Yes, I m here. I just had a birthday 11/23 and I am now 73. I am struggling too. I have not been able to lose anymore weight. But my weight stays within 3 or 4 pounds. So I hear you.

I am almost 74, so definitely fit in this group. I have lost about 85 lbs over the last 12 or 14 months. It was easier than I thought it would be at this age. I have four Labrador Retrievers, who need walks every day, so the exercise part is mostly taken care of. Won't be able to do it in the winter, though, when we have a lot of snow. Guess I'll have to go to the gym.
Haven't been able to get motivated to do the stretching and weight training I should. Only physical excuse I have is bad knees.

Granny627-Glad to see I'm not the only "oldie here.I'm a Mass.girl too born and raised in Wakefield, but lived in Boston, worked there too.I have several challenges. I have been diabetic since 1980,had a stroke in Jan. 2013. I"ma retired widow of a career military pilot ( Coast Guard),so I have lived in San Diego, Alaska, and Cape Cod. I have done WW in all those places. My go to food when dieting has always been greens, since I have to watch carbs. Now I'm on blood thinners ( warfarin),and have ti limit grees, salad, and a bunch of other stuff you wouldn't even expect containe vitamin K.
I just don't know what to eat anymore. I also have to limit salt and fat.I need to loose about 100 lbs. To make matters worse,I have a painful knee that limits exercise. Because of the Warfarin, I am NOT a candidate for replacement. I'm trying to keep my sunny side up, but it's a challenge. Long, cold winters here in Maine do not help!

WEEZERMAC, I see you are on private. I will be 72 in Sept I am also a widow since Feb, 2013 and I also lost my 48 year old son in 07, It is so easy to become depressed and gain weight, that's why I came back to SP. I sold my home and now living in an apartment and I, for the first time in my life am living alone except for my little doggie, don't know how I would have made it without her.

U am 72,and had joined this site awhile ago, but never really go started. I have several problems. I and a stroke 1/12013, so I am on Coumadin for life. This means I must watch /limit foods with Vitamin K. There is a lot in Vit. K which has always been my go to food for weight loss. I also am a diabetic,so I have to watch carbs. Add to this a really bad knee which is hon operable due to the stroke. I am dazed and confused by the whole thing. I was doing WW online, but it's pricey, and I don't like the new program. I'm also trying to eat whole foods that don't have a lot "secret ingredients in them.
I have been widowed for 15 yrs. My oldest son passed about a yrs ago. That, coupled with a LONG,depressing winter in Maine, has made me unmotivated. Spring is finally here-ALMOSt,so I'm trying to get back on the band wagon.
I have been thru Oregon several times while driving to Sitka AK. It's a beautiful state. We were a career Coast Guard family,so Have seen a lot of this beautiful country.

Sounds like your body was in starvation mode with so few calories. You are wise to boost your metabolism by eating more calories, emoticon

Actually, I think my problem might be the opposite. Before starting this diet I always just ate one meal a day and didn't snack. I was never hungry at breakfast or lunch. So now I'm eating something at those meals (although it's hard for me). Anyway my calorie goal was 1200+ but my usual intake daily has been 700-900 calories and I did log everything. Since my original post about the plateau and after some reading, I started to eat more, not less getting my daily count a little higher. Also I did not exercise at all last week where I had been walking a mile 5 times a week mainly cuz I was depressed and just didn't feel like it.
Stepped on the scale yesterday (not my regular day but mid-week cuz I was curious, and I had lost a pound. Not a big deal but when you have been stuck on the same weight for awhile, any loss is a plus to me. Started back on my treadmill yesterday so anxious to see if the increased calories and walking will help with more loss.

Hi Mary, it really IS frustrating when you hit a plateau. I guess it's common but it is discouraging like you said! I've heard to stay consistent and to journal..don't know but do understand your frustration. You are doing well tho, hopeffully will get through it soon. I'm trying to get & keep the mindset. Back to exercising so hoping to keep motivation..good luck! Hello to all the 70's group...Dani

Hi, I'm 72, also a widow. I moved from Gladstone, MO to Eugene OR, about 18 mos. ago to be close to my grandchildren. I picked up about 15 pounds after the move. I enjoy water fitness exercising, gardening, reading and laughing. It took a while to get back to exercising after my move. I'm new to SP, I am looking forward to getting my weight under control with diet and exercise. ((hugs)) emoticon

I am 71, a widow for a year and it's hard reaching that age without gaining weight for one reason or another. Like all of you, I'm here to get accountability for losing these pounds. I now live in an apartment complex so I have plenty of room for walking but lately haven't been able to get outside because of ice. It looks like Spring is on it's way for NE Arkansas and I'm looking forward to walking, and my Angel (doggie) loves walking also.

Went in today for my annual physical check up . I am glad that's behind me.
Everything that the Dr. checked in the office is fine. She is encouraging me to take off the extra pounds I am carrying. Will do my blood work in a few days, hope there are no surprises.

I hate celery raw but if you put peanut butter in the "ditch", it is delicious. One of my favorite snacks. I scoop out a T of PB, then use a knife to get a little out of the T. Will do enough for about 3 6" sticks. Hope this helps. Also, my DH loves air-popped popcorn...it's really low. And if you want chocolate, at the grocery buy WW chocolate carmels or Atkins carmel nut candy bars. Each has just 100 calories and certainly satisfies that sweet, chocolate craving. Know all this as my DH is a compulsive snacker and he needs something after dinner. At least now he's having healthier, low cal snacks. :)

Lorejae,
Yeah I've yo-yo'd all my life but when I finally hit my all time high weight (including when pregnant), I decided it was time to do something about it. My DH was also at his high so he's on it with me. For years and years I only ate one meal a day, dinner with no snacking except for a handful of peanuts (my weakness). I was never hungry but know my body was in continuous starvation mode and I should eat breakfast anyway. That is the hardest thing for me....eating breakfast and lunch. I've only been over my lower number of calories twice and that is after Friday since we go out to eat every Friday. I have really simple things in the morning, instant oatmeal, a smoothie or a scrambled egg as it's still hard for me to eat breakfast, but know I need to to get my metabolism going.
What discourages me is that one week I'll lose 2 or 3 pounds and the next week, nothing. Sticking to my calories and no loss discourages me but I'm determined to stick with it and it helps that my DH is just as determined.
Where are you? I'm in Lexington, KY

Greetings to all:
Well we have a pretty good little group here 70+.
Where is everyone from? I'm in Lexington, KY...anyone nearby?

Pretty healthy here...have been all along altho last year had two falls 4 months apart and broke my left wrist (my dominant) both times and my ankle, first the right, then the left. This set me back a bunch and caused a lot of weight gain as I had to keep my foot elevated as much as possible (didn't have casts applied on any parts because of swelling.so the healing was longer. In all my years, never had a break anywhere, turn 70 and wham!!!! My bone density tests are fine, just bad luck but I'm now VERY careful with walking or going down stairs.

Elaine,
Thanks so much for responding. I'm like you, finally decided to try to get this weight off as I was the heaviest I've ever been. How do you get that little weight bar on the bottom of your message. Would like to put that in on mine as well.
Good luck and feel free to write anytime.

Hi Mary,
I am 72 and just recently joined on Feb. 8th - - my exercise is limited to walking (I walk around the house for 10 min. every hour) and doctor prescribed physical therapy exercises (1 hour daily). I had back surgery in Nov. 2013 and am getting better everyday. Was scared to have the surgery but I had complete faith in the neurosurgeon. I've lost 4 lbs. and hope to continue at 1 to 2 lbs. a week. Spending a lot of time on this website - tracking nutrition, etc. My 73rd birthday is in April. I too would like to say goodbye to 40 lbs. I realize now that I had steadily gained weight as the back pain from degenerative discs and severe stenosis over the years, made me compensate with the joy of cooking and eating. I had a problem with portion control of even healthy food. Now the measuring cups, scale, etc. are out on the counter and I am SERIOUS to follow a new lifestyle. Elaine (Ohio)

Hello there,
I'll be 72 tomorrow the 17th.
Started my new diet Jan 15th so it's a month. Have lost 10 lbs toward the 40 I hope to lose.
Been walking on my treadmill for 30 min 5 days a week.
Fortunately I am quite healthy so can do so.
Would be happy to hear from anyone here.
Mary

Good to see a fellow"Bostonian" I am going to be 72 in February. Now live in Biddeford Maine. I am widowed.I have a bad knee that needs replacement, but am on Coumadin so they are not eager to do one.As a last ditch effort,I have gone back to Physical Therapy to strengthen my knee. It's almost impossible to exercise. I a glad to have survived my stroke.Yeah,I sure wish I could do the things I used to do.

I know that I have any pointers but I sure can agree, it is difficult the older I get to loose. My body just doesn't react the way it did 30 years ago. If I have learned anything from SP is don't give up it is worth the effort. So I just keep on trying. Sometimes I go weeks without weight loss but I feel so much better and am seeing some health results too. The combination of exercise and healthy eating is worth it.

I am so glad to hear from someone in my age group who has almost reached their goal.
I do hope you shed those last few pounds soon. emoticon
Do you have any pointers? I am not really "junk food" eater, but I find it so difficult keep track of what I eat. I think a life time of eating whatever I wanted without any problems is proving difficult to break.
I do walk almost everyday or do exercises inside. I will just have to make up my mind and
"just do it". I know it can be done.

I am 73 and looking to loose that last 5-10 lbs. I am somewhat computer challenged so it has taken awhile to find you. Sometimes I feel like I am the only one in this age bracket because most exercise is geared for the younger ones. I am working on it though as I walk 30 min a day and want to take up cycling for pleasure. I live in Western Colorado and love the outdoors. My goal is to loose enough weight to hike comfortably in the mountains. My husband and I will celebrate our 50th anni. next year and that is part of my motivation.

Yes, there are lots of us still around....many of whom are widows. So easy to sit and snack at nite if one is alone....takes lots of willpower to snack on celery. Health is so important to us all and these extra pounds, tho all earned, are not good for us. I did well today until dinner and then I cheated.....I had a small piece of chocolate and loved it !!!!!

I am over 70 and then some. I am so tired of deciding do I count fats or sugar or calories or this and that;; for me, counting calories and having Spark tell me what areas I am overdoing or underdoing...this is the hardest challenge ever..this dreaded weight issues. Lots of good things in my life by on this weight!!!

I'm 74 and just getting back on SP after a while off. I do work out but I decided I need to keep track of things. It's too easy to slip up if I don't. emoticon
