I love making tee shirt quilts. I haven't done much sewing in the last two days, a bit of the stomach bug has got me down. Today I purchased my batting and cut batting for my shams. I got them all pinned and ready to sew, hopefully tomorrow. I also made contact with my quilter today and am doing the final touches to get the quilt ready for her. I use sheets for backing and I have to cut down a king sized sheet to fit a full sized quilt. Happy quilting everyone.

Going to start getting my oldest GD t-shirt quilt squares ready. I use a light wt. fusible on back and my press to make sure it really holds. This is about the only time I get press out. Used to use it on DH jeans and western shirts that had to be heavy starched but since retirement he just wears shorts and t-shirts most of time. I am going to prepare the next GD t-shirts as I get them so they will be ready in 4 years when she graduates. We have several machine quilters for hire in my area, but some of their work doesn't meet my standards . I sure wouldn't want to put a lot of work in a quilt and then have it not hold up. Be sure to check out the quality of their work first. Not what is in their showroom but what they have done for other people. So happy for you that are finishing up a quilt. It's a wonderful feeling.

I pieced together most of my shams, today I have to just add a border. Then I can start quilting. I'm going to do those on my own. By the time I pay for a pro quilter and all the materials I bought I'll have $200 dollars into it. I don't want that figure to increase. The $90 fee to the quilter is way worth it so I don't have to spend time working on the floor!

I'm like you KKKaren...I'm taking a quilt to the quilter and am really nervous about it...but it will be okay. the top was made using a machine and the person who made it was really perfectionistic about her work....so I think it will be okay.
Just a few inches left on the the last edge and it will be finished. Yea

I finished my quilt top today, ya! Now it's to the quilt store to get some batting then I'm taking it to a professional quilter. I've never tried one before and since this one is so big I'm turning it over to them. Then all that's left is binding. I learned a new method I'm going to use this time. While I'm waiting for it to be returned I'm making pillow shams to match.

Thanks for the info. Dual duty is what I have used in general but it will not work for machine quilting on my machine. It produces way too much lint very fast.. Or I might add, that's the only brand sold at Wall Mart and we have no other choice in my area. It may be that they get older, cheaper thread under the same label like they do at the dollar stores. Thread I have purchased when going out of town or on line seems to work much better even if it is higher. We are having a beautiful day today with a slight chance of rain which we need badly.

I love to sew, embroider and weave. I prefer smaller quitling projects such as wallhangings, table runners, purses, pillows etc..I get bored with the larger projects. I do mainly machine quilting. From SE Pennsylvania

I probably get a new brand thread everytime. I just bought some at Joann's called Dual Duty XP - all purpose. It seems to be working fine so far. I find when I start having those breaks in the thread it tends to be the tension. You might want to check that out. I finished one side of my my full sized quilt today, will finish the last side tomorrow then it's off to the quilter. I can't wait to get this one done. Working with 2.5 inch squares has been a challenge.

Finished t-shirt quilt! Yea! I will finish a jacket and skirt for me then onto a new quilt. If anyone else machine quilts...what brand of thread do you use? I had trouble with breakage and it would sure go faster if I didn't have to stop and rethread so often. I had a good Mothers day and we are having a beautiful day today so I can plant the flowers my DD gave me. Enough leftovers that I wont"t have to cook for a couple of days

I took the morning off sewing today to get to some chores and access where I'm at on the quilt. I have all the horizontal sashing on and will try to get on the vertical this afternoon. It might be a wash on sewing all together today, I'm taking my Mom out for an early dinner this afternoon.

T-shirt quilt is quilted and off the rollers. I will get the binding ready in just a bit. Had problems with thread breaking at first but changed thread and needle and then I was ok. I start binding on by machine but turn it and finish it by hand. Weight was good today and it rained yesterday. A lot to be thankful for.

I've been cutting all day long, I have a few more pieces to do and I have 580 2.5 inch pieces. Then I can get back to sewing. The rotary cutter has been great but my arms and hands are tired from holding the ruler down so hard and pressing the cutter hard. Who said sewing wasn't exercise!

Had to stop and alter a college cheer suit. Now back to what I want to do. Nope! I stopped and cleaned out one of my sewing closets. Took several pieces of fabric that I don't care for and put in goodwill sack. Someone else might find a use for them. They were not quilting fabrics. Now that everything is clean I can start on quilt.

I found a fabric shop in a nearby town that has a contract with a uniform factory. the uniforms are made of 100% cotton and the shop owner gets the scraps by the pound and cuts them into various sized squares and packages them as units. I can whip up a 9 patch in no time using their sets. LOVE it. I plan to take the machine pieced quilt to the lady next Sat am to see if she would be interested in finishing it for me. And life goes on...

You're right sewsew, a little fabric was not enough, I go back tomorrow for a lot! Tater I'm just getting started and am already having trouble finding homes for my quilts. Sometimes it seems a little silly, buy a yard of fabric, cut it into tiny squares then sew it all back together again! I love doing it though. I spent the day cutting my stashing material and am tired from spending the day at my ironing board where I cut. Standing all day barefoot on tile floors. Tomorrow is a trip to the quilt store in the morning then home to cut my border which consists of 3 rows of 2.5 inch squares. I need to get a rotary cutter while I'm there!

Look at how busy everyone is!! Yea us. Welcome newbies.
I finally finished the quilting on Mother's quilt. Took it to the church so that I would have room to lay it out and got the edges turned and pinned so that I can stitch them down. I have 2 more layered and ready to quilt, but I'm tempted to take the better one to a machine quilter to get it done faster. Sister says she will agree...but I still hate to do it. I love hand quilting. However, we have inherited so many quilt tops that I'm beginning to feel that I will never get them all completed. I literally hooped 5 at a time and kept them going for a couple of years...I finished more than I can count...but I still have bundles left. I'm hooping the next one while I'm working on this edging. I can't help but wonder what I'm doing this for.... or who.My daughter is a minimalist and will not want the quilts and my siblings are all 10+ years older than me and have their share. Right now I travel with them and use them for props in a quilt show that compares the quilt to our lives in Christ. Time will make the decisions...for now I'll keep stitching.
Be blessed all...welcome to the thread...Keep Sparkin'!!

Keep Sparkin'!

Karen, yes, yes, yes to the rotary cutters and rulers. They are way faster and more accurate. But what I don't understand is the buying of a 'little more" fabric. I always seem to buy a LOT of fabric. I looked at a new sit down quilter at our home show this weekend. It might work for some but I'm afraid I would sit way too long. I would love to have a longarm but right now I will use my Mid arm on my Handi quilter frame and get my walking done as I quilt. Putting a t-shirt quilt on frame tomorrow afternoon, I am so ready to get back to quilting instead of prom stuff

Hello ladies, I'm new to this board. I just finished the quilt tops for two of my grandbabies and am working on the one for the third. My plan is to quilt all three of them when all the tops are done. I've completed several quilts, but haven't done much lately. Just getting back in the game.

I've spent 3 days on a sewing marathon! today I'll sew for about an hour and that will finish up all my blocks then I'll take a break for a couple of days. The quilt has grown in my mind from a throw for the sofa to a full sized bedcover. I need to decide which before I go on. Happy quilting everyone.

Spent Monday quilting with a group of ladies - a quilt ministry that one lady does at her house every Monday. Was a lot of fun and I always learn a lot when I go. Although there are a lot of demands on my time for the next couple of weeks my goal is to spend at least an hour in my sewing room each day to get in my "quilt therapy."

In answer to someone's question - I do use a rotary cutter and love it.

Happy stitching, everyone.

I don't use a rotary...have in the past and hated it...not worth my while with the quilts I make. But some people LOVE them and wouldn't cut any other way.
Hoop moved and got some more quilting done this am. Gotta get this thing done!

I'll ask one more time: do you use a rotary cutter, do you like it? Tatter glad you're getting another done, I'm just starting a new one.

I've been cutting 2.5 inch squares all day from scrapes I bought at the quilt store today. I should have bought a rotary cutter while I was there! Do you use one?

Tatters would love to see your program. Got to get more fruits and veggies into my body, gotta have a V8. Fingers are sore from beading GD prom dress. She made her dress but I'm doing the bead work as she has so little time left before next weekend. Every time I work on alterations of prom dresses, I think of all the young children that did the bead work. #1 it's usually not good work and #2 they get so little pay for doing it. Most all formal dresses are made overseas for a cheap price and sold in US for hugh prices. Like the cheap hand quilted bed covers that give real quilts a bad name. I'm going to our local quilt show in the morning. You won't find those quilts coming apart as soon as you get home with them!

I just did mine this morning, the blue tape works great. Now I'm working on the quilting. I do mine by machine, I'm not brave enough yet to try hand quilting. Some day!

KK - Thank you !! I also tape my backing to the kitchen floor so that it is taught and I can pin it. However I have used scotch tape, which doesn't always hold it. Painter's tape - what an Awesome Tip.

I finished my quilt for step daughters wedding. A million + stitches..... It looks great. Just what I wanted - You can't beat hand quilting - it gives it such a home made look with lots of love thrown in.
Now I am tying off the quilt for a baby, twin size...make a 'life quilt'.
Then on to my next quilt of many next quilts lined up.

It is what it is! Accept those things you cannot change, but change those that you can!

I finished my quilt top for GD's new quilt. It came out very nice. I have some other mending to do then I'll get back to the quilt. It's the hard part coming up, putting the back, batting and top together without having it slide around. One trick that has helped me: I have to work on the floor so I tape (with painters blue tape) the back to the floor. This way I can get it real taunt and it doesn't move while I put on my other layers.

I have tried a group but found that some of them didn't care very much about the quality of their work unless it was for them. I may be too picky, but I like for my work to hold up and to look good. I only have a few hooks to sew on altering all prom dresses and then all I have to do is supervise GD finishing her prom dress. Then I can get back to quilting. GD's softball team was to play West, TX. tomorrow. Our hearts go out to that town. We are planning fundraiser for them tonight at her last district game. They are already district champs as they have not lost a game and will head for play offs towards State.

Still working on Dresden Plate quilt for my granddaughter. Will practice FMQ today to see if I can get good enough to apply it to my wall hanging. I have too many projects going and not enough finishing. Anyone else like that? But I love fabric and am so enjoying getting into quilting. Happy stitching today.

I joined a blog/newsletter called the Curious Quilter. Twice a year they match donor and newbie and the donor sends a package of 100 precut quilt pieces of either 2" or 2.5" fabric. It is to make, or a starter to make, a "postage stamp" quilt. I got my first batch today from Sweden. I was matched with 2 donors so I have one more coming. The swedish fabrics are so nice, a little different then ours. I can't wait to make my postage stamp quilt.

I overbooked my women's retreats in April and just found out that I had 2 places mixed up. I also had omitted a site that I was prepared for ...but wouldn't have shown up.
I take quilts to these retreats and lay them out like a display and use them as 'props' as I talk about how we as individuals are brought together to form one body...the church...and how being pieced together we become stronger. It's really rewarding...but without an agent..this ol' brain just flips out sometimes....
Oh well....
ready to move the hoop.....so glad so many others are joining the talk. DD will teach me how to post pics someday...Looking forward to it!

I always use double fold binding on my quilts. I've seen so many that have to be rebinded in later years if they have been used. I try to make my quilts as sturdy as possible because I want them to be used and enjoyed. So happy that your quilts are coming along. Weight seems to be doing better since it is getting warmer( just plain old HOT yesterday)Hate to start running the air conditioners

I counted the moves I have left last night and there will be at least 3 more. I'm bringing the quilt in to work. We have a conference room with huge tables and I can lay it down flat to trim the edges. It has saw tooth on the sides and the last time I left it....the pull of using the quilt started wearing on the edge and I had repairs to do after awhile...so I prefer straight hems now. I'm folding the backing up over the top to make the binding and will do a double fold for strength. Giving it to sister for her birthday, but she's watched the whole process. I really think this might have been mom's last quilt top, but we just have so many. I have another one by the bed upstairs ready to hoop and get started on.
Happy binding!
