter, where do you live?

My mom is doing much better and yesterday she was her "old" self....LOL and at 98, I am not kidding.

Today, my financial advisor is having a lunch and talk about our economy, he had to spread it out the entire week to get in as many as he could. Have my questions ready and off I go to learn.

Good day yesterday. Did two more loads of laundry and walked 25 minutes. I got the garbage ready for pick up today and Barb put it out. We went to Wal Mart last night and out for dinner. I can't believe I made it out. That is the first time since winter started and it sure felt good. It was a sunny day but cold. The wind was cold. Barb and I had a really nice time and good chat. She will be levaing in a week for 14 days in Cancun, Mexico. Kevin and her go every year now and have for a very long time. It will seem so strange not to have Jasmine or Winter this year. I sure do miss those dogs. Well, off to get a start on my day. I can't remember the last time I went to a movie. I don't think I could sit that long anymore. Hope you all have a good day.

She does want to go home but we told her that for the next 30 days it isn't possible. No it sure isn't cheap or even affordable for many, lucky she does have financial resources.

Thanks to all who responded and gave suggestions. This helped more than you know. For now, I think the path for me is to plan out 3 sets of goals--activity goals, exercise goals, and for those days when I am really limited, restorative goals.

I know what you mean about being limited in what you can do. I some days feel that my daily activies has to be my exercise because it is all I can do. I count it. I do try to walk most days but some I just don't have the energy to do it. Hope you all have a good day.

welcome JH - I have been on Sparks since 2009, the more you join teams the more it helps you, hope you have also set up your spark homepage.

Exercise is the issue with me because what I loved to do ( dancing exercise classes), I can't anymore and that burned up the calories. Now I walk and do strength training 2 times/week. I can understand your frustration but what sparks start to have you realize is that exercise is different than activity. You can try another tracker on line to see if there is a difference in burning those extra calories.

I am over 70 and glad to have found spark. I joined spark people about 6 weeks ago but this is my first day to use Spark Coach, as I wanted to learn to navigate the spark people site reasonably well before tackling anything else. Anyhow, this is the first SparkCoach message board I have entered.

I find the food tracking program very helpful. The fitness tracker is not very helpful for me. The types and amount of physical activity I can do are limited in some ways by a medical condition and these limits change from time to time--sometimes from day to day--depending on my physical condition.

Most days my physical activity is used up cleaning or working in my garden. It seems strange that 20 minutes of digging burns 0 calories whereas 10 minutes on the stationary bike burns 69 calories. Have the bikers never dug through clay to plant a tree? On one of my better days I spent a very long time gardening and the tracker informed me that I burned hundreds of calories but there was no way to eat that many additional calories unless I ate very unhealthy foods.

Do any of you have these issues? How have you dealt with them?

I guess I lost the group for awhile. I am doing good now that they finally found out what was wrong and got me on some medicine. It was very scary not being able to eat and it was becoming difficult to even swallow. It is sunny out here today and we are starting a slow warm up. I will enjoy the nice weather. We are going cold and blustery again for the next week. Have been unable to do anything for the last week and sure hope I can get my problem resolved pretty soon. Technology day for me. I've charged up the Kindle Fire I purchased to use with out local Library. I was able to connect it and work through the intro...then took it to the Library to have someone help me use it there. A lovely, PATIENT, young woman took me through the steps.

Hi he's I am 74 going to be 75 in June.
I am been very active and fit most of my life but was hit with a biggie 2 months ago. I had shortness of breath and I considered it not normal for me. Went to a cardiologist and after a catherization was told I had my major artery 100% blocked and another 80% blocked and needed double bi pass open heart surgery

I am still in shock but it's genetics in my family.

I need to loose some weight! I am now 207 and would like to get to 165. Hard when I can't work out as hard as I used to do I will have to cut calories. Help

Patti, the sweater is lovely. I like the color. It was warmer yesterday but with the wind it really felt cool. I guess it is March after all. Hope you all have a good day.

Here's my new sweater. It has golden bells around the neckline. I made one from the same pattern with wooden beads many years ago. It was my favorite sweater, but when I lost my weight, it was JUST TOO BIG.

I'm glad to have a replacement. It's just as comfortable as the last one!

Today was Tax Day for me. A friend of mine had gone to the AARP free tax help last year and took me with her. I've done my own with the computer aids the last four or five years, but I thought it would be best to have someone help me this year. They were excellent! They knew what to do and it's already submitted. I get a big refund, thanks to my husband's deductions.

Good thing I went to Personal Training early this morning.

Carol, it is so good of you to spend your time with your stepmom. I am sure she will love the walk and just getting outside.
Patti, very good news that you don't need blood pressure medicine.
I walked for 30 minutes again yesterday and did two loads of laundry. It was sunny and 32 so it is a slow warm up again. Hope you guys have a good day.

Took my blood pressure machine and my data of all the BP readings I've taken in the last 2 months to the doctor today. She took one look and said,"These look good. You don't need blood pressure medicine."

Glad you had a good visit. Good thing the rain isn't too heavy. Those floods and and land slides are bad. Are river is just over its banks but nothing serious.

I'm working on lowering my blood pressure through food. My 20 Super Foods: Kale, Spinach, Blueberries, Pork, Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes, Beets, Oatmeal, Plain Yogurt, Kiwi, Bananas, Tilapia, Broccoli, Avocado, Quinoa, White Beans, Peaches, Nectarines, Red Bell Pepper, Melons.

Yesterday was cool and dreary. I didn't do a lot but I was up and moving as much as possible. I got little things done around here. Today will be pretty much a repeat of yesterday so won't be outside. Hope you all have a good day today.

Yesterday we got rain and some snow. It came down pretty good but the snow melted because it was above freezing so very little snow on the ground now. Hope you all have a great day.
